Free Greenhouse or Will I Be Singing The Blues?

I got a Free Greenhouse from Craigslist many years ago, but it was left at our old homestead when we moved. It's been a few years, but now we need to get it moved easier said than done. It's been used as storage, it has a tree growing out of it, It has miles to go. It's going to be a lot of work, but we really need to get it home in one piece, so we can get a start on our spring vegetables. Wan...
Three Dead and Counting! Now What...???

We have had chickens free ranging our small lot for several years now and they are pretty well protected between our location and my dog. We have rarely lost any, but this winter, has been the exception. Three dead in as many weeks, even after locking them up at night and nothing in the live trap to show for it. Now What? I had already intended to build a new pen, because as you can see in the ...

While this is not exactly homestead related, I came across this video from about 10 years ago and just had to share it. Our dog, Jasper, used to love singing along while I play. Even when he was outside, if he could hear me playing, he would try to come inside. If he couldn't get inside, he would just sit by the door and sing. In this video I play random bits of fiddle tunes. You will notice th...

Thanks!
Matticoop hands down. 15 of 16 hatched. I put weather stripping on both sides of the turner to prevent clunking from one side to the other. Second, shelf liner in the bottom. Babies get thier legs stuck in those holes and I suspect this is why some chicks develop leg problems. Only a theory. I also put straws crossways in those holes to create 16 cradles so egg stays straight up. I do no more than 16 at a time.
Creative ideas.
Day one of my second hatch. First hatch ended yesterday 15 out of 16 hatched. The swinging one. Awesome incubator
Congrats!
Using one for the first time for a dry hatch. Today is day 20 and we can't get the humidity up enough. When we do, it drops. It had dropped to 40 something between 3 and 6 a.m. we're honestly not expecting a hatch.😢
How did they do? If you aren't adding water, 30-40% would be about what I would expect, at least for my part of the world.
Thank you!
You're welcome
Receiveing mines today thanks for the review bro

The annoying fan motor in the Harris Farms is a cheap sleeve bushing motor. I replaces mine with a ball bearing equivalent and been happy since! I do love the bright display though, wish anyone had the same in a larger unit.
Great to know.
Will the Maticoopx work on uk voltage pf 230.240 volts
That I don't know. It is a standard 110v plug that works here in America. I honestly don't know what would happen with an adapter, but it doesn't come with any.
What time lapse settings did you use on the camera?
Actually, on this one, I just let it record straight through. Then, I sped it up in DaVinci Resolve. My only issue was that I lost the memory card with the second half of the hatch. I found it a year later... lol
I would like to see one of the lower end brands off eBay. Have you tried one of those?
I have not. If I need to buy another, I look into them.
@@growinggreenways5623 on day 16 for my hatch. And it was an eBay incubator called the M16 incubator. Will keep updated in a few days.
Is there any left?
They were alright!
Looking into a Maticoopx. I unscrew my NR360 to clean it. Does the Maticoop have the option of unscrewing the base and taking out the motor, to avoid the potential for water getting in it?
No. You would have to take the motor off (just a few screws, but plastic may not do well with long term removal, reinstallation. Personally, I just sit mine on the side when washing with the motor on the side facing downward. That keeps the water from getting into the motor. I let it dry out for a few days before plugging back in if I am concerned about any moisture getting in the motor.
@growinggreenways5623 thanks!! :)
Was this filmed in 2004 ?
As the upload date suggests, it was filmed and uploaded last year in the spring of 2023.
The egg trays are great without dividers. I just loaded them with duck eggs and only five fit in each one. If there were dividers set up for chicken eggs there would be six slots and worthless to me. I load them point down and lean them all toward one end. When candling I start with the last one in a tray, replacing it in the same spot but leaning against the other end, leaning the others against it as I go. Temp is dead stable, checked against another calibrated thermometer, but half a degree high. The only other thing is I cover the whole thing with a towel, except the humidity vent, since the clear plastic is not a great insulator. The heater doesn't work as hard and it is cheap protection against a short term power loss. Update: Three hours after writing this, near tornado winds knocked out power to the area. I have a backup generator that took about an hour to get running (I have to go out to start it manually and weather was nasty) and the incubator temp dropped about three degrees. Once power was connected it recovered in five minutes.
Yeah, its a great incubator. As far as the dividers are concerned, there could simply be plastic inserts that could be placed where needed depending on eggs size. (Like a lot of tackle boxes have. Here's an example: amzn.to/4aAxP1V) But it doesn't, so I do the same thing you are doing and just lean the eggs.
I like mine but humidity to high. No way to raise it should have a separate control for that
The humidity is adjusted by using the little half circle window the front and the water trays in the bottom. I keep my window open about half way most of the time and you only put water in try one for the first 18 days. After that use tray two to raise humidity. If I need more humidity, I close the window more, and if I want lower humidity, I open it more. If you are doing this and still have high humidity, you may be in a humid environment that doesn't require adding water, or it could just be that your humidity sensor is off. Also, if you add hot water, it creates more humidity when you put it in and sometimes even condensation on the lid, which can get on your humidity sensor. I always recommend room temp water. Just a couple of guesses, since I don't know your situation. Hope something in there is helpful.

Great work cody!!!
Thanks
I never add water . Dry hatch rules ...anyway
It seems to be environmental. I know there are people in different areas that don't, but I experienced a significant difference in hatch rate when I started adding water (humidity at 55%, 75-80% last three days) rather than dry hatching.
@@growinggreenways5623 when i add water they all drown in the last 3 days...but my humidity is rarely under 60% in my house lol
Yeah, that would do it. That is perfect for hatching. If I don't add wate, my hygrometer drops down to the low 30's.
@@growinggreenways5623 mine does too in the incubator but first pips its 70%
Hey, if the chicks are hatching and healthy, that's all that matters. Thanks for sharing that info.
That egg turner looks suspiciously like an egg candling light... great review tho brother.
Could be
Dude those bee boxes cost more then that shabby building,
Yet manners are free and so many people can't seem to afford them...
Small thought, not sure how they go in there. But if needed, and it looks like its tall enough. Try getting a long metal mesh grate, or something like that, really even metal screen door mesh, to try and keep em out. We did for some of our bed. Just make sure yhe metal is solid and strong enough.
I have meant to make me a little pvc frame covered in chicken wire for a few years now. I just haven't gotten around to it. I have a a screen door from an old sliding glass door that I laid over it, but it wasn't long enough and they could still go in on the ends. I probably need to get to making those frames...
@@growinggreenways5623 That's fair. Welll good luck on whatever ya end up on.
Pandas do like bamboo
I can't disagree with that.
I LOVE bamboo but I live in a climate that gets super cold in the winter and super hot in the summer 😢 wish I could find a variety that could handle my climate!!
Our Black Bamboo handles the heat fine (South Carolina can get into 90's during Summer). It isn't bad during the winters normally, but it did get down to about 10 degrees last winter and killed part of my patch. (Particularly the canes around the edges.)
A greenhouse like that is $150 on amazon. You just got conned into cleaning up someone's big mess for virtually nothing.
LoL.... Sure, go ahead and get you one... 😆 🤣 You can see me set one of those up and get an affiliate link in this video 😆 : ruclips.net/video/-IWWk39JY1A/видео.html While you are at it, why don't you warn everyone not to purchase a car when Walmart has bicycles for sale for $150... Those greenhouses are fine if you don't have any options or you need a cheap way to get started, but it's not going to last more than a few years, tops, and isn't going to be energy efficient. You also have no way to regulate temperature for your plants, so you will be constantly babying it. Unless you're just trying out growing, you need a permanent structure like this to make worthwhile and good luck getting the materials to build it for $150. Besides that, most of the stuff in there was mine (watch the full video), and that bee keeping equipment you see me pull out of there is worth 100's of dollars by itself...
I also have to say, I'm glad $150 isn't a big deal to you, but for a lot of people $150 is a big deal. A few hours of work for what amounts to $50 per hour isn't really a bad deal either. A lot of people don't make anywhere near that per hour.
😢 Is everyone okay?
Greenhouse needs some rewelding, but everyone involved is ok.
Update: I got one fruiting from this batch, but ended up letting it dry out when we our business was running us hard. Oops... If you are trying this, please know that I would do one thing differently. I would chop the straw up with my weed eater so that it would fit more tightly together. It was too loose putting it straight in like this.
Is it a green house 🤔 or a grown tent
Thanks for taking time to add a comment.
Good to see you had your dad and the boss up there helping. Looking forward to seeing some seeds get started.
Well, I had to have someone to blame for putting it in the wrong place... I got a late start, but I've already got some seedlings popping up.
What does your greenhouse setup look like? Are you utilizing any unique or out of the box methods for it?
The Nurture Right incubator is best suited for hatching backyard eggs, where tossing and turning won't matter because they are sturdy backyard eggs. Ebays ordered eggs are very delicate so it's best to use the Maticoopx because the eggs don't get rolled around, it just tilts the eggs and the eggs' membranes don't get any more damaged.
Yeah, ordering eggs is already stressful enough. Having them in a good incubator is important.
Take half a dozen and put'em in a papr bag for a few hours, then blend them up in water and spread where you found them. You'll find a good flish next season.
I've made a slurry a few times years ago. I spread some around my old homestead. It was hit or miss, but I actually had one spot where it took and started producing small amounts of morels there.
Where's your spot! I really want some! 😂
Good luck....
LoL, There should be some good spots down around your area. I found one on the riverbank where all the people fish for the white perch a couple of years ago. Where there is one, there should be more. Look for river/creek bottoms with poplars, sycamores, privet hedges, and/or mayapples.
Looks like all Bantham silkies. I have a lot
These are Australorps. It amazing to me that a solid black chicken is half white as a chick.
Ur the man! Little bit of common sense goes a long way!
Absolutely
Spot on, but it would be a good idea to add an earth wire to the metal frame for extra safety 👍
Was going to say as long as it’s not double insulated but not much about that is insulated so yeah. Ground that frame 😂
Yes, it has a threaded hole on the motor for a ground wire. When I rewire the electrical, I am going with 3 strand wire and will ground it then. Thanks for the comment.
@@joeclifford183 Thought I might add some knob and tube so the motor doesn't feel out of place. LoL
You should consider adding ground wire to that metal frame.
Yes, it has a threaded hole on the motor for a ground wire. When I rewire the electrical, I am going with 3 strand wire and will ground it then. Thanks for the comment.
Wiring that way creates a ground loop, which is at best a shock hazard and at worst a fire hazard. Don't try to repurpose a fan from the 1950's in order to save $20.
That's not a group loop. That is how a motor is wired, you have to complete the circuit to generate a magnetic field in the coil.
@@longobardirIf the "one bare wire" is connected to the metal frame of the fan, which is then grounded through the metal frame of the greenhouse, then this guy just created a ground loop by connecting his neutral to ground. Even if it wasn't designed that way, but now makes contact with the metal frame, it is now a ground loop. If the "one bare wire" was a disconnected wire that used to be paired with the hot wire, then he "may" be safe as long as he is certain that no part of that bare wire is touching the metal frame. That's a lot of uncertainty and risk for something that is literally $32.38 on Amazon right now.
@AdamHowellProvo Hey Adam, thanks for commenting. The second wire is not connected or making contact with any part of the frame. It is connected to the fourth coil and is insulated from the coil all the way to where it is connected to the thermostat. So this setup shouldn't be any more dangerous than if I plugged in a box fan as far as I know, but I'm always open to learning more. As for the fan, if you can, send me a link to what you found online. Anything comparable to this is easily over $100 from what I have seen. If you found one that cheap, that would be awesome for people to know where. Thansk.
Please note that this is different from a box fan because the fan motor housing is metal, and can conduct electricity. Typical box fan has an entirely plastic housing, so doesnt need grounding. Going from a 2 prong setup to a 3 prong setup with the green wire connected to the motor metal housing would be the ideal way to repair this fan. :)
@@AdamHowellProvo you missed the part where he said other end of the coil "wasn't connected to anything" The neutral wire probably had been ripped off at some point.
Just buy a new fan
real
Yeah, just go out in your back yard and pick some money off of your money tree, geeze. These poor people, don't they know how to be rich?
@@schrodingerscat4737yeah! Instead of telling him to to buy a $20 fan, lets not say anything as he connects the fan's metal frame to his neutral, creating a ground loop which eventually burns down his home and greenhouse.

@@growinggreenways5623 i think Amazon is always out of these lol
It seems like it sometimes. If you see them available, you definitely have to jump on it.
Random question but why do eggs need to rotate? Do chickens rotate there eggs when they sit on them? Just something I was curious on?
As the chick is developing, it can get attached or stuck to the shell. Rotating keeps that from happening. And yes, the mother hen does rotate her eggs by moving them around with her beak while she sits on them or when she gets off the nest/moves around in the nest. Much of the artificial incubation process is modeled after what the hen does instinctually.
My friends hatched deformed chicks and chicks stuck to one side when the incubator is not turning. So it's a nust to turn the eggs for proper chick development.
hi, Do you know who makes the Maticoopx incubator? origin ? Thank you.
As far as I can tell, the manufacturer is simply Maticoopx. They do not list any other company as a manufacturer. I don't know anything beyond that.
Thank you very much for your informative video. Have you ever frozen the coffee grounds until you were ready to use them?
You are welcome. I have not frozen them. With my wife's coffee habit, I have never had a shortage. I can't imagine it would make a difference. Freezing draws the water out, but it should re-absorb when defrosting.
Nice!
Thanks
I have been trying to find one online, any suggestions?
