Restoring The Notorious Corvette Headlights! | 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Headlight Restoration
Hello all! In this video, I'm restoring the headlights on a 2014 Corvette. These headlights had it all, microcracking, oxidation, old clear coat, and scratching. This was my first video recording at the Flea Market location we just opened up at, which is going surprisingly well! I'd love to do a live stream sometime at the flea market once we get our Carport and Wi-Fi set up. Exciting things to come!
I started with a 320 to remove all the imperfections. Once it was well removed, I moved on to the 400 grit to remove the deeper scratches made with the 320. Once that step was complete, I finished with the 600 to get the lens prepped for the clear coat. Since the clear coat has filling propert...

    What is the blower you are using, and would it be to use a hair dryer? Also, unless you did but did not mention, but I did not see you use an alcohol wipe.

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights День назад

      It's one from overseas. I was sampling different ones for the website, which should be online once the site update is live. No, you must use a higher pressure blower. Its mainly used to knock out loose water. If you skip that step, and apply the clear coat, the pressure from the can may knock out the loose water and drip on the freshly coated lens. At 10:57 and 19:37 is when I am cleaning with the alcohol.

    is there, and not sure if you do yourself, a list or cheat sheet that shows if lens type is a blah blah type use blah blah or DO NOT USE blah blah because blah blah will or might happen? Or maybe something with make, model, year and lens type so this type of method works best or worse. I know not all lens are of the same material so it makes sense that certain applications will or won't work for them. Pardon the long winded question.

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights День назад

      No, but that is actually a very good idea. I say this humbly, but only someone who does this as a business could create something like that since we run through so many different makes and models. All lens' are the same material, polycarbonate, however, the makeup of the clearcoat is different. There's no such thing as a "softer" or "harder" material lens, they're all the same, its the factory clear coat that makes the difference. Honestly, there's only a select few that are difficult, most are very easy. Knowing what grit to start with, and your method make all the difference in the world.

    In the process of a start-up in my city here in New Zealand, I have been thinking about it for some time, one negative comment i got from my father was that it was an "Add-On" service to a specific car cleaning operation, but the same could be said for specialist medical service. My pitch and marketing will vary, some towards the safety and functionality aspect "See and be Seen" a Warrant Of Fitness is something required for all motor vehicles here in NZ and are often failed due to headlights not being sufficient, also going to market it as an aesthetic improvement "faded and foggy?" , and then the fleet vehicle pitch aimed at business fleet vehicles, bulk work bulk discounts etc, bulk reviews too:). With regards to making it a fulltime operation, your probably not restoring headlights all day everyday, but managing backend business operations, finances, marketing, promotions etc should be a fulltime investment of time and energy for the benefit of the business. You are probably doing this already but instead of travelling all across the land to every single customer the method which i am going with is booking customers ahead of time and focussing only on that area for each day, creating a level of need within customers and maximising my time and energy.

      You'll get a lot of negative comments, I get them in the comment section every day lol I had a family member say something like that when I was first thinking of starting. If your business is strictly headlight restoration, you're classified as a "Specialist" since that's all you do. People are much more interested in going with a specialist rather than someone who just does it as an add on service. Incorrect, I was doing it full time, all day every day. Since I have employees now I don't personally do it as much as I used to. I'm more focused on the marketing, and growth of the business now. I can say first hand, you can scale this to a 6 figure business. Its such a slept-on niche that hides in plain sight.

    I'm having the idea of this kind of business for almost a year now but stuck in the IT work from home job that pays well but sucks completely and can't get courage to start this job.(I have family of three kids...) Been doing it like a side job/hobby/illegally for few years now. Been through sand and polish techniques, few restoration kits, and latest I've been doing it with sanding + polymerization (acetone vapor). Did you maybe used it and what's your opinion on it? Is there any particular reason why you don't use cordless orbital sander? -also do you have some kind of database for customers so you know when you restored which car so you have evidence in case of a failure within warranty period? Greetings from Croatia

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights 12 дней назад

      This is your sign to do it then! Start it yesterday! Acetone vapor isnt good for the headlight, it can cause stress cracks in the future, and it also doesn't seal the lens, resulting in oxidation pretty soon. I don't use power tools because its excessive in my opinion. The old clear coat and oxidation is a very thin layer, theres no need to remove multiple layers of the lens to restore them. You also have more chances of burning the lens, damaging the paint on the body panels etc. Yes, we keep an Excel spreadsheet that we track everyone of our customers. I can tell you the first vehicle we ever did :) What I'm seeing a lot of issues with people starting this business, is they're afraid to invest. They don't want to spend money on advertising or marketing. They're comfort zone is spending $5 a day on Facebook, which will get them little to no results.

    I have done a couple of head lights for car that i flipped/rentals i have but never tough of it as a business your video have me the idea to offer it as a side job i have always used 2k clear as im experience autobody painter i have had great results ....how long would the clear coat you used last for? Is it a 1k? Thank in advance

      With the right push, you could make it a full-time job. 2k's clears are terrible for the headlights since its not designed for polycarbonate. Its a 1k, no need to activate it. It can last between 3-5 years depending on the application, and how well its taken care of.

      To be honest, I don't remember to ask until I'm starting the process. I have a solution though :)

    I think u need to do more research kid. I do lights off to the side and The Headlight Restoration Pro could really help you. I was just looking at different ideas and ill take his work over yours any day. Look him up on RUclips, youll see. Just trying to help ya.

      After watching the Headlight Restoration Pro it seems his method is a bit overkill. I don't see the point in 6 extra steps to reach the same outcome. Plus i can get an all in one kit from this guy! No need to buy 30 different products.

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights 22 дня назад

      I've done that method already when I first started, its exactly why I am doing this new method. If you are a hobbyist, or someone doing it "on the side" its good, but as a business doing it full time with employees, its not feasible to spend an hour and a half to 2 hours doing 1 vehicle. I appreciate your input though!

      @@TeriyakiPapi Agreed. Theres a stigma with headlight restoration that it takes hours and 10 different steps to do. Thanks for your input!

    What are you spraying on a headlight while you sand it!?

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights 22 дня назад

      Just regular water brother, helps keep the sand paper from caking up, and allows me to see the progress.

    Hey I really could use your help. I got everything and practiced on one of my wifes headlights. Turns out the tape I bought is bad for this. To much adhesive and the tape itself turns to mush. What brand do you use?

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights 22 дня назад

      Just regular Scotch 3m Painters Tape. This tape is good for wet sanding, because the adhesion turns soft by the time you're ready to remove it, reducing the odds of pulling up paint. I'd recommend automotive tape the next time.

    So just sand with water, then spray clear coat to fix?

  • @grandmastert01
    @grandmastert01 27 дней назад

    Hi Brad , because I’m in upstate NY I don’t have the constant sunlight to cure the coating. How long does it take your UV light to cure the coating enough that it’s dry to the touch that if the customer has to leave I don’t have to worry that the headlight won’t get messed up

    • @StartRestoringHeadlights
      @StartRestoringHeadlights 27 дней назад

      Hi Tommy! Maybe 5 minutes for both lights. It dries it pretty quickly.

      The spray is from nextgenheadlightsolutions.com. Use coupon code "SRH" for $15 off a single kit if you only need one. The paper is from Lowes in the Tape section
