Individual Project: Front Wing Design for a Formula Student Car
This video is a summary of my third year individual project, as part my MEng Mechanical Engineering with Aerospace degree at the University of Southampton

This is a gem of a video, basically a front wing crash course. I am curious how you would even start designing the f1-style morphing airfoils on the front wing, it looks so complicated. Also, do you recommend any resources to improve CFD skills and front wing design knowledge?
That’s full on 2017-18 F1 wings levels of complexity! My former team never managed to make any wings, so I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to research/manufacture this thing
Can you create a video/timelapse of how you modeled those complex wings? They look amazing
unfortunately I’ve left uni and so I don’t have a solidworks license buddy, I used lofted elements, which require a starting sketch (2d), an end sketch (2d), and connecting guide curves (at least 1, as a 3d sketch), I used two 3d guide curves per lofted element, for one on the leading and trailing edge of the aerofoil. takes some fiddling with! Lofted elements and surfacing templates are your best bet!
S1223 is crazy, we use that on our car as well
S1223 is insane, our team did a huge study testing hundreds of different wings and it cleared every other cross section at the speeds we were testing at!
Did you ever do a study on MSHD profile? @@aj.k
This would be extremely hard and costy to manufacture
Hahaha definitely!! perks of doing a completely theoretical project you can go crazy! As part of SUFST that year we did also produce and manufacture a much much simpler design with those considerations in mind, with some of the lessons of this project incorporated into the design
Really cool getting to see each iteration change & the reasoning behind it. Great video
Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words, looking back on it 2 years later there’s so much stuff I know now that I wish I’d put into it!
@@aj.k can you discuss what these improvements would be? maybe make a video or just leave a comment with short bullet points. Thank you!!
