Remarkable Paper Pro Reaction
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.12 часов назад
In this video, we look at the Remarkable Paper Pro, and I give some initial thoughts on the device. While highly innovative and cutting edge, specifically regarding color e-ink, there are significant tradeoffs, and it highly depends on your intended use. If this fits you, it is probably the best e-ink tablet out there for color. Thanks to all the other creators who had time to provide research ...

Supernote & AI

In this video, we take a look at a recent post on Reddit concerning the use of AI in E-Ink, specifically how a user thinks that @supernote_official can compete in the space. Thanks for sharing this! Really cool to see behind the curtain on another channel. I hope you keep it up, I've been following your channel and seeing it grow. And of course I'm always happy to see people into the Supernote :)
Thank you for your kind words and response. It means a lot coming from you. I always enjoy your content.
That looks awesome!!!!!
Anyone else having the issue where the To do list doesn't update on the desktop app? I was looking forward to using it across platforms.
I personally haven't had this issue but would recommend reaching out to support.
Great comparison of different use cases with you and your son. It's super useful. I've managed to sync my calendar with Google calendar now, which also update the calendar on my iOS devices. Need to try more export function. With the handwritten recognition, it will be great to see the convert to text function work a bit better, when I tried, the words don't wrap around, probably because of the number of words that fit into the Nomad. I have a Kobo Elipsa 2E and I really like to convert my handwriting to text and Word doc, so I am hoping that this gets better. I just got an additional pen - Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo which feels different, compared to my Heart of Metal 2 pen. Absolutely love them both.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. As for the text conversion, it doesn't do reflow on the device in a note, that is more of a preview. It does allow for reflow view in Word. When you go to export, it will ask you if you want the text reflowed or not.
I feel this is one of the videos that I need to study carefully because there are so many useful tips. Re "Export" function 17:41, I tried to recognise and export my notebook to Word (.docx) but it doesn't seem to work for some reason.
Thank you for your comment and the compliment. I saw something on Reddit about an issue exporting notes to Word so suggest you put in a support ticket. Thanks again for stopping by.
My observations: 1. The Glass screen is too brittle; too many consumer stories of having to return the device because it broke. I will stick with plastic screens. 2. It is now an A4 size, which is too large for me. Also, I believe that they chose that size to fit a bigger battery to keep the two-week battery life (Gallery 3 eats up more battery life). 3. Gallery 3 is much better than Kaleido, but I do not think it is ready for primetime. They need to improve the refresh rate, the power efficiency, and get rid of that quirk where black ink shows up on the stroke before the selected color. They need to put the black ink particle back in (you can currently get it by combining the cyan, magenta, and yellow particles). 4. Too restrictive; you can only synchronize to Remarkable servers and can only use their pens. I like Supernote's ability to synchronize to other online drives. 5. It looks like front light is possible without sacrificing distance to the ink surface; but is there any objective way to measure that?
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. I think all of your concerns are valid. It appears that not having a Wacom layer may help with the pen to ink distance.
Awesome video, Ed! I'm looking into this myself, and hearing someone I know, talk about it, brings something extra to the topic. I'm definitely going to go this route with a video as well. Thanks and congrats on the success!
Thanks for the comment. I can't wait to see your video, you're growing quick.
@@Change-1820 Thanks, man. We are all growing together.
I'd find it crazy if the A5X2 ended up being in color. Not that I think it will happen. But I'd absolutely upgrade from my A5X.
I don't see them going the color route. 😂
One thing you didn't mention is the other half of the income statement. I run my channel at a MAJOR loss. You will fare better as you don't as many devices as I do, but I still suspect the expenses are still greater than the revenue. But to your core point, it's the craft of making videos, the relationships we are making in the process, and indulging in a passion that is the actual return. The money just cuts into the losses.
Jeffrey, you are right that I did not talk about a lot of that. I tend to minimize those costs by either asking for items (Stream Deck and Logitech Webcam) as birthday or Christmas gifts or using items I have purchased as part of my work as an adjunct professor (computer, monitor, etc.). I also try to use open source or existing subscription features (Clip Champ, OBS, Davinci Resolve, Obsidian) to keep costs down as well. In the case of the A5X, I bought that with a bonus from a previous job and the Nomad was sent to me. I try to keep the investment as low as possible, but you are 100 percent correct that there are costs.
Thanks for sharing Ed, have you considered applying for Amazon affiliates as well?
Thanks Vlad, I am an Amazon affiliate, but have not met the threshold yet with a whopping $3.85 in referral income. The biggest issue there is that I tend to only push devices I actually use or books that I recommend. I'm trying to think of the best way to get that producing more. Very little has come from the actual products but other purchases made when someone keeps browsing. I appreciate the tip.
Thanks for sharing, this was fun! Yeah, I'm loving the group that's focused on videos around these devices. And yeah, it's important to recognise the reciprocity as you mention. (Careful with those analytics though, that's where the addiction lies! 😂 There's just something about the feedback loop you get when you release content and directly see the audience react on these wonderful little graphs RUclips gives us. It's the ultimate flow state for me!)
Kit, as always, thanks for the feedback. I agree and am finishing up your livestream from earlier in the week, loved hearing "intentional use" in the discussion. It's definitely a balancing act and I want to make sure I don't lose the focus on this being "fun." Hopefully that came across in the video. If it was my job, I probably couldn't justify working 10 months for $385. Pretty sure Melissa would have none of that. :-)
Same, I get lost for hours!
Not quite time for you to order that Porsche then, but maybe you could start with purchasing a Porsche key-ring?.... next month? 🙂 Thanks for the sneak view under the hood.
Karl, as always, thanks for the wit. Funny story, when I was a teenager (a long time ago), there was a man who owned a Chevy Chevette and had one of the best license plates ever (Baby Vette). I might be in the market for that...in about 10 years. Thanks again!
@@Change-1820 Zechariah 4:10A “Who dares despise the day of small things!
Great approach and initial review. Would love to see the Remarkable people to expand their sights into a greater distribution. They are in Best Buy and Amazon to a limited degree but further expanding those avenues might permit a reduction in pricing, which is currently high given what these devices do. That said I am waiting to receive the new Pro and we will see what we will see.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. I agree, but think the prices really won't come down until a majority of the players are widely available. Would love to see Supernote in mass distribution. The companies would have to be able to support demand though.
If I was to have only one e-ink device, it wouldn't be this. I do however use a Supernote A6x2 for notes and a Kindle for reading fiction, so the reMarkable will be for reading articles/reports in pdf format and non-fiction epub books, and for sketching out ideas. The colour display, bigger screen size and light is what makes it worth it for me.
Thanks for the comment. It's great that you can have all three, I'm just not sure most people would be in a position to do that.
10:59 Agreed. Being able to write on daily calendar is such a big miss!
Yeah, I hope they correct it soon.

Thank you for the video. One thing I do appreciate about reMarkable is their ability to bring awareness about such devices to the general public.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. I 100 percent agree and don't want to take anything away from them. They seem to be a great company, but really do have more of an Apple vibe in a good way. Apple revolutionizes mobile computing and reMarkable really put e-ink for notetaking on the map. Thanks again for the comment.
Oh, this looks awesome!
It was a blast, top six coolest things I have ever done. My lovely wife and boys beat it out.
Hiiigh $
Thanks for the comment, it is expensive. For the right use case, I think it might be worth it.
@@Change-1820 in your opinion, when do the devices start gong to down in price. Do you think we're still 5 yrs out?
@@chrishamilton1189 that's a great question and one that isn't easily answered. It is going to come down to component availability, production capability and market growth. The Kindle Scribe and Boox Go 10.3 are lower cost because they can afford to be (other device sales play into this as well). Otherwise, it is still a very niche market or they are dealing with components that aren't really "mass" produced. E-ink being the only real provider of screens doesn't really help either. I wish I could give a straight answer.
Good call out on how the Pro removes the side bezel. I was wondering if the screen was going to give more real estate width wise and was thinking that maybe not based on the comparison with the rM2, but adding the width of the bezel into that calc, perhaps it won't be as bad as I'm starting to fear.
Jeffrey, always appreciate the insights. I wish I could take credit for calling out the bezel, but fortunately there are advantages to being late to the party. Voya actually called that out in his video. I tried to balance between all of the videos I was able to watch. I appreciated your insights into how the pixels "move" in the device.
Thanks for adding that tidbit about the device not having a Wacom layer (I had no idea). Now a lot of what I was seeing makes sense. Now to figure out how they did that front light without adding thickness. Good vid!
As always, thanks for the reply my friend. Removing the digitizer Wacom layers I think may help with the distance to ink, which in turn might allow for the front light to not be intrusive. However, as neither a hardware designer, coder, or programmer, I am WAY out of my depth on that conversation. It is pretty much conjecture. I have thought about taking a trip to Best Buy just to get hands on with the thing for a few minutes, but again it is just not the tool I would choose to use. Thanks again for stopping by.

Great reflections! Mine is arriving on monday. The thing I am concerned about is the writing feel and the lack of option to tweak this with other pens or nibs. The thing very few reviewer talk about is that this is Linux OS (yes android is also based on linux) I am a linux user and the possibilities are endless with the linux kernel. The RM2 and the new one is accessible with ssh. On the RM2 you can install syncthing I believe, this solves a lot of the limitations for me.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. I will be interested in your experience with the device. I am just always uncomfortable with altering a device. Even with my Supernote, I am very selective about what I choose to side load. Thanks again for the comment.
This is the commentary I was waiting for you. The thing that is captivating to me about this device is its size. That's the one thing I wish the a5x was maybe another inch more size. Will supernote release the specs of the A5x2 before the release date?
@@tonyb408 thank you for the comment and the compliment, I really appreciate it. I am sure they will be releasing more information on the A5X2, but they did confirm on Reddit that it is going to be a 10.7 inch Carta 1300 Mobius display with 300ppi. While that isn't quite as large as I was hoping, it will be a good size between the A6X2 and hopefully the new A4X2 coming out. Thanks again for reaching out.
I just bought Supernote Nomad and received it this week. It's beautiful. I had initial concern about the size as well but it's been more pleasant than I thought, as I've been using this to take meeting notes. Using this with the Heart of Metal 2 pen works well and I like the weight of the pen. I don't mind the softer screen as I normally write relatively hard, so I don't find it too grippy.
Thx for your work ❤
Thank you for your comment and support.
Isnt that the A6X2?
Thanks for the comment and question. Yes, it is an A6X2 in the demo, but the video is about what should be fixed prior to rolling out the A5X2.
To be TRULY useful, you need to be able to go all-in with Outlook, Google, AND Apple calendars - all at the same time. I keep subject-level calendars on all three platforms, and aggregate them all to a single view - anything that can’t do that for me simply isn’t useable.
My A5X is only showing V2.1.0, and that's the latest available (August 23, 2024) Ratta's website. I "check for updates" and "You're up to date! supernote_partner 2.1.0 is currently the newest version available." ... ?
Had a deja vu moment and realised it was the same screen from your last video... Got really confused. I thought I missed a new video. I think title of video needs to change to suit or the video itself. Maybe reuse last video title and add [Short] or something.
Thank you for your comment and feedback. I am always trying to figure out a better way to go about these short clips. Some people really want them.
That is a waste of 6 minutes, 3 of yours and 3 of mine, never to be regained. Please desist until you have something to say.

Great suggestions, I think screenshoting would be a feature I would use a lot if they implemented that
Vlad, thanks for stopping by and your comment. Did you mean something other than the current screenshot capability? I would be interested to hear more.
@Change-1820 I should have clarified, instead of saving it as A PNG photo in the screenshot 📂 It would be nice for it to be an immediately writable screenshot. In it's current form it doesn't appear you can annotate directly on it
@@VladimirKostek I thought that might be where you were going, something like the global handwriting features. The way it currently is, you'd have to bring it in as a template.
I agree with your points. One more I’d really like to see is for the calendar to be able to connect to multiple Outlook and Google calendars. I have several personal and work calendars, and to be able to see them combined on one device would be great.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, that has been on the roadmap for several years and has a lot of community support.
I am definitely waiting for the a5xs to come out so they might possibly lower the price of the a6x2 😂
With the popularity of the A6X2, I don't see the price coming down but I could be wrong.
@@Change-1820 yeah I figure it won’t, it’s fairly new itself too right? It would be different if it was the updated version that was being released, but the A6 and the A5 complement each other.
It is now September. We expect Ratta to release the much awaited A5X2 soon. I hope they give us some news about the A4X2 which we are also led to believe will become available this year. I worry that Ratta is a small company at the mercy of the manufacturers of their products, who have shown their willingness in the past to cancel or delay supply of key components thus causing surprise delays and termination of Ratta products. I think Ratta should have focused on the A4X2 before pouring all their resources into reintroducing an A5 product when they were forced to stop selling the A5x. I guess that they could not estimate the market demand for an A4 device and were not prepared to take the risk when they have had such good experience supplying the A5 size product such as the various Remarkable, Boox etc products already available.
Thank you for your comment and sharing your perspective. As excited as I am for. The A4X2, I would disagree that it should have been developed before the A5X2. There is an established market, fairly large, for the 10.3-10.6 inch devices. There are not as many 13 inch devices out there and I would assume the revenue from the A5X2 will help them set the A4X2 up for success. Thanks again for the comment.
Very much agree. There are quite a number of features that are half baked in the system. My personal list - have a one gesture/tap way to toggle between two notes or a note and a pdf - write on daily view in calendar - enable links in calendar and pdfs - improve keyword management and search (minor things to let us know what is there) - make sync stable when moving files and folders It feels ratta is responding to users on issues and questions, but not so much on features. It feels this was different 2 years ago.
Thank you for your comment and sharing your perspective. I think they are responding but the pace has slowed somewhat, primarily due to the success of the A6X2 and the delays in the rollout of the A5X2. My guess is that there is behind the scenes testing going on to make sure the software performs on all devices as expected moving forward.

Good valid points. Agreed with you. Workflow video would be helpful to see how people use their devices etc.
Thanks for the comment. I have quite a few workflow related videos if you are interested.
@@Change-1820 Ah cool. I'll have a look. Thanks!
The Supernote is primarily a raw note capture device so it has to be very good at 1) creating notes quickly, 2) filing notes easily with flexible searching features and 3) sending those notes in a standardised readable format to popular repositories like Notion, Obsidian, OneNote/Teams/Sharepoint. The device is very good at 1 with a few glitches, very average at 2 especially with searching where it falls a bit short and below par at 3 with no real note integration with Notion or any of the MS repository apps. As a standalone notebook replacement it is an excellent device. However if it is used as one input channel of several, it is lacking in environments where information from different sources need to be stored in shared repositories. Individuals may buy the device. Companies would likely not purchase.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. There is a good plugin with Obsidian for knowledge management integration. I agree though that better sharing and collaboration capabilities are needed. The way the desktop app currently works (storing files locally on device and in the cloud) could be combined with Onedrive or Google sync to make it very functional. However, I am satisfied with it as a notebook replacement. Thanks again.
I couldn't agree more here. #3 is the only reason I have other devices, honestly. If the export tools were more robust, that would eliminate at least one other device from my repertoire. I find that exporting is becoming the defining factor in eInk for me. The device I'm currently testing doesn't have great exporting tools, and for that reason, it may not be my go-to, even though I like it, a lot. Still though, my SN is the device I use the most, because of reasons #1, and #2.
Thank you. The only thing holding me back from using the calendar is the inability to write on the daily view.
Thanks for the comment. I use it because the integration is good but understand the frustration.
As I've often said, *_aesthetics tends towards fragility_* and I'd much rather a robust device I don't have to use with kid gloves that a work of art. Maybe people think I'm exaggerating when I say reading my bible every morning while taking notes on my A5X... well, maybe a month or so ago I put my Supernote down on my desk on top of a thick large print KJV which sat on one of my Ellicott Commentaries with another on the floor under it. Standing up the corner of the commentary on the desk caught in my pocket flipping the triple which landed Supernote first on the Commentary on the floor with a loud clap. Granted, the stack landed square but still, the Supernote works fine with no issues, I just can't see that happening with say the glass screen of a Boox device of which I have two, and they are both great devices. But my point is, as I begun... that I'd much prefer a robust device over aesthetics and peace rather than fretting about the fragility of the device I'm using. Great video by the way, and let's hope Ratta get it right, but at the end of the day they've gotta make a profit and that might mean pleasing more than us few.
Thanks for sharing this perspective. I also prefer that a device be made for durability first.
As a daily user of the A5X I certainly agree that there needs to be UI consistency throughout formats, but foremost by giving PDFs and ePubs the same linking ability we see in notes. As yourself, I'd like to see Ratta finish off the sound foundation they have begun before adding anything new.
Karl, I absolutely agree and think that they don't have that far to go to get there.
I saw a review of a Boox Palma and went to the Boox website - where I saw digital notepads for the first time. Wow. After digging into the different features & properties of Boox's competition, I think the A5 x2 would be best for me when it comes out. I have hand-written pages in multiple locations (desk, filing cabinet, underwear drawer). Finding specific ones can sometimes be a chore.

Well played, thanks for the contribution.
Nomad is good just to small for real note taking and they need to really fix the calendar setup so it is more like boox on a go device
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. I think the notetaking is actually excellent. For me, it is an issue of size with PDFs. As for the calendar, I prefer the Supernote Calendar if it had writing on the daily view and the ability to link.
Thanks for this post, as I've been researching the Supernote and deciding whether to get a device. The nomad version might be a bit too small for me so I am curious about the release date of A5X2 in Australia. I am also assessing whether I should get A6X2 or wait for A5X2.
Why would they keep it quiet ? Asking question. Thank you for the video.
I almost think they are a little gun shy to get too ahead of it until production is up an running.
Because this device will not be as thin and lite as what has come out in the last few months, the boox go and the viwoods have given us a taste of what the next remarkable might be
I’m excited for Ratta, but a large part of the appeal of the A6X2 Nomad compared to my reMarkable 2 is the more convenient size. Time spent using the Nomad may change that, but for now I’m quite happy where I am…
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. Personally, I think the user interface and tools are more developed on the Supernote, that is why I chose it.
@@Change-1820 I’ve had my reMarkable 2 since the second round of shipping on the KickStart campaign. It was pretty much the only game in town at that point in time..!
I am waiting for the A5X2, it will be my 1st Supernote device. I hope the Polish language will be supported by recognition in near future. Thank you for the update.
