I'm taking my time - this is my slowest project, but it's coming together!
Yes, this wooden puppet has taken me over a year so far and it's STILL not finished, but that's ok. This project is one I am doing purely for my own learning and zoning out time. Just in case you're interested, here's where I'm up to so far :)
Note: as this puppet is based upon a design I learned on the course, I am not sharing in-depth info on the full build, as the copyright for the design belongs to Bernd Ogrodnik. This is simply footage of my carving stages and reflections on my own experience enjoying this process.

Hey there! With the wonders of editing, it can often seem like art is a speedy process - and while it absolutely can be, it most often is much slower. I am definitely a slow artist. Here I had a drawing practise session, using soft pastels which I haven't used an awful lot, and it took me about an hour. When your art goes wrong, it's ok to just stop and start again | Painting a Lion in gouache
Good Morning and thank you for showing us this fun craft. I got my pyrography pen with nibs from Eastleigh's The Works in Market Street and will have fun with it when my grandchildren are not around lol x Love your Mouse and thank you for making it so fun x Looking forward to getting started xx
Oh that’s lovely, I hope you have fun testing out your kit! Hehe, very wise to save it for grandkid-free time 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
Gosh, I bought a big slab of this the other day to make some wooden doll house mouldings and am wondering whether I should return the sealed packet and just get polymer clay instead. Thank you for the very frank review.
Ooh, doll houses are so interesting! Hmm, it’s a tricky one though… As I said in the video, I’m no expert, so perhaps there are ways to use it better than I did. But as doll house mouldings would be small - and I found small details hard to do with this clay - I’m thinking it might be a bit too crumble-prone and better suited to larger sculpture pieces 🤔 Polymer would definitely be easier to control, detail-wise.
Just in case it’s helpful, I just saw this video by Sarah at Red Rocking Bird - ruclips.net/video/0FiVA2KKkhU/видео.html - it goes into some of the properties of the clay and how it can be used in some more detailed ways, like with silicone moulds. She has a lot of clay knowledge so her examples could be helpful for your project if you do keep the wood clay 🙂
@@GemmaThePen Thank you Gemma, it's very different to other clays as you found out yes 🙂 got to work with it, I'll be doing more projects with it on my channel and I hope you will too. Thanks for the mention here 🙂 happy crafting
Can you put spacers in the “shoulder joint” to bring arms out and avoid shaving so much off legs and hand? Like between arm and body. Plus you could hide screws easier.
That’s a great idea, thankyou! 👏 Yes that could definitely work. I’m going to keep an eye out for some different screws too I think, to find some with smaller rounder heads, as they might be easier to nestle in.
@ very good idea!!! It just looks amazing so far. You can tell it is a labor of love!!!❤️ such an inspiration 😍
@jennyhignite4288 thanks so much! 💛 It is so nice seeing it coming together at last and it’s lovely to be able to share it here.
I bet if you put plastic wrap over the clay while you make the small lines, it wouldn't crumble like that
Thank you for sharing! When I use up the rest of the packet I am definitely going to try that 👏👍
I like all of these and absolutely love the paint tubes.
I'm so happy to hear that! I really enjoyed the paint tubes page - at some points I wasn't sure how it would end up but that's part of the fun 😄
Very nice.
Be careful switching the nibs while its hot. They can break off inside the tool basically ruining the tool.
That’s very helpful advice, thank you for sharing! 👏
Why is the audio only on the left channel?
I hadn’t realised it was 😅 Audio is something I try my best with but sometimes make errors with as I’m learning. Thanks for watching anyway!
@@GemmaThePen Other than that i think you did a good job and were fun to watch> Keep it up!
Music distracting video great
Thanks for watching! 💛
I have started pyrography recently and I prefer the use of a tool with wire nibs. You get to control the heat temp which higher heats (although more Smokey) it is easier to do those darker lines more smoothly and o feel I have more control. I love this piece you made ☺️
Ooh this is so helpful to hear, thank you! I would love to try more with pyrography in future, and having a bit more control over the temperature and lines would be great. I will look into them! 💛
I do love your whims! 😁😍
Haha, our whim-train is a good’un! 💛
Thank you for some great ideas!
Thanks for being here! I hope you have fun trying them out👏✨
Wow is very beautiful. Love your description.
It was such a calming place, I loved it 😌
@GemmaThePen well thanks to you I get to see a snippet of it. X
It’s so lovely to be able to share these things 💛 I’m so happy you enjoyed it ✨
Love your narratives. You’re funny!
Hehe, thank you! Glad it brought a giggle ☺️
This is very nice, I love the hot colours in the middle section. The finished piece looks 3-D
Thanks! I really enjoyed how vibrant these pastels were on the page 🤩
Hello. I like your videos but there is something many people do not understand. I am a professional musician, we are trained to focus on music and it becomes ingrained, Musicians sitting in pubs and bars with background music, (often intrusively loud) have a great deal of trouble screening it out. We tend to find conversation with people in these situation almost impossible. It can also trigger headaches, as one fights to separate words, from the airport lounge music. All we hear is an annoying twinkle and tweet of the muzak and it isn't stuff you want to listen to! For some reason, #RUclipsrs seem to think it's great to try and be heard over this stuff. I'm so sorry to say that it was distracting me so much, that I was unable to listen to what you were saying, (the important part). I had to stop watching.
I understand, thanks for sharing - I'm sorry to hear the music was distracting for you. I am learning video-making as I go, and as this video was one of my earliest (made 3 years ago), I'd like to think I'm listening to feedback and improving in my newer videos. These days I tend to use music more as interludes between talking sections, and trying to learn more about getting the audio levels right. One day I'll get the balance right 🙂 Thanks for stopping by regardless!
@@GemmaThePen Thank you, I hope I didn't offend you.
No offence taken at all - helpful feedback is always appreciated! 🙂
I love this❤ Thanks for sharing 🥰
Ahh thank you! I'm so happy you enjoyed it 💛
Oh wow they’re so cool! I have some floristry wire somewhere, I’ll have to find it and have a go!
Yay! They would look super cute on your tree 🎄💛
Dang dude that turned out awesome!
Thanks so much! 💛
Adorable. 😍
Thankyou! It was such a cute kit 💛
very helpful. especially about rough looking edges. i like that.
I’m so happy it was helpful! It’s such a lovely process to explore. Thanks for watching! 💛
Love this, the painting ended up so graphic with the straight lines from the cardboard edge. In your other cardboard video you mentioned Portrait Artist of the Year, I could totally see you doing something like this in Landscape Artist of the Year!!
It’s so cool how just using a particular tool can help to explore certain styles! 😍 Ah, that’s so kind - I love watching both those shows, the artists who take part are always inspiring, and always teach me something new 💛
Love the format - I’m feeling very zen now! Gorgeous picture too 😍
That’s lovely to hear - bring on the chill vibes! 💛
Not interested in wood clay at all but you’re hilarious! Loved this! 😂
Hehe, I’m so glad it brought some giggles! Thanks for taking a punt on it, despite the wood clay 😄💛
Aww they’re adorable 🥰
They say thankyou ☺️👻
It’s the black will be white and white will be black that gets to me. I once started carving a linotype and half way through I started carving the wrong bits.
Linocut is a doozy for that! I always have to colour in the block to make sure I remember which bits are which 😂
Thanks to your video, I made a mushroom with it, a fat portabello, not a delicate mushroom. I used aluminum foil inside. I liked the texture for that. Maybe use as walls of a house. I think I would attach to cardboard to strengthen it.
I am just picturing it, it sounds brilliant! A chunky mushroom is an inspired idea 🍄🟫👏 When I use up the second half of my pack I’m definitely going to use an armature inside and pick a more rustic subject 😄
I have never heard of Das wood clay! Fascinating!
It’s definitely funny stuff! I spotted a “Stone” version the other day too - who knew there were so many varieties! ☺️
Love your enthusiasm! So much better to listen to than some of the more 'intense' artists. Nice and clear instructions without a load of unnecessary waffle at the beginning 🤗 Thank you
Thanks so much, I’m so happy the video was helpful! 💛
These little ghosties are simple to make and the video is lovely to watch and funny too ‘booooo’t’. Thank you.
Oh I love a spooky pun! 👏☺️ I’m so happy you enjoyed the video!
Very cool!
Thanks! 💛
Wow, I have learned so much from you today!
I’m so happy to hear that! 💛 Thanks so much for watching!
This is one of the most inspiring things I've seen in ages, Gemma. Thank you so much! I think I'm going to run and try to make a version of the aurora that everyone (except me) saw this week!
Yay, That’s wonderful to hear - have fun with it! 👏✨ I missed the aurora lights too, I was so miffed, I would have loved to have seen them!
Great ideas - I particularly like the leaves 😊
Thankyou! Well, that makes sense ☺️🍂💛
Mouse termite hybrid. Or make a polymer clay mouse. I’m working with it too and hate those fibrous bits
Hehe, mouse-termite is right! 😂 I’ve recently bought some polymer to have a go with actually, so I’ll see how I get on. Ah I hope your wood clay project goes well - I hope those fibres don’t get too annoying! ☺️
What funny stuff!
Proper odd! 😂
Oh no, they don't ship to the US.
Oh I’m sorry to hear that!
Wow - what a beautiful way to swatch!
Thanks! I enjoyed myself for sure 💛
Cannot tell you how enjoyable it is to listen to your narration of this process. The giggles at the long twirl during carving! The delight in the process! Your love of lino is contagious in a gentle, welcoming fashion. Thank you for sharing
That’s so kind of you, thank you! 💛 It’s hard to hold back the joy of creating a long lino noodle ☺️ Thanks so much for watching.
i’m so happy i randomly stumbled across your channel!! your final sculpture is so cute! i’m interested as to the texture of the clay once it’s dry. does it feel similar to wood at all?
Yay! Thanks so much for being here! 💛 Hmm, it’s funny - I’d say a bit Yes and a bit No ☺️ It maintained its roughness before sanding, and so it did feel a little like a rough-cut wood surface. But on sanding, although it smoothed out a bit, I couldn’t get it to be as smooth as a piece of sanded wood could be. (I could probably have sanded for longer though!) It’s definitely an intriguing kind of clay to try! 😄
I wonder if the clay would be less crumbly by using plastic wrap on top of it when you make textures. It definitely doesn’t look like an easy clay to work with. But you made a beautiful sculpture!
Ooh thank you, that’s such an interesting tip, I wouldn’t have thought of trying that! I am logging that in my brain for next time 👏 it’s definitely the oddest clay I’ve tried 😅
Where do you buy this?😭
I’m in the UK and I got it from Hobbycraft, but I’ve since seen it on Amazon and art stores like Cass Art 😄
Lovely painting and another good art ponder. I just use colours I'm drawn to which are usually quite muted earthy ones. Colour theory is very interesting and I think I'm definitely more drawn to warmer colours but I don't really think about it much more than that when I'm creating.
Thanks, Emma! I think we definitely all have colours that call to us more - and they can’t help but become part of our art in some way. And when we don’t know what our art style is, pinpointing which colours make us happy or interested is a good starting block. Ooh earthy tones are so lovely to use, I can see why you’re drawn to them! 🤩
Cool! 😊
Thank you, Gemma!
Aw, thanks for being here!
Remember me when ur famous-fr tho u have some seriously good potential ❤ keep it up
😍 Beautiful 😊
Thanks me ducks! 💛
Stunning - You captured the beauty of Hyde Hall perfectly!
Ahh, phew! 🥳👏💛
Love it!
OMG the way you talk is delightful! Nice job on the magpie!
Aw, that’s lovely of you to say 💛 thanks so much!
