Yamaha Pacifica 311H vs Reverend Warhawk DAW
Просмотров 16 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I discuss and demo two similar but also very different guitars - the Yamaha Pacifica 311H and the Reverend Warhawk DAW. The similarity is that they both have an "HP" (humbucker - P90) pickup configuration, but they are also very different in terms of scale length, tone wood, fixed bridge vs. trem, etc. Links to sections of the video: 1:15 - Discussion of Yamaha Pacifica 311H specs...

Microphonic Feedback with Covered Humbuckers - Is there an easy fix?
Просмотров 10 тыс.3 года назад
Does your humbucker equipped guitar produce unpleasant high pitched squeals in the presence of a loud amp? I have two such guitars (Fender American Professional Telecaster Deluxe and Fender Alternate Reality Sixty Six), and I saw on the Dylan Talks Tone channel that this problem can often be easily DIY'd. In this video I will demonstrate the problem, implement Dylan's suggested fix, and finally...

12:10 Humbucker 112 12:51 Humbucker 612
Im enjoying the fact that everytime you go for the switch its in the "wrong place" compared to an SG for example haha. Lovely looking guitar!
I'm just going to remove the cover ala jerry cantrell whino on my 92 LP custom whino
Thanks man!!! You’re a lifesaver…done subs…
It’s called microphonic feedback. It’s caused by metal covered pickups that are set closely to the covers. They vibrate and cause this. My old Harmony guitar did the same thing.
How hot are the pickups?
Thats an easy fix ? WTF dude just buy new pickups
Thanks this worked on my bass. It had so much handling noise before and now its much better!
Much more body on the 612.
Wish I had one of those new Pacificas to compare against these! I sold the 612 though....
Awesome demo, very close! @Themanncave on the Lead preamp ( me80 ) l noticed the Middle control is so subtle you can barely hear a difference from left to right. Is yours like that or there’s something wrong with mine? Bought it last month from a music store used but like new in the box. Any thoughts?
I'm not sure - I have moved on to the Boss GT-1000, and I generally keep the mids pretty close to 50% most of the time. I think it is a cool unit, though. So easy to get a usable tone.
I got my grail Explorer this past weekend…. A Natural finish vintage Japanese Burny REX-80 and it is by far the best guitar I have ever played, and I have played Peter Frampton’s Phenix!!! The Americans may have invented the LP and Explorer and Flying V but the Japanese perfected them!
Was it just the angle or were there chunks missing out of the fretboard???
It was lighting and angle - they were tooling marks, but not really noticable in real life. Still, for that much money, maybe they shouldn't be there at all.
I used the me-80 for years but now I’ve got the me-90 and it’s totally revolutionary. You can use the four cable method with it so that all drives, compressor etc is before the amp (running into a real amp) and all time based effects take place in the amp’s effects loop. Other advantages include a switch to enable the cab emulation so you don’t have to trick it with a dead plug. It takes four batteries instead of six and just sips power. Lastly, with the optional Bluetooth, you can tweak it with your phone, including the ability to tune in the noise gate, move where the effects loops is in the chain, if desired, and access the tuner in a way that shows much more granularity and can tune down to just 0.1cents. All in all, a totally worthwhile upgrade.
I played around with the ME-90 - it definitely seems like an upgrade to the 80. I have been using the GT-1000 for almost 2 years now, and I tried the ME-90 against the GT-1000. I liked how the GT-1000 sounded a bit better, but the ME-90 still sounded pretty good too!
Have you ran both into a PA (direct box > Mixer> 2 12" 2-way boxes?) Thoughts?
Yes - that is how I always run it. Works great. I've actually moved on to a Boss GT-1000 - it has stereo XLR out which I send straight to the mixer then out to PA. When I was using the Iridium as my amp-in-a-box, I went to DI box.
Shopping for a first guitar... appreciate your review! Cheers dude :)
Happy shopping!
Im having this exact issues on all 3 positions on my les paul knockoff. Both bridge and neck pick ups. What could be the cause ? My gibson doesnt do this
maybe - I am starting to check if the pickups are potted before I buy things these days so I don't have to mess with things like this!
@@themanncave2143 found out it was the bridge pick up cover on mine. Took it off and its fine nownlol
You can dip the pickups in wax. And Use noise reducing tape on the back of the pickguard. There are videos on both.
What about hot glue gun?
That could work.
Nice review helpful
Thanks! Have a good one!
I love Explorers. The only reason I didn't buy the antique natural one is because you can see the seam lines in the multipiece body. It's a shame because I prefer natural over black or white.
That is some gnarly tear-out on the fretboard beneath the 6th string on frets 12-14 @ 4:10
That’s what I saw. But no mention of it. I didn’t understand that either.
Yeah, I thought about sending it back, but in real life, it is not actually noticeable unless you shine a light on it at an angle. It plays like butter and sounds great so I decided to keep it.
@@jimyounger9490 I didn't notice until after I made the video, but I mentioned it in the text description of the video when I posted it. Thanks for watching!
VG bench test A v. B thanks. SD Coils and HB edges it with a fuller fill of sound . 👍🏻
Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend!
good that you tell the different sound characters between the 2 types
Glad that came through!
Dude, thanks so much for this video! I'm having exactly the same issue on my guitar (it's a squier though) and I'm probably trying this today. It's really annoying not being able to use the overdrive as much as I want because of the microphonic feedback. Nice work on your guitars!
Thanks man! I ended up switching those humbuckers out for the CuNiFe widerange pickups - need to do a video on that.
Nice guitar. Looks just like mine, except mine is from 1976 and has the baseball bat neck ( limited edition)
Man, those '76's are cool. Like The Edge!
After doing this is there any changes in guitar tone?
No - sounds the same to me. Thanks for watching!
Great review. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
I Love my Gibson Explorer. I got it 6 months ago and it pretty much became my Go-To guitar. I have other Gibson Custom Shops I play less. I Love the Neck. It's just fat enough and the fret board is flat and comfortable. You can fly down that fretboard.
Yeah, the neck feels awesome. I have since gotten an SG ('61 version) and the neck on that thing is pretty great also.
Bigsby is a bigger gamble with tuning issues.
For sure. Definitely loose a little tuning stability, even if everything is working perfectly. But I'm willing to sacrifice if it isn't too bad, which it isn't. Gigging that guitar tomorrow night - got the confidence!
Thanks KC! Nice video, but you got to fix your audio man! Your mike seems to be far away from you. But overall great video upvoted!
Thanks - yeah, still figuring out the mic stuff!
adhesive silicone would have been much easier to use and works great...
Yeah, this method is a bit of work and it is easy to mess up a pickup.
Its irreversible, so resale value of any vintage guitar goes way down. I would never buy and old guitar with that mod. For modern guitars it doesn't matter.........
Yamaha is the best one
thank you for pointing the camera at the case so the interior is exposed when opening, not the back so we can't see jack shit. Nice to see the candy as well.
I LOVE my me80. But i wish i kept the GT1. Although the gt1 was more digging and scrolling menus the Me80 has subPar cab Sim utilizing the headphone jack to activate it. At times its great but others is fizzy. I would like to find a preamp or sim pedal to run with it but not sure how that would fare. The Me80 is still powerful and intuitive. I think though, i may offer mine locally for something differnt. Great video.
Sub 299!! Dang I'm one off. Hahah
nice..i have a cheap 70ies les paul copy that i like but i have the same problem..will try this later🤓🤓
I have been wanting an Explorer for many years, and bought one about 3 years ago (just like yours). It was a beautiful guitar and had a great all around sound and feel. The Burstbucker 2 and 3 pickups were well suited for clean or high gain, and had surprising clarity and definition. My complaint was more with Gibson’s quality control. The guitar had a terrible buzzing/popping noise when you touched the strings or pick guard, and when I turned the bridge pickup volume to 10 it would crackle an go silent. If that wasn’t bad enough, the neck pickup was canted rearward (out of the box!) caused by the threaded pole piece screws hitting the neck tenon… requiring them to be cut short so the pickup could be adjusted and sit level. Rather than sending it back under warranty (and wait 2+ months just get it back unresolved), I opted to use shielding paint and replace the controls and wiring with a Starr Guitar pre-wired control set. Problem solved 👍🏻 It’s unfortunate after spending $2,000, I had to wind up spending a couple hundred more to make it right. Great video just the same 👍🏻
What Pickups come in that Guitar ???
Burst Bucker 3 in the bridge, and Burst Bucker 2 in the neck.
Thanks for the comparison. I've been using an ME-70 for smaller gigs and studio. I recently tried the Iridium thinking it would be an improvement on the Boss models and then spent a week trying to get it to sound as good as the ME-70! When pushed with an Archer as a clean boost, I feel the ME-70 copes better and compresses more. The Iridium has better low end focus but that tends to get lost or removed in the studio for mix clarity. I think Boss got it right by focusing on the essence of the amp’s character rather than doing an exact copy.
Good video, thanks buddy.
Just yesterday I got the left handed Gibson Explorer “Antique Natural” that I ordered from Sweetwater. It was a demo model but it’s so clean I can’t tell it was on their store floor for a bit. Not too many lefties so I imagine it didn’t get played as often as the right handed versions on the floor. Mine was PLEK’d, I’m assuming by Sweetwater, by default. I say “by default” because the price for my demo model was $1799. I just pre ordered (just before ordering this Explorer) one of the new Epiphone ‘58 Korina Flying V’s (lefty of course) and the normal price for those is $1299. I paid an extra $379 for it to be PLEK’d and to have the PLEK machine cut a new TUSQ nut as well as set it up with 8-38 strings (so the strings cost something like $7). I also ordered a new Levy’s strap for it too. All in, tax and all, it was just a hair over $1800. So, I’m guessing they PLEK’d my Gibson by default because I’m not seeing any extra cost added to it. Anyhow, my Explorer also had the same photograph of itself in the case too. I assumed it was it being checked over by Sweetwater but after seeing your video I can only assume it’s a pic of it while it was in Nashville at the Gibson factory. Cool. At any rate, so far I’m loving it. It’s my first Explorer and it feels GREAT. Plays super fast and easy. The PLEK really made it feel incredible. I have many “high end” guitars (Gibson LP’s, an Ibanez JEM7V, a USA Jackson Soloist among many many others….about 24 so far) and this Explorer feels just as high quality. I’m glad I snagged it when I did. For us lefties it’s only a matter of time before Gibson cuts us off of the Explorer and this one’s value will increase quite a bit. Like my USA Soloist…..Jackson isn’t offering the USA Selects in left hand any longer….so it’s worth currently around $3800. I paid $1300 for it back around 2018. Score! Anyhow, nice guitar.
Thanks for the vid. I have the Boss and will not be replacing it with the Stryman. In fact you can't because the Boss does so much more than the Stryman. I even run the Boss through a Boss Katana 100 head and disregard the onboard Katana effects. Let's be honest...the ME-80 is a classic board and that's why it's still in production and highly popular after all these years!
Great Demo. Sounds awsome.
i liked this video because you were honest with telling us you have never done anything like this before lol. im glad it worked out for you. the reaction was genuine! There is many opinions on how to install HB covers like this wax idea or even drops of silicone on a piece of masking tape on the slug side for protection against the pickup..... The pickup itself should be wax potted itself like when you buy an aftermarket one, but this is a great way to put a barrier between the metal cover and the actual pickup and potentially eliminate some squeal.
It's the Korina explorers that are usually around 7 pounds. The gibson USA explorers and Certain custom shop models are made from mahagony and those ones are much heavier then the Korina ones. The original explorers from 58 were Korina and when Gibson brought back the explorers in 76 they were made with all mahagony they were meant to be Korina but when Gibson got the shipment of Korina it was deemed unusable due to the quality so mahagony was used. Gibson did not do a Korina explorer Reissue untill 1983. It's hard to source Korina of good quality in the amount Gibson would require. So Korina reissues are aways limited and only happen sporadically people argue and say that is BS and will point to epiphone and say look epi can do constient Korina models so why not Gibson ? Well it's simple epiohone Korina guitars are not real Korina. They are alder bodies with Korina veneers on the back and front
New Epiphones are solid Korina. Also , I just bought a this Gibson and it only weighs 7.5 lbs 🤷♂️✌️
Explorers don't really sound like les paul standards . The all Mahagony explorers sit in between an SG and an all mahagony les paul custom but also have their own thing going. Explorers have an early clear midrange which is why metal players like them so much. They cut trough a Dense mix and stay defined under heavy drive the way a les paul standard won't. If you like SGs but want something bigger sounding with more bottom end and top end. An explorer is a great choice. If you want one thinking it' will sound like a les paul standard then buy something else .
Good observations. I think I am more of an SG/Explorer guy. I recently picked up an SG and sold my LP.
Damn that fretboard looks like ass. Otherwise stunning guitar. I like the finish.
It really isn't as bad as it appears in the video. The angle of the lighting emphasized it. It is hard to actually see in real life.
I have a Firefly SG with this issue. I’ll have to try this method.

Does it have to be wax or it can also be another isolation material? I am under the impression that the heat not only will melt the wax, but also will affect the pick ups.
When I pulled out the pickups and removed the covers, there was a foam with adhesive on both sides between the pickup and the cover. So I guess you can do something like that. I don't think heat levels that melt wax will affect the pickups. Wax melts at low temps and the pickup parts (copper and other metals) are unaffected by these temperatures.
Man that guitar is nice I would one in red
They could mix up the colors a bit! All they have are natural wood or white.
