At last someone is talking about this thank you. Fly campers have increased in alarming numbers across the park. Although many claim to leave no trace this is simply not true. Anyone litter picking after them will confirm those camping on lake shores, islands and inappropriate places on the fells always leave something…Often it’s a lot including, on occasions, all their camping gear. I am tired of finding human faeces in our beautiful and precious places. These people are not contributing to the economy of the area. They arrive self contained with food and drink bought from supermarkets outside the area and do not support local businesses. Camping has become an end in itself, often involving alcohol and drugs. Genuine wild camping has been permitted above the high fell wall to enable committed walkers and climbers to enjoy extended time on the fells without the need to return to a base. This is very different from fly camping. National Trust Staff are powerless if these people refuse to move on and the Police offer no assistance. We need some changes in the Law to give someone the powers to fine…Who that someone is needs discussion with the authorities involved in managing the National Park. There is a case for funding a dedicated team of Police Officers or potentially outsource the security of the area to a company suitably equipped to impose consequences on those who do not care for this are and its communities.
