Supernote Tagging: Building Your Own Style (Excerpt)
I think what would solve the input box problem would be to do what the Newton did back in the day. Just give the users the option to pick "translate" after their done with a complete thought or have filled up the space in the box. This would allow you to write at your own pace and still have the functionality of having handwriting in a Word Doc. Lemme know what you think.
@@rantsabouttechnology you are a Newton fan boy (perhaps more than me with Supernote) ... Lol. I'm kind of torn on this. Part of me likes not having to worry about it and having the auto entry. On the flip side, it is ridiculously frustrating when it cuts me off while I'm writing.
Thanks for the comment. Let's get in touch. Feel free to send me an email. Where did you teach?
Hi Ed, I was a professor of education for over 25 years and a school psychologist with expertise in assistive technology. I have been working with students and teachers on the application of various technologies in the classroom. I have been posting a lot on LinkedIn on Google NotebookLM and working with teachers to show them how to use these AI tools in the classroom. I would enjoy the opportunity to chat with you and share with you how I use AI tools in my work and the work I do with students with disabilities.
Even though you can change the speed it recognises text, as a slow writer theres a sense of background anxiety driving me on when I might wont a moment to consider something... thus I'd prefer the option of a button in the toolbar to recognise what I have written.
I can completely understand this. The time extension does help.
Progress is good! I still use the Obsidian app on my phone for typing. Just far more convenient, but I’d love to eventually be able to do this on my Nomad. Especially if they integrate with Obsidian!
Yeah, Obsidian is hard because of the local storage and Markdown takes some getting used to. I like the Supernote plugin for Obsidian though for my handwritten notes. Supernote could allow you to create a text or Word Document. I also think it would be cool to be able to type directly in a not like what reMarkable does. Thanks for the comment.
I have the A6X which works great like this too but Supernote not having a durable nice form factor folio keyboard keeps me from doing it. (It's a bit small for that but I would grab the A5X if they had one)I have an old 2015 MacBook 12" that I've now loaded with Ubuntu and I do my heavy writing in there making Supernote just my note jotter. I don't know that I've seen any of the e ink tablets add one though. I've been tempted to try Freewrite Traveler for my purposes on this but can't ever get myself to accept it's price tag.
@@figofnewtons Yeah I looked into Freewrite but the price is insane. A keyboard folio would be excellent on a SuperNote if they can iron out all the kinks for the typing experience. Until then, bringing a bluetooth keyboard and typing on my phone is pretty convenient.
@figofnewtons I agree that a keyboard that uses the pogo pins would be ideal. Freewrite seems like too much friction to me, but that could be perception.

Thank you. How good is the hand writing recognition for cursive writing ? The demonstrations I have seen of hand writing recognition use handwriting with each character seperate from previous character. Most of my handwriting is cursive. It would slow me down if I had to start writing each character separately. Cheers from down under.
Bruce, this is a good question. I deliberately printed to make sure things were readable. However, I can tell you that I tend to write naturally in a hybrid style but it also keeps up if I do full on cursive. Of course, it isn't perfect.
I did not even realize you could hand write on the word document or even in the keyboard mode as I never tried it. I've tested using virtual keyboard from my computer and it was super funky. Basically if I want to type I will absolutely use my computer to type. I mostly use my SN with the notes app and many times I'll hand write a part of the book I’m writing. Then I will literally type it up again and when I do that I will add more to the story that I couldn't write fast enough as I absolutely type faster than I can write. But seeing this I might just use the word doc to write it up next time. I'll see how that feels. Shoot I just realized I forgot how I got it to use the keyboard form my Mac. LOL. Ah well I will figure it out and try I again and see. THANKS!
I would never discourage you to try a new workflow, but Word does still have some bugs. However, you mentioned writing by hand and then retyping. Have you used the handwriting recognition note and then exported that directly to Word. It could cut down on some duplication at least. Thanks for the comment.
It looks nice, but I think Word on Supernote lacks some functionalities such as copy-paste, as you mention, but also recognition of non-US layout (mine is customed French). So I'll stick to recognition of text in a note. I never tried editing Word docs, which could be interesting.
Thanks for the comment. I agree that they have a way to go, but it's much better than before and I found myself enjoying just typing, which surprised me. I would definitely like to see how those with different languages could use it. If you try it out, please share that experience. Thanks again!
Interesting workflow.
@@DarkroomZombiethanks for the comment. There is definitely a way to go but as I was creating the content, I was really enjoying the typing experience. If they can figure out multiple inputs, you could use the stylus to strike through as well or use the writing gestures. It will be interesting to see how this works in the future. Thanks again for engaging.

Wonderfull trick, Thank
It has a ton of potential.
How do you uninstall the older version of the apk and replace with newer version of the apk?
@@melancholiax3 thanks for the comment and question. Uninstalling is easy. Just go to the "my apps" page and click the arrow to the right to see the app details. Uninstall should be an option. Then you will just have to sideload the new apk. I don't know what would happen if you just installed the new one without Uninstalling the old one. Thanks again.
A pleasant and interesting conversation. Thank you.
@@paolobellucci-g9n thanks for the comment and compliment.
You said you were surprised that Ratta were doing the update before the release of the A5X2. Do you not think that they may be releasing the software update as part of getting ready to launch? For example, release the software update, make sure that all goes well and remedy what doesn't, load the updated software onto the new devices, release.
That is one thought but I don't know for sure. I also think they will release with something new for it as well. What are your thoughts?
I wonder why the bugs you found so quickly were not identified in the Beta testing program. It does not inspire confidence in their software testing program when they release a software update and then suspend it. I have been waiting on the release of the A5X2 ( which I call the NoteMaster ), but I will look at the A4 device that Boox have promised to release soon. I understand it will come with a software update as well. That could be promising.
@@bruceclovis this was not pushed to a beta first, and it could have been a few things. It was working as intended before I started the stream. Usually, I would have done more extensive testing before talking about it but I was excited. I actually think suspending the update was the right thing to do in response to community requests. I am intrigued by the Note Max but feel the A4X2 (hopefully to be released next year) will be the best of all worlds for me.
Hi Ed. I would prefer the A4X2 this year but I can’t see that happening, maybe it will happen in 2025 but it meanwhile it looks like Boox Note Max will happen this year with an operating system upgrade. That may really hurt Ratta. I sort of feel that Ratta is moving away from its declared central philosophy of being a device ‘for those who write’ by adding tools that don’t aid writing. EG Adding a nice drawing tool ( Atelier ) is good for those who want to draw. And a tool for doing To-Do lists and a good Calendar tool is also good for those who want them but they are not help me write. A dictionary, a grammar checker, some AI text drafting apps are all aids to me as a person looking for a device to help me write. I may be able to side load apps to do this but it’s not Ratta helping me write. If Ratta has decided to be more than a tool ‘for those who write’, say so. Okay, my Rant is over.
@bruceclovis thanks for sharing, and rants are fine. I am not expecting the A4X2 this year but do believe Supernote has a better toolkit for writing still. Adding Atelier in my opinion doesn’t hurt the writing experience, but add the ability of those who want to draw quality images (not this guy) into notes and documents to hopefully be able to do so. I feel the same way about Word integration, I am not as big of a fan, but they are the only ones to natively support a Word documents. At the heart of it all though is a superior notetaking experience and I feel Todos, keywords, titles, star marks, and headings all add to that. Personally, I have no use for AI in a writing app, I can use it either as a supplement or in post. As always, appreciate the back and forth.
Ed appreciate the demos you did with your Supernote.
Thanks, it was a little rocky but not too bad for no real prep. 🤪
The A5X2 is always on the horizon 🤪 just ask Rod.
This will go down as an epic Supernote battle.. Lol
Not being a professional (anymore) nor having another use case for the A5X2 (mostly), I have now owned the Nomad for nearly 7 weeks. I held off buying into Supernote until I could see what the A5X2 would potentially offer. But after seeing the preview of the A5X2 and seeing that it didn’t offer much, to me, over the Nomad other than size, my decision to go with the Nomad was almost immediate from there. I was even hoping the A5X2 would be released during the 30 day window just in case. But that didn’t pan out, obviously. Would I like to try the larger size? Sure! But I know myself that I would likely use an A5X2 primarily at home which would defeat my purpose of buying into an e-ink notepad in the first place. I will definitely be looking out for the A5X2 when it is finally released and will watch with some enthusiasm the ensuing YT reviews from all you folks. But unless it is a significant game changer over the Nomad that outweighs the somewhat reduced portability, I’ll be sticking with the Nomad. Just my 2¢.
Thank you for your comment and sharing your perspective. I think you hit the nail on the head. If you don't need the extra space, the Nomad is a phenomenal device.
Ed mentioned that Boox is still waiting to see what they will be when they grow up. Haha. I think that plays on both sides of the fence. There are a lot of users that need to figure that out for themselves as well. It would go a long way if users could decide in advance for what purpose they would need a device and then purchase a unit that most closely fulfills that criteria. It can be difficult….I get it. Sometimes you have to experience the actual device and all of its declared promises to see if it actually meets your expectations. This is why I’m sticking with my Supernote A5x. It just works for me. More technology or improved design do not always equate to better or more efficient productivity.
💯 Agree! Thanks for the comment.
I think Ratta may be in financial difficulty. Firstly they mention "we are not in financial difficulty" and secondly they don't have pre-sales. Another possibility is that they are being bought out or have new investors and are having to wait until the money is secure.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. This is a possibility, but I am not sure it is a strong one (at least in my opinion). I take them at their word that there was a lot going on, moving pieces everywhere, and a shifting landscape. If they do not follow through on the A5X2, I would be more inclined to agree with you. However, I believe they still have time to recover and really impact the market with this device. Thanks again for the comment.
cant believe im getting convinced to buy this right now... does it sync with outlook???
Thanks for the comment and question, it is a great device. The answer to your question is yes and no. You can sync Outlook email and the calendar. Outlook tasks does not currently sync. However, that is on the roadmap. If you absolutely need that functionality though, I wouldn't buy anything based on future functionality. Just my two cents, but I love the way the systems work together. Thanks again for engaging.
This is bizarre. He asked why would somebody buy a good device and then proceed to systematically disable distractions like notifications. I think we have just witnessed some strange mentality here, and I mean that in the most polite way possible. Firstly, the whole thing about "distraction free" is a falsehood. We have a kind of false dichotomy happening in the world of e-readers involving usability features and the idea of focus or distraction free. Sometimes it seems like the Remarkable devices obsession with focus is a coping mechanism for the absurd lack of features people want like, for example , being able to exchange ones' own documents to themselves over cloud storage or with colleagues. Then to say the "writing feel" has any impact on evaluating the previous idea is truely false equivalent, because any tablet can (eventually) implement those hardware featu5, not that they have anny bearing on focusing. I suspect what happens here is folks with a tendency to be distracted have a kind of mental dissonance when it comes to people who are able to focus with a so-called distracting device. Anybody can disable distracting features, but no everyone can be resilient to ignore distractions. And I'm conclusion I totally get why some people might really imperatively require a device where they cannot enable distractions. The mind boggles!
As with any comment, I appreciate you sharing your perspective, and it definitely isn't the first time I have been called strange. However, to address your points, when I asked why someone would buy a Boox device if they did not specifically need or want all of the things that full Android has to offer (most of which are poorly implemented on e-ink devices), I was stressing that they should buy the device that fits them. I would definitely disagree with you that "distraction free" is a real thing and not false by any means. To think that only those who have some kind of disorder can be distracted by notifications or even just too many shiny things (games, apps, etc.) are impacted by our overreliance in some cases on technology is taking way to narrow a view of humanity. If you watch my channel, you see that I feel Remarkable is way too limited, but only for my needs. For some others, it fits them perfectly. The same case could be made for Quaderno. My favorite, and probably most frustrating part of your criticism here is that anyone can do this from a hardware perspective. If they can, why don't they? There is a cognitive link between memory, learning, and the act of physically writing. There are paper-like screen protectors, but most people just don't like those as well. Again, I am speaking from my own experience and was giving my recommendations. You don't have to agree, but minimizing the viewpoints of others and acting as if yours is the only "right way" is just not realistic. Thanks again for engaging.
Since I added the SD Card , when I sync to cloud Nomad only sync 97%- why?
@@user-dn9oe2kl5c I would suggest sending the logs to Supernote. There shouldn't be an issue. Just FYI that the SD card will not sync.
Great video! I did have a couple of questions that came to mind while I was watching: 1. Can you create subtasks of tasks in the to-do list view? 2. Can you cross off the days (or otherwise write) on the calendar? Or does it only contain the digitally added events? Thank you!
@@michaellynch9405 Thanks for the compliment and questions. Unfortunately, you cannot create sub tasks currently. However if you wanted, you could create a task page and treat the heading as an overall task, then use the task template for sub tasks, or even a different task on each page of a notebook. You can write. On the calendar monthly and weekly views, but not currently the daily view. Ratta does have that on the roadmap though. Thanks again for the comment.

I’m looking forward to having you try out our new planner. It’s a lot better. We should have it ready in about two weeks. Anxious to see your thoughts.
@@morningcoach thanks, I am curious too. It's no much the planners as it is that I want the functionally of a note that just doesn't work in the PDF. I will definitely try yours out though, appreciate you making it available.
The Supernote Nomad is a wonderful, incredibly reliable device that I personally use daily. It's just too bad that the Ratta engineers have been so late in releasing the larger A5X2. Many otherwise loyal users have jumped ship and have gone over to Boox, among others because of the endless delays.
No color e-ink? With the Supernote devices, how do you manage without color e-ink to highlight words, to shade, or to make time blocks? Any e-stickers? For e-planners and note-taking.
@@thestudentat101 thanks for the comments and questions. I don't tend to highlight and shade for notes, although there are greyscale options. PDFs show as hello outside of the Supernote.
@Change-1820 Ok, thanks. I've heard of the gray scale options. I guess that could work. Hmm, PDFs show as hello...? I'm familiar with PDF, but I don't understand that part; the hello part.
@thestudentat101 sorry, yellow, typo.
@Change-1820 🙂Ok. Got it.
A missing workflow feature that just seems so obvious to me as someone who’s work day is many back to back meetings that are in my calendar (Yes I know you aren’t Supernote, but I just wanted to vent or get decent idea for a workaround): Why can’t I go to the meeting in the calendar and QUICKLY create a new note based on a template that follows a name that’s easily associated with the meeting itself? Would be so much easier and less friction having to set this up. Instead, now I just have one MONOLITHIC note that just has hand written titles for each meeting.
No worries, vent away. I have wanted this for a while. I don't do the monolithic note though. Instead, I Create the note with the meeting name and date wherever I want it to live in my files on the morning or the meeting. It's a little prep work that takes some of the friction away. Thanks for the comment.
How do you get a new page? I have atelier but can only draw on same page over and over. Or how do i create a new atelier document?
@@JimSmith001 Thanks for the comment and question. My understanding is that you have to do them as individual documents for now, but believe they will have some new updates when the A5X2 comes out. Vladimir Kostek and Kit Betts-Masters have done more with that tool than I have.
This looks a great feature, I must start using the calendar!
Thanks for the comment. I really enjoy the calendar.
I have an A5x and a Boox Note Air 4c. I prefer the 4c but this is one of the areas that Supernote wins outright. It's great to be able to capture tasks whilst in a meeting, giving you the confidence that nothing is going to be missed
Yeah, this is a huge win for Supernote. I never thought I would use their app because I use Google Tasks but it is just so handy.
Looks good, the only thing that I'd need to resolve is when I make a 'New Note' for a meeting, where I would store it and in what structure. Often, you just need a _'disposable note',_ something that will be irrelevant once the meeting is finished and as most, I fear clutter. I have a very good structure for study, it took a while to get there but I got there in the end... however, when it comes to controlling certain projects I'm all over the place and if there is one thing that annoys me its not being able to locate documents and papers fast, so when it comes to projects, I'm just not there yet. Thanks for the video, it has given me plenty to ponder.
For me it depends on if you want to access your notes by date or by project/meeting. If it's by date it's easy as you can just use the calendar. I prefer to do it by project/meeting so I have a work folder with sub folders 'work' and 'projects' within those folders I have a singe note for each project or meeting. within these notes I make the date a title - allowing you to do a global search on the date if required. Work and project subfolders have a folder within them - 'supporting documents'. Here I store any images, pdf's, excel files etc. I can then crate a link to the relevant file(s) from within the relevant note. You can then create a link to the 'work' folder on the quick access menu. Makes it easy, one swipe down for the quick access menu, selects the work folder and then find the note that you want
@@nbamford03 Appreciated, I'll see if I can incorporate it on one of my projects.
Thanks for the comment. I have some more in depth videos on this. If they are in the moment notes, I just try to create them in the root and discipline myself to rename and move them. If I know I will want to reference them later, I take the time to create them in the file structure. More important for me is real time recognition so I can search and using Headings for if I combine small notes later.
This is a great workflow. I try my best to do both. For me, I can usually find the time to navigate to where I need a note to be and create the shell early the same day as project meetings. Once I do that, everything is easily accessible through the calendar or file structure.
I would love to have joined you live but I am in the UK, so it wasn't streamed until 3am which is too late for me to stay up. I would happily stay up till after midnight to finish watching though. I am not great at working out time differences but I think in Europe we were about 6 hours behind you? Would you please consider doing your live sessions on a Sunday mid-afternoon your time so your Europe-based buddies could join you please? I have now caught up on the session and it was an interesting conversation covering some varied points. Iinitially, I was disappointed in the continued delay in Ratta releasing the Supernote A5X2 but it has probably done me a favour in making me think carefully about my needs. I realised that I need a small device for making quick notes and planning but a larger device than A5 for making my study notes. So, I purchased a Supernote A6X2 for planning which I love and a Remarkable Paper Pro for my study notes which I also love (despite the rather limited software). Had Boox released a colour device of the same screen size as the RMPP, I would have chosen that as I do like the way you can have a handwriting notebook linked to a book PDF and use split screen to work on both. The remarkable doesn't yet have split screen but their file/folder organisation is good as you can make a folder to keep your notebooks with your study book PDFs.
Well one would hope that Ratta incorporates pinch to zoom in the future.
I agree, especially since it exists in Atelier.

I havre found that the planners with the hyperlinked sections are typically pretty big (lots of pages) and it slows down the opening of it, which is annoying, and also, for me, it defeats the other features of the Supernote. i.e. the document creation dates on the calendar, the easy to change templates, etc. I have tried using the planners that have so many sections and features, but it just feels more cumbersome to me, than helpful. Gonna try your method and see if it works for me.
Agreed, let me know if the process works for you. Thanks for the comment.
First😂
Thanks for the comment, not sure what it means but appreciate the engagement.
Great conversation! ❤
Thank you, we really enjoyed ourselves. There was great interaction in the chat as well.
@Change-1820 Got notifications on now so hope to catch you guys live next time
@@ishi92 Thank you, we may have to make a habit out of this @rantsabouttechnology?
Great to hear the chat. I had a shock a few days ago when i discovered that I only have 5Gb free on my A5X and to be honest, that doesn't seem right as it seems only a month or so ago that I had more free space than used. *Has there been any chatter out there regarding this issue?* I've looked, and I just can't see any files that could account for so much data being on my device. I'm wondering if I attach my A5X to my Mac via _OpenMTP_ or _Android File transfer_ If I can then use an app to find large files on it.
@@karlmunford7000 always good to hear from you. I have heard about file sizes getting large when you don't exit correctly, but that's the only thing I know about. I'd recommend reaching out to support with some screenshots, they may know what's going on.
