Using OAMP as an alternate preamp

No-talking, just listening to EUNA compared with guitar straight into amp with short cable, true-bypass pedalboard and more.
What Is EUNA?
Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
A bit of backstory about what EUNA is, and why EUNA is with designer and builder Jesse Honig. . . . EUNA is the Elite UNity Amplifier from 29 Pedals. It replaces a conventional input buffer on your pedalboard, gets itself out of the way of your fuzz and generally tidies up after itself.

    I am playing Country. Johnny Cash style and a little bit of Duane Eddy and Hank Marvin. I don't use any pedals. I have two Harley Bentons (a Strat and a Tele) which I play through a Harley Benton Tube 15. Great gear in spite of the low price. Will these two pedals you are selling be good for me? I do a bit of chicken pickin, which I will probably dig deeper into later. For that I might need some compressor pedals and God know what else pedals. But other than that I don't see myself with a big pedal board. I am mainly an acoustic guitar player.

      It's always so hard to say, I don't think there's any piece of gear that you absolutely need for any genre of music. I try to make high quality tools that support the fundamental tone of your guitar and amp, and the strong bright cleans of a chickin' pickin' style could be a really good match. We have a lot of great local dealers around the world, I hope you get to try the pedals in person! Let me know if you do.

      @@29Pedals I bought the electric guitars and amp about a year ago. All I have been doing is so far is to work on my skills and the fundamental tones of the two guitars and amp. I will be doing that for the next year too. After that I will begin to dive into pedals. I play a lot of Hank Marvin, but I am not a fan of all the effects he is using. I prefer Mark Knopfler sound and all the twang I can get. I think your pedals are the only ones I have found which seem to be made just to enhance the fundamentals. So I don't see any reason not to buy them now. I don't have access to a shop where I can test them. Which pedal of yours should I buy first?

    Super cool piece of gear! I really respect the purpose and attention behind a lot of the decisions. One question - From a multi-instrumentalist point of view, how does the EUNA function when seeing input signals other than passive guitar pickups? Say active bass pickups, piezo pickups, microphones, reamped signal from an audio interface, etc?

    • @29Pedals
      @29Pedals 6 месяцев назад

      Hello! EUNA has very high headroom, so it can handle all those signals happily. Piezos are especially happy. Active basses, mics and reamped signals are all fine but they don't usually require the kind of impedance conversion EUNA does. The filters will still be helpful and good sounding though, and it's a great sounding line amp.

      @@29Pedals Is there much of a difference between adding a pad to your input to hit a preamp harder, vs hitting it harder on the front end without a pad but moving the fader/output trim down? In theory

    • @29Pedals
      @29Pedals 5 месяцев назад

      @@bassedthechannel Well, if I understand you correctly, you still need to know where in the preamp the pad is to get the full answer. The channel fader would usually be the last place to reduce the level before tape, so trimming a lot there and adding gain (or simply not padding) would most likely result in the most distortion of the preamp and channel strip. Whether the distortion is pleasing or not may depend on the preamp/channel. I think the main point of the tip originally was to allow you to switch in the second gain card, which sounds great but is not necessarily hitting anything harder. A variable gain mic pre like a chip preamp in a small modern mixer or interface will probably care the least. Padding with an outboard pad and turning up the gain will make little difference except creating noise, unless it's a 1073 style pre or something else that actually switches in another card.

    It sounds great for guitar, absolutely, but how does it work for bass in your opinion? I'm looking for a sound I have in my head that I haven't heard for bass in any overdrive / distortion / fuzz: it's kind of what a blues breaker or a booster pedal does to guitar at low gain, and what a hard gated fuzz does to high gain. For low gain I haven't found anything that convinces me for bass, and for high gain I play a triangle muff into an obd-3 with balance and gain at max, both eqd to taste, which is quite harsh and gates it a bit, but it's still not "it". Would flwr work? Sorry for the long message haha 😅 and thanks in advance!

    • @29Pedals
      @29Pedals 8 месяцев назад

      It's definitely a personal choice whether it works for you on bass, but I definitely make sure to pass as much low-end as works with the circuit and always test stuff with bass as well.

My other setup is a Two Notes le clean into delay/verb pedals and those into a Two Notes Cab M with power amp/IR modeling.

    LOL check out all the Behringer pedals!!! Is that why you need an EUNA? 🙂

    • @29Pedals
      @29Pedals Год назад

      What a weird comment - Yes, there are two Behringer pedals in there, out of a quick count of 45 total. I don't hate on stuff simply for being inexpensive or mass produced. Their Vibrato is a good sounding circuit, the headroom isn't any worse than your typical 9V pedal. I didn't love the reverb, but to each their own. As a designer, I sometimes keep things around for reference so I know what other players are used to hearing. How would I know I had succeeded in the EUNA design without a conventional buffer as a reference? And yeah, having a really well-built input driver like EUNA can definitely make inexpensive pedals sound better, as the load they present to the guitar tends to vary wildly over the frequency range and the impedance is often too low, or lower than advertised. EUNA can help out with both of those issues and present a much more stable, high-impedance load that helps the guitar sound more like itself. There's some nuanced criticisms to be made about mass-produced gear, but I am going to stop short of just "LOL"ing an entire brand that supplies lots of musicians with affordable options. I think there's room in the world for all types of gear, just like we have all different types of musicians.

    • @29Pedals
      @29Pedals Год назад

      I would still run EUNA out in front. OAMP could be before the amp's preamp, or at the end of the effects loop to drive the power amp. That depends on the amp, how much you want to drive the pedals in the loop, and the sound you're going for. OAMP at the end of the effects loop driving back in to the power amp is a great choice.
