Ban Vinai Closing Down
Video documenting the final departures from Ban Vinai camp in 1992 before it closed, including family and friends saying goodbye as the buses depart and the very last families waiting until the very end: a barber still working among the ruined buildings; a woman sewing pandau with smoke billowing behind her; an elderly man making metal spoons in his empty home.

My family resettled in Nong Khai Refugee camp and I remember one time traveling to see my grandparents in Ban Vinai, we were jailed by the Thai police! I don’t remember how many days we spent in jail but we were released and traveled onward to Ban Vinai. I don’t really have any recollection of my visit in Ban Vinai, only our time spent in jail.

I was 7 years old with 3 younger siblings when my parents brought us out of Laos. We spend around 4-5 months in the US/Thai military base, Nomphong, Khon Kaen. We were moved to Ban Vinai during the fall of 1975. Our family live there from 1975 to August of 1978, where my father was one of the leaders and the head principle for the new makeshift school in Ban Vinai. Our family were sponsored by a church in Seattle, WA and we arrived in Seattle in August of 1978 rejoined our grandparents and a few uncles and aunts, who came to American a year earlier. As the oldest child at the age of 9, I started school in the 4th grade and graduated from high school in 1987. Went straights to college in MN and graduated from college in 1992. In 1988, I went to Africa to serve in the job corpse for 3 months during my freshmen year in college. I follow my college graduation in the spring of 1992, with a 4 months intern in French Guiana, South America. I got back and marry my wife in September of 1992, right at the beginning of the closing of camp Ban Vinai. Since my 20s, I have a wondering memory of Ban Vinai and even go so far as seeking/talking to many Hmong people here in the US about their experience in Ban Vinai and ending of this camp. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
