Closing a Grip Genie GG4 gripper
According to Cannon Power Works this is between an Iron Mind CoC #2 and a #2.5. However I'm following the rules of the Grip Genie Discord server which are much easier than Iron Mind's rules. - Grip Genie: After you set the gripper, it has to open up so that the handles are parallel and then you close it. - Iron Mind: After you set the gripper, you have to let it open up to the width of a credit...

You do squats after sld I couldn't do that bro, My lower back would be fried👍🏋️🇬🇧
this makes me a bit dizzy lol
Thanks for the compliment :D
You're supposed to show it open up to parallel which I didn't do too well but the rule is mostly there so that you can't set the gripper to 1mm open so they gave me the approval.
Nice job
Thank you Your Gripness, I've successfully closed my GG4 now. Up until a couple weeks ago, I was able to close it only sometimes if I was lucky and everything was perfect. Today I did 3 successful closes 5 minutes appart.
Great superset
JE CROYAIS QUE C'ÉTAIT UN BUG !!!
Nice!! I just closed the gg4 myself
Nice! I'm working my way up to that one. I can get the ends less than 1cm appart right now.
Update: I've successfully closed the GG4. My grip has been improving slowly until about two months ago when I started getting close to closing. I started doing grippers more often and a couple weeks ago I was able to close it but only if the stars were aligned. Today I successfully closed it several times.
(btw nice vim and tmux setup)

"No angles were changed during the making of this video" that's one of the funnier things I've ever heard absolutely wonderful video!
Thanks, I was going for something like "No animals were hurt during the making of this movie". I guess you got it if you thought it was funny.

Sorry about the sound :)
Nice video. I wish you had done the descent to Côte-des-Neiges, though. I always looked forward to seeing that line across the road that indicated the top of the climb, because it was all downhill after that. ;-) Great memories.
no sound?
Whoa yeah!
Merci Luc!
I have no idea.
Attention!!
Nice climbing!! Good job!! I think the app might be slightly off on elevation though. The top of the climb goes to 217m, summit is at 233m high. It's not your fault of course. =)
Nice lap, dit it yesterday for the first time, a challenge! Can you tell me what did you use to record? and have the speedometer at the screen? thank you.
The camera is a GoPro hero 3, the and the ride data is collected by a garmin edge 810. It receives data from GPS, speed and cadence sensors were included because I bought a garmin edge 810 bundle. And the power is from a stages powermeter. The software to put the data in the video is Garmin VIRBedit (a piece of software for their VIRB action camera which is their version of a gopro). I take the whole video and put it through that software to render a video with all those goodies displayed. Then if I want, I use FinalCut pro to do video editing with that video. (I.E. I only use VIRBedit to put the overlays on the video)
Philippe Carphin thank you
The reason this happens is that in ray-tracing, we launch many rays, and for one ray, we follow the following algorithm: launch ray from origin O in direction d, | find the first thing this ray intersects with | | (An intersection with a surface can be represented by t > 0 st O + td is part of a surface, | | so we go through all our surfaces and solve O + td == EQ for t. where EQ is the equation of a surface). | | To get the first one, we take the surface where that t was smallest. | If that surface is opaque, return it's color | else (it is transparent) | | launch a new ray with new origin = O + td (the point of intersection), | | and new direction calculated with the laws of refraction or reflection. ***** Here is the problem, O + td, is a point in the surface so in the next iteration, when we want to find the first thing that this new ray intersects with, it's quite possible that it will be the actual surface that we launched the ray from. We might get stuck in a loop a bunch of times were the point moves slightly inside the surface and the direction varies slightly. To resolve this, we take O_2 and d_2 the origin and direction of the new ray, then we replace O_2 with O_2 + eps*d_2 with eps being a small number to make sure that the originating surface is slightly behind us when we launch the new ray.

What is the background app?
+Hubert Dupuis It's called 'VIRB edit" made by Garmin. It's made for the garmin VIRB action camera, but I use it with a GoPro and a garmin Edge 510. You take a video, and the data file of a ride, and with the help of the software, you align the two by selecting a point in the video and a point in the data file. Once I have the full video with the overlays, I use other Final Cut to do some editing if I want.
Do you prefer to sharpen on the King stones these days, or do you like your old routine better?
+Andris Kompelien Now I have cholera stones that are a bit better. I mainly use a 400 grit cholera which cuts super fast and then a 1000 grit chosera which is a bit finer than the king 1000 grit, and a chosera 3000 grit, then a strop with some green stuff (chromium oxide). By "my old routine, do you mean that other stone that I showed? My routine at first was DMT diamond stones 600 grit and 1200 grit and ending with that other stone that I showed which is a 3000 grit stone that is quite soft and works quite well. I like the king setup better because a lot of knife sharpening is about feel: you know what you're doing from how you feel the knife glide on the stone and I think that is something that is missing with the diamond stones. With waterstones I get a lot of feedback that I just don't feel with diamond stones. The difference between the king setup and chosera stones is that they're a bit pricier (a lot in fact). But the difference when you use them is smaller. I would say that I like the chosera better but it's not a big difference. Since the king setup is about 100$ and add to that maybe 15$ + 5$ for a small paddle strop and some green compound on amazon, you've got a complete setup able to produce scary sharp results. One that could be your endgame set. At that price it's worth it to try and if you don't like it, you can give it away to someone in your entourage that might be interested.
+Philippe Carphin wherever it's written "cholera" please read "CHOSERA".
+Philippe Carphin Thank you for the detailed answer, very helpful! I'm currently using DMT Duosharp stones and some ceramics from Spyderco, but I agree that diamonds doesn't give you the best feel in the world. I just ordered the same King stones you showed in this video, and I made a sink bridge out of wood today :p hehe I haven't tried water stones before, so I was just curious how you felt about the change from your old setup to the new one. Now I feel a little more confident about trying them out after reading your reply :-)
+Andris Kompelien Dude, if you already have diamond stones, you'll love the transition. Just find some Murray Carter videos where he sharpens stuff (CarterCutlery on RUclips) to learn how it sounds and watching him coupled with learning with experience in the main way that I learned. And LISTEN TO ME, buy this stropman.com/Compact-Leather-Strop-Compact.htm DO IT NOW, don't even think about it. You'll know why you did it when you rub some of that green stuff and strop your knife a couple times. You'll know why then. But seriously, I'm not kidding, I would get knives shaving sharp on the king 6000 with a nice mirror finish, then I do the knife for like 10-20 times with the black compound, then 10-20 times with the green compound and the mirror finish becomes really mirror, and in like 30 sec the sharpness goes up from shaving sharp to hair popping sharp. Basically it's the most worth it thing in all of knife sharpening money wise.
+Philippe Carphin I would add that you can see me do the thing with the strop in my video, but in that one, I spent a lot of time thinning the knife to give the whole blade a mirror-ish polish so I had been at it for such a long time that I kind of rushed the actual sharpening part, and even then, you strop it for two seconds and it compensates for that and it gets as sharp as if I did a good patient job on the stones. But when I do a careful good job with the stones, and I strop the knife on the green stuff, OH MAN, it goes into super-sayan sharpness.

What are your general thought on this 2 King stones? Do you recomend them for Begginers and advance knife sharpeners? How polished is the 6000 grit finish? any need of a 8000 grit? Thanks
They are very good. They are not the best and I have upgraded since then, but it's mostly a luxury. Murray Carter (youtube channel CarterCutlery) uses them and gets knives razor sharp with them. I haven't been able to reach that sharpness just from the stone, but once I'm done with the 6000 grit, it only takes about 10 passes on a strop with chromium oxide (for most compound manufacturers it's the green one). You get that kit from wherever (I got it for 100$ at cartercutlery (dot) com), and a Tandy leather strop from amazon for 10$ and (Amazon will show you bars of compound in a buy together with... option. FYI a 1 pound bar is a lifetime supply). With these items, you have a very complete kit for sharpening knives. An 8000 grit stone is overkill, especially for a beginner. The strop with compound is much more forgiving. One piece of advice, keep some scrap paper handy and cut paper throughout the whole process to know how what you're doing affects the way the knife cuts. Also, make sure you understand and know how to feel for burrs. If you want to skip ahead to what I currently have, and consider to be pure awesomeness: Chosera 400 grit (useful if you have to sharpen really dull knives) Chosera 1000 grit, and chosera 3000 grit (or 5000 grit, I have both but I always end up using the 3000). Then I finish with the strop on green compound. But those 3 stones will cost you about 240-260 at paulsfinest (dot) com. Also, king stones can be soaked and left in water, and the 1000 grit needs about 15 minutes of soaking for best performance. Chosera stones are splash and go, and they MUST NOT be left in water as that would destroy them. One more thing, the king 1000 grit stone is thick because it wears away quite fast, where as the 1000 grit wears a lot slower. Oh and another thing again, you need to keep these stones flat A) by making sure you wear them down evenly, and B) by using a flatening stone once in a while. Murray carter says that you can rub them on the sidewalk, but I've never tried that. Fel free to ask me any questions you have in the future.
dont soak your chosera stones!! they are splash and go stones you could ruin the binding creating microcracks in the expensive stone! only soak your king stones
Thanks, I got chosera stones just last week. You may have saved me a lot of money.
your sharpening but only the secondary bevel not the primary bevel so that why when you get to the chosera stone the edge hasnt been refined a single bit since the diamond stones increase a couple degrees on each side of the blade until you begin hiting the primary bevel you only sharpen the secondary bevel if the knife edge is getting too thick
Although I don't do it in the video, I usually do it when I started sharpening with these stones: I cut paper all through the process, and I can tell you that there is a difference in the way the edge cuts from one stone to the other. you can see in the second video when I cut paper, that it's not cutting like an unrefined 220 DMT edge. At least I can't get a knife to cut like that off a 220 DMT.
Merci.
Bonjour Philippe, j'aimerais savoir avec quel programme tu as créer ton image.

(Continued) When you add graphical commentary, you'll see a little icon in the notation to indicate that there is graphical stuff on that move, which will reappear every time you are at that move. To delete graphical commentary, you can just click on the area outside the board (the table). I like to draw the arrows as I'm speaking so I don't save the graphical commentary. I use Fritz 13 so I don't know if yours will have this feature, but in any case, search for "graphical commentary".
Drawing arrows and highlighting squares is done with the ALT SHIFT and CTRL keys, ALT = Green ALT+SHIFT = red CTRL+ALT = Yellow to highlight just click the square, to draw arrows, you click and hold on point A, move your mouse to point B and release the mouse button. This will give you an arrow going from point A to point B.
How do get those arrows on :23
Well done !
