The Best of Both Worlds: Contemporary Shed-Style Living In An Established Suburb

projectifi.com.au How do you bring country and city together? Matt from MDC Architects worked with a lovely client whose brief was to create a sustainable, low-energy home where she could comfortably retire. The home had to be able to expand and subtract, accommodating the client on her own as well as being large enough for a visiting family.
I also wonder how such an airtight design deals with odours from cooking and general odour in the house. Especially if the peprson building the house is from Asian country. And you know how Asian foods has lots of spices. And after cooking even one meal, the house yearns for ventilation, if not provided, it becomes a haven for bad odours. Please shed some light on that aspect if you can.
Just by looking at it, it looks like agreat design. I wonder if you are able to share more details of the design interms.of the floor plan and details of the Facades from each side. I am a Building and Construction student. Eager to learn more about the whole design and features of this house. Please share details if you feel comfortable doing so. I will much appreciate it. ❤ The design and house it has incorporated all the cost efficient elements in it. Keep up the good work.
I would love something similar to this on my block, I have 798square to play with.
Form and function, enclosing the maximum interior space with the minimum exterior surface. The world better start thinking along these lines, efficient use of materials and energy. Every penny spent upfront towards conservation of energy will pay for itself many times over the life of the home.
Beautiful home, and even more beautiful mini schnauzer ❤️❤️❤️
Are those exterior shades over the triple glaze?
Yes we have roller shutters on all the east and west facing windows. The windows are double glazed UPVC
Large roof over hangs are beautiful and protect the doors, windows and siding from rain and moisture damage. Water is the enemy of buildings. Architects and home builders need to bring back large roof over hangs
It’s mind-boggling how so many houses were built without any shading for decades. Just because verandas were suddenly not fashionable anymore.
@@ProjectifiAU They thought they were saving money on a smaller roof. Short term thinking does not produce optimal results,
Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.
rain is not wasted, it is just returned to the ecosystem, and also in most places it is illegal to store it
If you live in an area subject to high winds, hurricanes or tornados a concrete or cbs build is preferred. Are there efficient homes using this material?
Absolutely, material choices must be based on the particulars of the location. The biggest energy wasters are always the roof, the doors and windows.
What's the measurements out of curiosity or sq footage (or m2)
210sqm internal area
What was the budget?
House only $700k AUD. Cost today is approx. $1m
Is there a reason why you don't upload many videos? Is it difficult to find people wanting to be filmed? Or is it expensive to film a video? Pls i am very curious
All of the above, Atlas 😆
No Floor Plan?
Hi I will love to copy your house, maybe just changing the rooms, would you please contact me for more information?
Looks amazing! Even better if you planted a few trees that will bring you habitat and shade and will bring the house to life.
Thumbs down for that sustainability garbage.
Do you even know anything.
You mean like when leaders across the globe say that global warming is not about saving the world. Rather, it is about redistributing money and changing the power structures around the world. Yeah, I have that knowledge. @@theleanarchitect
I'd like to know more about they systems. I mean it's beautiful we can all see that. But what is in the walls?
Check our our detailed sustainability tour here: ruclips.net/video/jy9Mg-58_gM/видео.html
Modest, simple, understated and high performance . . . and beautifully modern - what's not to love.
Why avoid steel?
Steel has high embodied carbon and acts like a thermal bridge, reducing comfort and energy efficiency. It is also costly and slows down the build process.
You can’t grow steel or concrete.
Nagyon jó,ha ott élnénk pont ilyen házat szeretnénk!
Totally agree, it’s an amazing home!
Anyone know what that ceiling is, with the holes in?

Perfect house . That's how all houses should be
Glad you like the home!
Nice house. The plot is of course small, 1000 m2, 10 acres is for a house of 80 - 100m2. I would like to see the engineering part. The construction of the foundation and walls, as well as their thermal insulation.
Thanks for your comment, Vladimir! Much appreciated. Ben has a more technical video on the house on his channel, please feel free to check it out! Link in the description.
@@ProjectifiAU Спасибо🤗
It seems to be a small town. Well populated area from what I can gather from the aerial footages, 1000 m2 seems like plenty to me. Country side to raise cows, yeah sure, this is too small 🙂
@@EZ-lj3hv This house is in Perth, the capital of Western Australia, with a population of over 2M. Floreat is one of the most beautiful suburbs (my favourite) where you can still find large blocks. The current average is about 370m2, so considering that this is a huge block :)
Do you have a link to Ben's channel? @@ProjectifiAU I'd like to also see the construction side of things.
Nagyon jól sikerült ez is gratula ügyes vagy!
Thanks, Mom 😆😊
If that's your outside I'd rather be inside mate! That backyard looks like a miniature Mad Max ecosystem.
Given they have young kids, I feel like it is ideal. Having a permeable driveway is also a great choice (even though you'd need to wear shoes on it I imagine!)
@@PostImperfect Yes permeable paving was a consideration, but also cost! The gravel was self-installed for a fraction of the cost of concrete or paving.
The garden is coming along nicely, the video was filmed soon after construction before the plantings were established properly.
This was either badly filmed or badly edited, as instead of being a tour, which would have been great, it was just a set of video slides. The kitchen was not even entirely shown
Thanks for your feedback, @newmankidman5763 You're right, this is an architectural video, not a real estate walk-through.
@@ProjectifiAU, I understand. Thanks for your reply
😅nice Design. Looks same like my house from 2004. Only 2 floors. Passive house Standart too in germany. Full build with tji joist 356mm. And a 20cm concrete floor with 25cm insulation under. And 3 glas Windows u =0.76
That house should be toastie in Winter then! I wish more houses were built to higher specifications.
Brilliant ❤
Thankyou Nathalie, we have been amazed by the response to our little home
beautifully designed home and loved everything about it. a bit hard to accept the outdoor toilet though😅. But back in the day, that’s where the toilets were... outdoor.
It is a unique home for sure. The “outdoor” toilet is actually only a few steps away from the bedroom, so it’s a kind of best of both worlds. 😁
Where's the actual tour of the house? Did I miss it?
Please feel free to check out Ben’s channel (link in the description). He’s got a great walkthrough and explanation video of the house.
@@ProjectifiAU Thanks
how much?
Divinely beautiful. 🙏
What a nice thing to say. I'm pleased you like the house
It sure is! Thank you for commenting 😊
I like that he talked about how bad steel is, then we get to see the entire house is literally incased in steel panels... but you know, the beams aren't made from steel so its fine. hahaha
There is a big difference in the embodied energy and lifecycle cost of light gauge steel cladding vs heavy structural steel beams. The corrugated steel cladding provides a lifetime of maintenance free protection to the home, compared to a painted alternative.
Gawd, Aussies have got to be the worst-case upspeakers on Planet Earth.
Ugh. Soooo boring..
This is lovely and clever 😊😊😊
Agree! Thanks for watching 😊
Great looking home and congrats to you for doing it right. I love the simplicity of the structure yet the Beauty of the design. Nice work.
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks for commenting.
Brilliant design!
Thats a very nice thing to say. We are amazed at how well the house has been received. It is just a modest house for a small family. It is not a glamour house - but i think that is probably what makes it unique
Amazing indoor outdoors interaction with nature, Awesome 👌
Glad you liked this charming home!
Ahh, I wasn't expecting them to be in Perth. My hometown! Her accent is so interesting - clearly North American, but with a few certain Australian sounds and phrases (sticky beak) slipped in. Really a pleasure to listen to. :)
I absolutely agree! Thanks for commenting!
looks ordinary
Hi jonwick7635, I am pleased you think so. The house was never intended to be a showy monument, just a simple house for a family. Its great to hear that you agree it is ordinary
you know you've over analyzed what you think is the natural when you take away straight lines of what you thought was a tent. this is funny because in japan we never had tents so we didn't bother making the house round at the edges and kept them straight as the mind desires order in this form. Yet ironically the house looks very japanese inspired???
That’s very interesting. Thank you for sharing your opinion!
im not sure i understand what you mean
How do you deal with mosquitoes? How do you keep them away with all the water and garden?
Hi weiweiweiwei, We have made sure that there isnt any standing water along the stream . Water is all channelled through a little watercourse, and then the frogs and dragonflies do the rest. There are 4 species of frogs who live on the property. They spend time in the water and in the garden. We made little frog houses for them to live in so they are safe from preditors. I think it has worked well. We dont have any more mosquitos than other properties in the area.
This reminds me of some of the beautiful modern homes of the 70's, but I'm sure it's much more environmentally friendly! Love it❤!
You’re right, those simple lines with the breeze blocks echo the glorious mid-century modern style. Glad you liked the project!
Wowww such an awesome house
It certainly is! Glad you liked it and thanks for commenting.
connecting with space, flat, light-weight feel to roof, drainage, simple forms, walk out onto ground level, balance between inside and outside of house
So glad you liked this wonderful project!
Of course it's personal preference, and it doesn't get more personal than your own house, but I'll never understand the obsession with plain concrete.
Thank you for expressing your opinion in a most diplomatic way. As you said, it must be personal preference for home owners and designers. Thanks for watching!
Yes all personal taste, but i dont think we have an obsession with exposed concrete. The only visible concrete is in the tubes, and they were chosen because they could be placed inside and out, to help break down the edge of the building. The material treatments are simple; let wood be wood, let brick be brick, steel be steel and concrete be concrete. Each of these materials have their own qualities... I do tend to agree with you that concrete is over used, especially when it is chosen wholely as a decorative finish, but i dont think this is the case here... A big positive is that there is barely any paint in the house, so far less maintenance.
I love the way she "gave him a set of non-negotiables" and then "gave him freedom." And in the end she gave him credit for being a better architect than herself. 😂 So giving.
It's a balancing act 👍
@@ProjectifiAU Well, as long as you don't balance on your knees. That wouldn't be good.
@@dixonpinfold2582 Nuh.
Well Erica is not an architect. But what she describes is no different from an ideal client/architect relationship. There are actual client requirement, and then there should be room for the architect to achieve those requirements while accessing all their skill and experience to meet those requirements in the best possible way. This results in far better outcomes than if a client just tells an architect how to do their job. That would be a waste of expertise, and a lost opportunity.
@1:43 this is a very polite way to say Oregon turned into a shitty place to live....
Great to see Perth based projects

So much nicer than the mansions you get along west coast drive!
Totally agree! A rare gem that’s not built to outdo its neighbours. Thanks for watching!
