Eurothrash 2024 Day 8: Aix-les-Bains to Luxembourg via Switzerland (Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchatel)
Day 8 on Eurothrash 2024 and it was a longish ride on the BMW R1250RT LE from Aix-les-Bains through Switzerland and into Luxembourg where it lashed down with rain and we were glad we had fully waterproof Klim riding gear (we had moaned about now getting new mesh jackets up to this point).

So after a rest day at the First Dates Hotel - aka Le Vieux Castillon - we headed off to Cannes in 38C temperatures. We won't mention the crash when we were filtering through slow speed traffic to get past a road cleaner who unexpectedly took us out, achieving a 66 degree lean angle, apparently, as the BMW R1250RT laid down for a bit... No need to: that engine can produce good numbers and it handles perfectly well enough for trackday fun, even on stock shocks. The bike weight is always going to be the limiting factor.

    The motorcyclist has to take a lot of blame here. There are arrows indicating to keep left and the bike rider is ignoring them and overtaking. Personally, if there is any turn off on the road, i would not overtake which has kept me on the bike since 1979 without an incident. I am 70 now and have 4 bikes. One is a Triumph Rocket 111 and a Thunderbird LT plus 2 old bikes. There are videos of the old Triumph on my channel. Nasty accident and you are lucky to be here. I did have a big bump in 1979 and the insurer paid out enough to buy me a house and new car. I have a lot of pain still and had an operation 25 years after the accident to fix my knee. Hence the large payout due to problems lasting 45 years so far. I can barely walk now but can still ride

    Great video. Aside from the beautiful scenery your video also revealed the appealing performance of BMW’s lack lister navigation system. A yr ago at age 62 I moved away from Adventure bike riding to touring riding by trading my 2021 Africa Twin for a 2022 R1250RT. I absolutely love the BMW it would instantly trade the nav system for the Africa Twins Apple Car Play. Apple car play never once let me down while riding the numerous back roads and highland hills of Ontario Canada. I now routinely put my trust in Google maps on my cell phone, never an issue but it would be great to see the map on the large BMW screen. Come on BMW get your act together.

    Ride a 2015 BMW RT and had an opportunity to ride my friends 2023 RT. The bike felt a little more balanced and the exhaust note was a little deeper in the bike, and of course the TFT was amazing. The only thing I would like is for the NAV to have a satellite connection understanding you lose connectivity in the U.S. where’s there’s no coverage via the cell carriers.

    Hey there, Rich. One of my questions I intend asking my local motorrad dealer concerns the integration of the sat nav on the bike. I've read and heard accounts that there are problems. As an owner of a BMW car, my question is why would the navigation be inferior by comparison on the bike? Have you got it working to your satisfaction? If there have been updates, I wonder if they'll be available retrospectively for 2023 models. Any thoughts? Cheers, Bourne.

    • @RichardHMorris
      @RichardHMorris 9 месяцев назад

      It's a good question for them and I'm pleased I don't have that comparison to make. Why not simply have CarPlay on the RT? It's a no-brainer, surely? The BMW Connected App needs both Bluetooth and a wireless connection between the phone and bike to work and does not have any "safety camera" alerts for supposedly dangerous sections of road, rather than getting prompts from Waze or Maps, etc. It also drops out from time to time. BMW: JUST ENABLE CARPLAY!
