New Build: Crank Organ
First part in a series about building a crank organ that is MIDI compatible and has 28 pipes using scrap material. Building the frame, bellows, and crankshaft mechanism. Based largely on the organs of John Smith and Ronald Walters, I added 8 extra pipes for added range from the usual 20 and opted for developing my own solenoid valves to actuate the pipes. I also implement a miter gear design to change the crank location from in the back to on the side, making the cranking process easier for the user. Enjoy!

Bellows in this project were made from regular cardboard and cow leather. This video documents the leather splitting and glueing of the gussets on the bellows. Elmers glue was used to attach leather parts, which worked well for leather on cardboard, but very poorly with leather on leather. This resulted later in leakage on the corners of the bellows, which weakened playing ability. It seems tha...

    Very well done! Considering the quality of the materials used, you have produced a very nice little instrument. The Bach sounded great on it! When I saw you ripping up veneered chipboard I almost turned it off lol but you have made a silk purse from sows ears materials. As an ex organ builder there were some questionable practices but the proof of the pudding is in the playing. So once again well done !

    This truly is a huge accomplishment. I tried making one myself some years back, but I put the project on the back burner for several reasons - primarily to learn to make or buy some better reeds, and because I play accordion I've considered making a one-row cajun accordion instead. Anyways… The _ONLY_ thing I'd do differently (and what I did myself) is to buy some good steel wire like "spring steel" or strong steel wire - not heavier gauge, just stronger stuff - to make the springs. This will ensure the springs last for a long time, and rebound with the best action possible. Softer steel in paper clips will likely wear out over time, but I guess you'll find out. Other than that very small quibble, this is an _amazing_ build, and you did a really great job with this. It's easily one of the most impressive RUclips project videos I've seen in _years_ - and that's really saying something coming from a guy who watches so many. Give yourself a pat on the back!

    • @cas_creations
      @cas_creations 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your kind words and I'm glad you got a lot from the video; it's a big reason I make these. This first concertina was built fairly roughly and I've learned a lot since then. My more recent concertina I built reflects this and I improved many things such as using phosphor-bronze wire for the springs. Surprisingly, the paper clip springs have held up relatively well even after all this time though. I may make an improved 30 button anglo build video in the future.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 6 месяцев назад

      @@Oleg7212K It's not _really_ hard to make the box, buttons, etc. so you can easily copy whatever design you like best and just build it based on pictures - that's not the hardest part. The real difficulty comes with getting the action just right (when you press a button, you need it to work), and also making your own reeds and tuning them properly. Having plans wouldn't help you with either of these things. I hope that helps to motivate you to try it. I've gotten about 75% of the way with mine, and this guy's shown it can definitely be done! There's just not a lot of info about how to do it online; you have to really dig for it.

Also, when it's finished, you'll know how to repair or modify it since you built it and know every part of its inner workings. I've dreamed of making my own 1-row / 10-button diatonic accordion, which is a similar project with very similar construction. TLDR: _Mega-_ kudos to you for starting! Upload a video when you start making the other parts and show it off! 👏

      That was my number-one question. I've had a go at making my own (see my comment), and part of the reason why I put it on the back burner was because of the reeds. I just couldn't get the sound I wanted; I can tune free reeds with some level of proficiency - I wouldn't have a go at a big chromatic accordion but I can do harmonica and cajun accordion reeds - but actually _making_ reeds from scratch is a whole other mountain I've yet to climb. Even if he bought them, the result of his project is truly amazing. I've never seen anyone make an accordion or concertina in their home shop like this. It makes me want to have another go at mine.
