Great video
I loved The Substance. It really showed how much emphasis society puts on the aesthetic. When it's obvious the protagonist is wearing an ineffective paper mask, everybody continues like all is okay (just like people do for people with overdone plastic surgery). It really made me look at how insulting a compliment can be, and now as a father of daughters, I've become very conscious of how I voice my appreciation.
I am so glad that it made you have that reaction and I think every male that watches this film hopefully gets a behavior check in how we deal with women.
You both seem to share the same brain as me when it comes to movies. I would add that the studios chasing the popularity for the Stranger Things audience has imposed influence over films like Salem's Lot and Romulus. Audiences love when writers of Stranger Things nod to their influences (Stephen King films and Alien films) but this year it seems like their influences are nodding back. It fourth-walls me big-time. Also I implore you both to find and devour the recently released 4K HDR Black & White version of The Mist. Also check out Nosferatu in cinema while you can. Gothic perfection.
We saw Nosferatu last week and are keen to do a video on it asap. I have the 4k of The Mist and the B&W version is on my list to watch this year (it's a BIG list)
Finally, hesaves someone!
EXACTLY! and not just a cat!
Try an experiment. Watch the trailers for all the Superman movies or at least the first movies in every new remake so Superman the movie Superman returns Man of steel and Superman and accounting for improvements in how trailers are made which one feels like the best superman movie I say far and away the best is James gunns
I can remember seeing the first film at the cinema and the trailer for it vividly. I think it is my first memory. Not of people in my life but of Superman. I guess I'm a believer
No 28 months later , lol .
I know...do'h!
Superman is lying down like Yamcha in Dragonball which is cool
They use saturated colors rather than Zack Snyder's gray scale.
It harkens back to a richer palette which I was desperate to see in a new Superman movie
The fx are by the same team that just won an Oscar for GOTG3. They’ve been working on the fx for a year, and will continue to do so all the way up to the films’ release. It looks better than most fx movies that have released a teaser trailer by now. When it’s released it will look even better.
I completely agree although I was disappointed by the actual LOOK of GOG3. It looked like a TV movie. Very much like the Holiday Special. Which was great but looked cheap. I need a bit of film grain damnnit!
Superman films haven't been good since superman 2 but James gunn has not made a bad film and understands the source material unlike Snyder
He sure has the chops. I am hopeful
I thought all the effects and visuals were all amazing but thats just me 🤷♂️
Yeah, the people that are saying the visuals, VFX, and cinematography look bad must have watched a with their brain off, because James Gunn always finishes filming a year before the release so the VFX artists have time, and that's why all his comic book content has incredible CGI, and the cinematography in every one of his films is always incredible, and you can see it from this teaser with the beautiful shots, framing, and his flying and fighting scenes, the incredible camera work, etc., so yeah, those people that are criticizing it are definitely blind.
Well I DO wear glasses. Maybe it's because it looks digital and I am used to Superman being on film? I don't know, I must have my brain switched off.
Effects look dodgy? Are you kidding me? Krypto taking him to the Fortress obviously.
Opinions vary. I'm 100% sure they will look amazing on the big screen
If this is supposed to be a reaction video, maybe don't talk all the way through it.
Ummmmm we didn't and I thought reactions included verbal reactions too. I might have to get you to write down the rules of what a reaction video is so that we fit inside that box.
I like your reaction....👍👍from INDIA....
Thank You.
I really disliked Bill Paxton in Aliens and Predator 2 but it wasn’t his acting I disliked it was the characters that he played I think a lesser actor could have really messed up the movies. I think he went through a period of playing very arrogant characters and I don’t enjoy that but then as his career progressed he broadened his roles and really came into his own. I loved him in Twister and I think it’s my favourite of his movies and it is the role that I chose to remember him for I wish we had the chance to see how much more he had to give.
Have you seen Frailty? Stop what you are doing and hunt it down. It will blow you away
I’m a slave to the algorithm I know it doesn’t help much but I will keep doing it.😂 I hated this movie the first time I watched it to be honest I just felt like it was too many brilliant ideas thrown together just so they could work together and also to try to promote Loki. But I have watched it a couple of times now and it’s grown on me it’s not as good as the first two but it’s not as bad as age of Ultron.
I don't think that there really is a film in the Marvel bag that is as bad as Ultron. Thor 2 maybe in a pinch.
I don’t understand why you have so little views for this one but considering the movie maybe people are just unwilling to relive the experience of paying money to see it😅. I love how no matter how bad a movie is you still find positive things to say about it and don’t just tear it apart which is what I wish they did to the script. I don’t hate it if you ignore the original series and the ending but maybe Blarp would have written a better script😊. Keep up the great work it’s really appreciated.
Thank you! It's nice to get some positive feedback. We appreciate you. I still can't hate on this film as much as it wants me too
This film’s production was a complete mess from the beginning and it wasn’t just the studio that were causing problems Skeletors soldiers good as they looked became robots because Mattel didn’t want He-Man killing people and it cost a lot to make the changes. The studio halved the budget very early on and when the film finished production it had no ending which is why they used footage they already had to create the mess that we got the original concept was different. I love your work I only just discovered you so thank you but I do have a complaint about your comments about how the behaviour of the director changes your opinion of the movie. He is obviously not a good person and has done terrible things but it’s unfair to condemn the entire movie because of his behaviour. The other people who were involved in making it happen have done nothing wrong and you are condemning their work because of him. Although it’s not the same thing can you say that Hitchcock or Kubrick treated especially the female performers they worked with well but are you condemning them for unacceptable actions?
I struggle with being able to separate the art from the artist. What it boils down to that it unfortunately paints the film in a new light after the fact. I don't know if I'd be happier being blissfully unaware or glad that I know but it tarnishes the films. I guess this might not be the forum for exploring personal issues with this sort of thing. Sorry!
@ please never apologise for your feelings or expressing them I am very new to your channel and one of the things I love the most about it is your honesty and genuine reaction. If I have made you feel in any way that what you said was wrong then ignore me because you were right about how finding out after the fact can make you feel differently about things. You have made me realise that I do the same thing I like many people loved everything Harry Potter and now because of how J.K. Rowling has turned out feel angry whenever it’s mentioned. I think any channel that encourages honest discussion can never be wrong.
I agree with you. I don’t 28 weeks later was as good as days. I really love the grainy film style they did in the first movie and just think it’s leaps and bounds better than 28 weeks later. I will say though 28 weeks was a decent movie, it had one of the best opening sequences I’ve ever seen in a horror/zombie movie.
Agreed
I had forgotten the betrayal at the beginning of WEEKS and had the same gut punch feeling. What a triumph
Sweetheart, you got good genes
Watched Smile and Terrifier, they were overall good movies, where the bad guys won and were the main characters are struggling with mental issues
It's good to see a bit of realistic trauma creep into the fantastic and vise versa. It's been a very good year
I thought the second part would be much worse but I liked it more than the first one, there were a lot of good scary scenes but this scene with dancers chasing her was not scary cuz most of them didnt have that creepy smile i can do a better one and the thing that i love about this movie is the soundtrack as good as in smile 1 it gives spooky vibe and watching the movie on headphones was just perfect.
OOOOO. We must watch it next with headphones on. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. It's a rare sequel that can outshine the original.
Hitcher kicks ass 👍
It sure does.
I struggled to draw anything profound out of The Substance. I left the viewing feeling like I'd just watched an elaborately produced bikini commercial. The film doesn't say anything particularly interesting about desire, age or femininity. I really detest films which shove lots of flesh down your throat, and then pretend to have some grand pretext for debauching your imagination. 'The Substance' is a very close cousin of the 'X/Maxxxine' movies, which combine absolutely irrational scenarios with a script that has been lifted from an 'Archie' comic. The fact that some of this film's most ardent critics are intelligent young women, really says something too. If you look at Rodin's famous sculpture of the aging beauty, it says infinitely more about women and ageing, than this cheap sex-ploitation film.
A lot to unpack there and I'll be thinking about your comments when I watch it again
👍 You can hear the torture in the Werewolf's howl. 'Jaws', 'Alien', 'The Thing' and 'An American Werewolf in London' are the big four for me as a kid in the 80s. Terrified me. Have you listened to the audio drama retelling of this movie? ✌️🤟🤘
No I haven't! We must check this out. When Griffin Dunne showed up on Only Murders in the Building Season 4, I whooped. I have to agree with your top 4. I would have to cheat and have 5 and include The Shining
Would agree, this is a partial return to form for Shyamalan! Although i enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong, i loved the tension and suspense, the trailer is a bit smarter. Agree with your point that its reminiscent of De Palma! Josh Hartnett has good horror cache for this film and is perfect casting! Hayley Mills, whilst she is always fantastic, just seemed an unexpected choice!
Very unexpected but I didn't mind. I thought it was a lot better than Knock at the Cabin which I didn't hate either
Also, interesting you mention the misogyny that's often levelled at Hitchcock (i would agree with you both that this is unfair). An example of this is his penultimate film, Frenzy (also which i hope you can review) - none of the characters in that film are particularly likeable, but the female characters are often the strongest. I'm new to your channel and enjoyed this review, please keep up the great work! 😊❤
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Believe it or not, I still haven't seen Frenzy since I was a teen. That's was 35ish years ago. My mate has my boxset with it in and I might just have to rescue it soon. I think his writers gave women agency in their lives. That was rare in films back then. We will be reviewing Hitchcock films as soon as I get that boxset back.. Additionally, if you can watch Psycho on 4K it's a revelation.
@@shitcast2024brilliant, can't wait! I'm a bit of a Hitchcock fan and we're currently doing a retrospective on my own podcast. Incidentally, there's another great Australian show, Hitchpod, which I highly recommend 😊 I've been lucky to see Psycho in 4K on the big screen and would agree, it's a revelation! It's such a rich, multilayered film. I've got the Psycho blu ray set from Arrow that was recently released here in the UK, it was great to see 2, 3 and 4 in HD for the first time! Keep up the great work 😊
Psycho 2 is so underrated! The original film is such a classic and like the Bates mansion, looms large over horror cinema. Psycho 2 is one of those sequels that dares to stand up to it and succeeds! It actually took quite a lot for Perkins to return to the role, Psycho was such a shock to his image at the time that he bought himself out of his Paramount contract and sought work in Europe. We're glad he did eventually embrace Norman to made Psychos 3 and 4 (equally underrated) - please say you'll be reviewing these, too!
Eleesha has yet to watch 3 or 4. I like the subgenre skip in 3 to be a pseudo-slasher film. I need to buy the 4K boxset from the UK
17:14 I had trouble with this as well. Why would she clone herself and not be able to experience the younger sensations and experiences?? I then realized that she is experiencing Sue BUT not shared with Elisabeth which is why the Substance is quite cruel. Demi Moore actually is experiencing Elisabeth and Sue but at different intervals. Sue has all the past memories at birth and is a much younger Elisabeth in a perfected form but with her own autonomy. They don't share experiences because she's her own body but with Elisabeth's conscience in that moment. Once the conscience is transferred back then she's older Elisabeth again. Imagine one of those dreams where you are a younger perfect version and you'll do anything to stay dreaming so you don't wake up and keep living that life ( even though you never fully remember the details, you know you enjoyed that dream). Older Demi Elisabeth knows Sue is a dream and toxic for her health but she now is dependent on those dream experiences so she continues with the Substance. ANYWAYS fabulous review and insight. New fan here. ❤
Cheers! We're so stoked that you liked the video. I really haven't gotten over this film. It's like mental molasses in that it stick with you. You're spot on about Elizabeth/Sue's relationship. I mean how else would Sue know how to walk/talk etc. I hope this gets a 4K release over here Thank you for watching
Few films have been so shamefully overlooked, prejudged and disregarded as the fantastic 'Psycho II'. Everyone simply assumed no sequel could ever come close to the Alfred Hitchcock original. Far from being some soulless cash grabbing gore fest a la Friday the 13th, 'Psycho II' is a genuinely intriguing mystery which contains Anthony Perkins' finest performance as Norman Bates and we discover much more of his character. Meg Tilly is outstanding as Mary, the niece of Marion Crane who is initially intent of driving Norman insane again in an attempt to get him reinstitutionalised, but develops feelings for him. Jerry Goldsmith's score is superb, so far from Bernard Herrrmanns original and i personally find this film much better that 'Psycho' and imminently more re-watchable.
It's like Amityville II: The Possession to The Amityville Horror. I can't say that I prefer it to the first one but they are very much on par as a one-two punch
Another great video!
Thank you :)
Fantastic review! I had chills listening to the description! I must say, I really like the short form videos. Great work!
Cheers brother, thanks for the feedback. We like shorter videos too hehe. This film...you HAVE to see it,
@@shitcast2024it is on my list now brother
Definitely check out Perkins other movie, Gretel and Hansel. Best review yet
Thank you mate, we appreciate it! It's on our list of must see movies. the fact that he is making a King film made me squee with delight
Great video. AMIL was a big influence on my own writing.
It's a seminal film and I'm glad you found inspiration from it. I practically quote it every day
Hell yeah!
Aroooooooo!!
I enjoyed the film. Rupert and Bautista were great in the film.
I think that they were too! (Warren)
Oh no! Hope you have a quick recovery.
Thanks Frank. Weight bearing as of this week. Fingers crossed!
You guys are so good...I thought it was just me being fussy when I watched this movie when it first came out maybe I wasn't wrong after all...lol
I think you probably have the right opinion
I haven't seen this movie yet. It's releasing on 4k in a couple weeks. I actually can't wait to see this movie.
It's an adventure, thats for sure
Hey guys
Hello
The Caesar reboot Planet Of The Apes trilogy is one of the best remake or reboot movies out of all the remakes that have been done to death. And the trilogy is the most consistently good since Lord Of The Rings. New film is great too. Fantastic world building.
Exactly! Well put, I agree. The world building is what sells this series and sets it apart from the other "Big Monkey" series that is quite frankly, flogging a dead horse. Compared to this series, the Kong movies are quite bereft of any nuance or care. But then again, people like Dan Stephens
I still need to see this. I like Prey at Night as well. G
Ironically I havent seen Prey at Night. I will do just to get a better sense of the series....sort of
Warren has seen it and he reckons it’s terrible! It can’t be worse than Zombie 4 though, although that movie has a banger of a theme song! 😂
I was recommended a movie today as the best terrible movie ever: Birdemic (2010). It is apparently a horror movie, so I thought you might like to see it too. The person who recommended it loved it. I don't think you will though. 😅
Great video! I love this movie, and can't wait to own it.
It is going to rock in 4K! I'm glad you liked it my friend
Can't wait to see it!
I think you'll like it if you're like us and just wanted a good time at the movies
New subscriber! I LOVE this movie! 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Hello there Kathy! We're so happy that you've not only subscribed but also love this movie. What was your favourite part of the movie?
Wow! I've never had that experience of the theater showing the wrong movie. Lol.
It happened to me when I saw Jurassic Park in 93 as well. I hated that film until 2013. Now i see it for the epic masterpiece that it is.
In the 70s, I went to see A Star is Born and they showed the reels out of order. I didn't realize it until I watched the movie years later… I had always thought it was just the most confusing movie ever.
This happened to a few friends of mine (Warren) when they watched Mission Impossible for the first time in '96. Pays them back for going without me!
Warren I can't believe you said what you did about Australian movies! Shocked 😳
Just like every country, there have been awesome Aussie movies and quite a few shockers. I am starting to really deep dive into them again as I realised that there are gaps in my Aussie film watching. Don't stress I'm not a hater. Anymore.
Hearing that Flanagan has the rights gave me goosebumps. Thanks for the video.
I know right!! If anyone can make it work, he can!
