Troubleshooting Speak & Spell - won’t turn on
Have an old Texas Instruments Speak & Spell, Speak & Read or Speak & Math from the 80’s that doesn’t turn on at all? Here we go through the steps to troubleshoot and hopefully fix this issue.
Summary of things to check:
- fresh C batteries (qty 4)
- batteries are installed in the correct way? Check the diagram molded into the battery compartment - remove and reinstall as needed
- connectors that contact the batteries are clean and corrosion-free?
- getting 6 volts DC at the battery connectors?
- getting 6 volts at the points on the circuit board where the wires from the battery connectors attach?
- short out the pins shown in the video to power on the circuit board even if keypad is not worki...

    Hey, I was wondering if you could help me, I am a totally blind person working on a speak and spell, attempting to modify it with braille letters, which can easily be done, I was wondering if you had any other methods of labeling the on and off buttons, as well as the go button and all the other buttons that are not labeled to be more blind accessible, this is the model of the speak and spell that has the power adapter, headphone jack and the membrane keyboard, not only am I attempting to label it for blind people, but I actually taught myself how to fix electronic toys as a blind person, I have watched a few videos on the speak and spell. and I thought the videos were really cool, I was actually showing someone else what the speak and spell looked like on the inside, and I broke two of the clips trying to get it apart. it still works, but it is now like a toy that is missing a couple of screws, the clips broke in a way that cannot be fixed, this is my first speak and spell I have took apart, so naturally, I would break a few clips despite being completely blind and having no idea of what you’re doing, my question is, do you know what I can replace the clips with? I have took apart several other electronic toys over the years to salvage parts from them, I have salvaged motors, speakers, wires, and screws and pretty much everything you can think of from used electronic toys, which is really cool, only reason why I am writing all of this. Here is in hopes I can find a mentor for someone who is completely blind, but the main reasons I am writing this here is to see if you have any creative advice for labeling, I also want to know what I can use to replace the broken clips with, my only solution would be glue, tape or adhesive, if you think of another solution, that would be amazing. have a good day, and thanks, I cannot wait for the reply to my comment!

    got a quick question for you! I just put batteries in my SS for the first time in a few years. Immediately it glitched then smelled. I've taken it apart and it looks like one of the transistors is for sure burnt. Looks like it's a QB 2015 CY. What's a suitable replacement for that one, I've looked all over and can't find any info.? I'll switch out the caps as well, which probably caused the problem in the first place. Any help appreciated!

    My S&S was working fine when I put it in storage maybe 3 years ago . Now it gets stuck in what appears like a glitch or a boot loop , displays SPELL A but gets no further , emits a clicking noise and is otherwise unresponsive. Is this an issue you’ve seen before ? Thanks 🙏

      This does sound like the capacitors may need replacing. Any chance you could post a video with sound? If I hear it then sometimes it helps me better guess what is up with them. I did once have a unit develop a permanent freeze loop, it sounded exactly like one of the bends I use but couldn’t be freed from it even after de-soldering all my wires. I ended up having to scrap that board and swap in a replacement for my customer. It’s rare but I have seen that at least once. Caps would always be my first thought though especially it acts a little more randomly / unstable.

      @@fastmatt_circuit_bentgah, haven’t got around to this yet, but I’m 99% sure it’s the PSU. Strangely I can’t find a schematic showing the values of the caps on the PSU - is there any way you could share that please ? I’m sure I can fix them myself with this information. Thank you in advance 🙏🙏🙏

      It’s so frustrating- I’m loathe to throw it away or sell it as junk when the problem is likely a component that costs Pennies! And nobody wants the new speak and spell! Someone forgot to keep the mojo, obviously not produced by geeks and those with passion!

      @sprialingprism I don't have a schematic of the board but I do discuss the capacitor values and locations in the video above. I can do one better and list those values in the video description for easier reference. I'll do that now. (edit: DONE, see video description)

      @fastmatt_circuit_bent 4 месяца назад

      If you may have damaged it with an incorrect external power supply then that’s probably not what is bad in your case - you most likely popped just the transistors. But that cylindrical cap is a 47uf 25v electrolytic capacitor.

  • @RockyMountainSounds
    @RockyMountainSounds 5 месяцев назад

    I just picked up 3 units. One blew up on me when I plugged in the AC adapter (blew the cap on it)- so have it for parts but wonder if I could easily fix it to bend it ultimately. Then I got another S&S and S&R - which you are tempting me to bend.

    • @fastmatt_circuit_bent
      @fastmatt_circuit_bent 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment and sorry for slow reply here, @rockymountainsounds . These things unfortunately don’t have defensive circuitry such as fuses to protect against over voltage or backwards voltage so this is a common issue when trying an adapter. I usually recommend never using external power especially for circuit bent items. But all is not lost. In your case it most likely only burnt the transistors on the smaller rectangular power board that is attached to the main circuit board. I’ve been meaning to do a video on that repair. If you can email me a pic of that power board I can give you some specifics on what you need to do for fixing it. Pretty easy if you have basic soldering and de-soldering tools. You’d need to find the appropriate transistors or I could even mail you some for a reasonable price.

    My S&R won't switch on after many years of working great. Can you recommend troubleshooting tips? I have a voltmeter. Also, while trying to get to the underside of the circuit board I accidentally disconnected the ribbon for the keypad: does that just slide back into the connector or have I done some permanent harm? The power circuit is labeled PCU-312A. Thanks, hoping I can bring it back!

    • @fastmatt_circuit_bent
      @fastmatt_circuit_bent 6 месяцев назад

      Hi @bencolemanart, for the ribbon cable it is a bit fiddly but definitely possible to get it back up in there. The later models had a more firm material at the end of the ribbon, if you are lucky you’ll have that and it’s a bit easier. If not - it takes some more patience. I probably should make a short video on how to do it. The idea is you need to get one end of it started into the connector, I use a small jewelers screwdriver (flat blade) but never force it to where you tear thru the ribbon. Just barely press it in at one end to get it up in there. and then with an index finger and thumb, firmly support the ribbon cable and gently work it into the connecter further in from that end you started to the other end. Hope that makes sense. I will share some more troubleshooting tips here in a few hours, I have some tricks for diagnosing power issues.

    Hello from Calgary, Canada @fastmatt.. I found one of your Circuit Bent Speak & Spell in a thrift store today and I didn't really know much about it, but it looked cool, so I bought it. It's the "Circuit Bent Speak & and Spell ROUND BUTTONS" model and it has a handwritten note at the back of the battery cover saying "Bent by FastMatt 1-13-08". When I figured out what it was, I installed 4 fresh batteries, but unfortunately it's not working as expected and I was wondering if you could repair this item and how much would it cost me. Thanks very much! Fabio.

      Wow, what a trip that it ended up in a thrift store - that’s a great find as I sell that model for $249 normally when I have them in stock. But definitely happy to help! The first thing to check is that the batteries are in correctly as per the diagram, and make sure the metal contacts are touching them - the round button model’s battery contacts sometimes need a little adjustment. You then want to make sure the bend circuits are off. There are two switches on the sides - one is a 3-way loop switch - put it in the center position (off). The other switch is a two way (glitch). Put it in the lower (off) position. See the pitch knob? Turn it so that it is at the center of its travel, not all the way up or down. With those bends set that way it should work like it did from the factory. Next, turn on the power switch at lower right corner. THEN press the ON button on the keyboard. Did it come on? Should hear sound, see the display show ‘SPELL A’.

      @@fastmatt_circuit_bent Hi again and thanks for your quick reply. Sorry it took me a few days to respond. I know you sell this model for $249 and I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I downloaded the manual for this specific item and it's definitely acting weird. I get the "SPELL A" on the screen, but I can't get past that. Right switches are off, knob is on center, left switch is on and when I press the ON button, the message "SPELL A" appears, but that's it.. No matter what buttons I press, the machine doesn't do anything. Both blue lights are on. Not sure what's wrong with it and I imagine it would be difficult for you to tell me something with the poor description I'm giving you; but it would be great to get this machine working again. Any thoughts? Thanks again!
