Turn it over. The back has more tooth. Hot press is for those who have learned water control. It doesn't like to be drowned. More paint less water. It's also great for WC markers and pencils.

I’m afraid I haven’t, but I plan on getting some the next time I buy new watercolor paper, and I’d love to do a review on it for anyone interested. Most hot press watercolor paper is at least a little smoother and less textured than cold press paper, if not completely smooth.

@@adriandoyleart Would love to see your opinion on it! I wasn't sure if the hot press was as good but am open to getting the cold press instead if the paints behaved better on it!

Cool! I haven’t tried the Saunders Waterford watercolor blocks but I’ve seen them around. Would you say you have a favorite paper?

@@adriandoyleart it's tough because I'm still learning the qualities I like, and knowing what I should be looking for, but probably Strathmore 500 travel pad. Just the right tooth, and the paper behaves to my skill level

@@marodriguez212 Well I’d still suggest the Artist’s Loft Cold Press Watercolor Pad as a cheap but quality option, but if you’re looking for any sketchbooks for watercolor or mixed media I would suggest the video I recently made on sketchbooks, The Etchr sketchbooks in Hot AND Cold Press (Cold Press in particular if you like the Fabriano Artistico paper), and the Delta or Beta Stillman and Birn Sketchbooks, or the Hahnemule Akademie Sketchbooks.

My current favorite is Etchr but if you’re looking for a more affordable option the Stillman and Birn Watercolor sketchbooks are pretty underrated in my opinion and come in softcover and hardcover versions

Thank you! And I’ve been meaning to try BaoHong’s hot press watercolor block. If you don’t mind my asking, I’ve been looking for gouache brands to try that are a little more professional than the Himi Miya or Arrtx gouache but not quite as pricey as Holbein. Would you happen to have any suggestions?

Out of the ones I’ve tried I’d suggest Etchr and Stillman and Birn’s Delta and Beta Watercolor sketchbooks for anything good with swatches. Stillman’s the easier of the two to find in store and online and a bit more affordable. I really love both for swatching, but given my budget I’d suggest the Delta. Etchr’s paper is beautiful, but the watercolor sketchbooks by Stillman and burn are also really nice quality, and I didn’t mention it in the video but if you’re looking for a hardcover sketchbook they also come in hardcover versions of the softcover ones I reviewed like Etchr.

I started out with a Royal and Langnickel set bought unused at a garage sale, which were fine to begin with. Then I bought 8 tubes of basic mixing colours from M Graham. They’re beautiful to work with, although more transparent than other legacy brands. After I bought them, RUclipsr Sade Saves the Day produced a 5* review of the better brands. I think she’s left YT, but you can probably still find that video. I highly recommend it! Another RUclips channel to seek out is Sarah Burns, who is a gouache artist . She recently did an exhaustive research/test & follow-up of several brands of gouache dispensed into palettes, ‘dried’ and then compared with ‘out-of-the-tube’ gouache. I think you’d enjoy the thorough analysis! It was fascinating!

I haven’t had any instance of them popping. I believe they have some gel in the center, but have not heard of them popping or releasing that gel in any instance other than someone biting into them. As long as one doesn’t try to bite or chew on them, they should last pretty long. Hope that helps.
