Past Tesla Wall Connector Installation with PVC Conduit #evchargers
I'm not even an electrician, but I would have disconnected the meter from breaker panel and ran new wire and conduit to the supply side of the generator switch. Then ran new wire from switched side to breaker through conduit they used between switch and breaker panel. Of course the power company would have to get involved because of opening meter box. Probably why they did it this way (to cheap or lazy to call power company. Whether it's code or not, really stupid to run the supply wire with the switched wire in same conduit. If those wires short you could be feeding power back to the power company during a power outage. Could potentially get a lineman killed.
Mike and you’re saying you’re not even an electrician. Scary there are some here that can even understand that that are electricians. 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment ! 👍
This installation wasn't sanctioned or permitted. The transfer switch is service rated, so the conductors coming from the service entrance are unfused like a normal service entrance. He didn't comment on the generator input into the transfer switch. I like for inspectors to provide code references for the violations noted. I don't want to hear your opinion.
Wow, but I’m glad to hear yours. ☝️
I'll get back to you... I've got work tomorrow! 😊
👍
Seems to me that the generator transfer switch was put in after
Absolutely was Jack. Then after that, we (Tesla) came to add solar. That’s when I noticed this crappy install. 👍
General is that way and their generators are soon junk
I have had a Generac standby generator and I liked it. Never had any issues and it always worked when I needed it. I certainly don't have any issues with them. Only issue is with lazy or unprofessional installers. Personally I would like to have solar and battery backup. Just so many reasons to switch. Thank you for watching and commenting. 👍
No plastic bushings
Great Eye Josh. I didn't even notice that one. 😎😎
Ok was this inspected??? in my jurisdiction, the electrical contractor would’ve gotten raked over the coals for this installation upon inspection!
Exactly! You see fellas from the mouth of an actual Inspector. These types of installs are not acceptable. Most of us are professionals in the trade, but some are not. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on this video . 👍💯
Did you consider using the wafer style lights just to make the install a little easier?
Hey Glen, I did not. I got my hands on these Lumary lights and wanted to install them and make a video. That video is coming. I’m sure the wafer would’ve been much easier, but for the sake of making a video this served its purpose . As you know, not easy to make a hole just a little bit bigger. Not having that pilot Joe in the middle to hold the drill steady makes it really difficult. Thank you for taking the time to comment .
@@YourFloridaElectrician Yeah, making the hole a little bigger is tough. It's always the little details that make every job a challenge. Thanks for the video.
@GlenMacNeil thank you for watching and commenting Glen. 👍🫶
That’s what cheap price means S__T
I don’t know what the customer paid, but yeah. 💩
Also noticed that the wires coming from the meter are tapped and going to the cabinet to the right of the ATS.
Yes, that would be a blindside tap for the Tesla solar system that was installed
Would a 40amp contractor in a metal box on the heater with a 115v coil wired to a smart outlet get the job done safely and to code? Just asking. What am I missing?
Sure. A 40 amp Contactor in a metal enclosure with a whip to a smart outlet will work. I was thinking of doing the same thing. I'm currently using Leviton smart swithes / outlets and wanted to get away from the timer and use the easy settings from Leviton to control the water heater. Great minds think alike Walter!
Looks horrible
I agree. ☝️ Is why I thought it should be recorded. Glad I did.
The generac had a disconnect / breaker, said 200 amp its roght there
Yes it does. Not an issue at all with that. Running unfused cables through one panel, into a conduit, then coming back through same conduit with fused conductors is part of the issue. Also, not separating grounds and neutrals after making the Generac panel the 1st means of disconnect. I think the Generac is service rated also which is a plus. Thanks for watching and Commenting.
I'm a licensed electrician and this is 100% fine and correct, ya'll are trippin
Yep, I’m a master electrician and according to the code it isn’t. Also, this has the grounds of neutrals connected after the first means of disconnect. Many things wrong with this install. (I still might be trippin' ya never know)
230 B. Other Conductors in Raceway or Cable. Conductors other than service conductors shall not be installed in the same service raceway or service cable in which the service conductors are installed
Luckily its not a raceway. Its a walking lane.@@YourFloridaElectrician
@Electrimusprime 😀
NEC 230.7 Conductors other than service conductors shall not be installed in the same service raceway or service cable in which the service conductors are installed.
that's bogus, no OCPD needed if less than 10' after meter, no rules about sharing conduit either, you're making up problems that dont exist. Clean install
Well, not making it up. Also worked for Tesla for 5 1/2 years and they wouldn’t share any conduit either right off the meter. If we did, the AHJ would fail it. Maybe some AHJs would pass it if they didn’t know what they are doing. I don’t put videos here making things up. Just curious. What is the code reference that says you don’t need OCPD if less than 10’ after the meter. Look at the comments and read the code . Anyway, appreciate your commenting .
230 B. Other Conductors in Raceway or Cable. Conductors other than service conductors shall not be installed in the same service raceway or service cable in which the service conductors are installed
15' inside the building is the MAX distance from meter to 1st disconnect in Canada. You can go forever outside though.
@robanderson3624 thank you for sharing that. Some houses here believe it or not have only a meter outside. Then the unfused service conductor goes all the way into the garage which I thought was insane! Imagine screwing into the wall and hitting that service conductor when you’re hanging a picture!
Were do the wires that are tapped on the top of the transfer switch go? It looks like they feed another breaker to the right. They should be tapped from the load side of the tranfer main not the line side. Now they are subject to overload. So many code violations
Yes, that would be the line side! Scary, right.
Not to mention those pesky splices in the main service panel.🙄
From pulling them off the MSP. Too short now.
Yikes
I know right!
That's why the electric company's smart to put a fuse at the transformer for idiots like this. No it's not to protect the structure it's to protect their stuff.
Tons of messages would agree this install is wrong. But you have the occasional person that probably did this type of install. Maybe in some countries it would be safe but not here.
It is FLA USA. Anything goes!
🤷♂️
Including having the breaker box outdoors apparently. I can think of a bunch of reasons why that's a bad idea.
Yes. Not unusual to have it outside. Sometimes even all the breakers outside which is really brilliant. Especially if your breakers trip while it’s raining and you need to go to reset it. 🤦♂️
@@YourFloridaElectrician My biggest concern would be having it out where other people can access it. Down there in Florida, rain would be your big worry. Up here around Chicago, the breaker would probably trip at night with the box encased in ice in the middle of winter.
@HariSeldon913 Hari, I have come across a lot of “preppers” that hate having even the main breaker outside. I mean, If things going to be like the walking dead and groups of people going around looking to better their situations, having your main outside does not make it easily defendable. And yes, there are people preparing for WTSHTF. (When the shit hits the fan)
American League generac allows anyone with no certification to halfway install their crap. 😜
@user-zb5gd2ff8y yeah we both know that’s just wrong! Tesla had some certified installers and all they installed was junk . I’m gonna have to mention that on another video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
at lest ATS is SE related, i've seen one that was spliced before the meter
At least is correct. lol 🤷♂️
Yeah there's no way that was inspected. Sparky hack pulled the meter. Doesn't look like they separated the grounds and neutrals in that panel either. No longer first means of disconnect.
That’s right. You see that also in the full video. They didn’t separate the grounds and neutrals. Good way to put it Sparky hack! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment.
Where I live that would pass as long as the main power had a disconnect and that's the transferswitch
Are you in US? That’s interesting. Unfortunately, in this case, our upstream disconnect would be pulling the meter.
@@YourFloridaElectrician live in sc the power company's do that also
@wolf3five Here in Orlando they would have a fit. Even with the generator transfer switch being the first means a disconnect, makes it difficult to work on the first panel without having live wires running through it. It just doesn’t make safety sense. If there was a proper disconnect means right after the meter before entering any of the other panels, I could see where that would be OK . 👌
@YourFloridaElectrician but I'm with you do it nice and right and keep the next person safe if they have to do work
100% 💯 agree. There’s that saying it’s not my house but it’s somebody’s house. I always hated that phrase.. Thank you for engaging in the comments .
If the transfer switch was listed as suitable for servic equipment it could be installed correctly. Spliced service conductors replaced and run in seperate raceway. This is major hackery.
You’re not lying Jimmy. majority of this could easily be fixed. Even better if it’s done right the first time. Thank you for watching and commenting . 🙌
Florida man strikes again!
Could happen anywhere. Might as well happen here so I can see it and record it. 😺
I know nothing about home electrical, and just at face value, without knowing the regulations, that looks like a huge safety and fire hazard.
We “electricians” strive to follow the national electric code. This is a code book of minimum electrical standard. If installations follow theses minimum standards we should expect a safe electrical installation. You need not know theses codes but the professionals doing installations should. This is for your safety and help avoid property losses. This video is only one example of someone NOT following these minimum standards. Putting this home owner unknowingly at risk. This code book was written for people like yourself to protect you and your property from people like the one that did this install . Sometimes people still get around the system and are able to walk away with a POS install like this one and get away with it. Basically no pride in their work only in it for the money.
🤦♂️ wow, this makes my head hurt....i mean C'MON, COMMON SENSE PLEASE!?!?
As we know, common sense is not that common.? Thank you for watching and commenting . ✌🏻
How is it even allowed to have an unfused feed from the meter to the panel at all? in UK the feed to the panel is protected at the meter.
welcome to the usa where nothing makes any fucking sense.
Crazy right!? 😆
Nice to know you can blow yourself up real good if your messing with the load side of the meter right? Especially if there is no breaker if things go wrong.
It would help if you actually spelled it correctly: it's GENERAC, not "GERERAC." Pay attention to detail.
Dam. Your Right. Just found it. Not too bad if your the 1st to mention it in 20k views. Thanks for pointing it out for me. Don't think it can be fixed at this point but Thanks anyways. Wish I could blame Siri. 🤷♂️
The fix here (I'm not an electrician, but want to hear the fix, not just the problem) - Put an elbow to the right of the meter box, run wire from meter box directly to top of transfer box to feed it, then have the same wires that now run from transfer box still run the way they are. Of course, the wire from the meter box needs to be replaced, I don't think any kind of splicing is acceptable.
Right. A conduit either above or below the main service panel directly over to the transfer switch would make a good fix. And if you see the original video, they also need to separate grounds of neutrals now in the main service panel because it’s not the first means of disconnect anymore . You can only have your ground neutral bonded in one place and that would be at your first means . 👍 Thank you for commenting . 🙌
Thank y'all for the good Information.
Who says you cant have the service and feeder conductors in the same conduit?
@phillipkirby502 Good stuff Phil
@coreyfranco7060 This NEC code reference. 230 B. Other Conductors in Raceway or Cable. Conductors other than service conductors shall not be installed in the same service raceway or service cable in which the service conductors are installed
Well, violation one is using the panel enclosure as a raceway. Meaning, running the feeders through the panel, instead of to it.
Absolutely! 👍 Thank you for watching and commenting ! 🫶
Code section feeder can pass through a panel as long as it doesn't over fill wire way. The enclosure is not a panel the breakers and bus are .
Interesting. Can you provide the NEC code?
@@YourFloridaElectrician I believe they are referring to NEC 2020 312.8(A). "The wiring space of enclosures for switches or overcurrent devices shall be permitted for conductors feeding through, spliced, or tapping off to other enclosures, switches, or overcurrent devices where all of the following conditions are met..."
@Kingkoopa00 Makes sense for fused conductors 👍. Thank you for sharing this. ✌🏻
He Re-FUSED to install it correctly.
TTMAR - take the money and run! 🏃
with all this talk, I'm CON-FUSED
@dantigar7318 haha con-fused
I don’t think the first means of disconnect should be inside the transfer switch 😂 no pride in this job just shame
If I’m not mistaken, the generator transfer switch needs to be upstream of the main service panel. In this way when the electric goes out and power, the MSP. The install certainly could have been better .
So, either this was permitted and the utility pulled the meter, and then it was inspected and APPROVED so the utility could reinstall the meter, which is disquieting, orrrrr.... the installer did the work with the the meter in, on energized circuits, which is even MORE disquieting. Either way, yeeeesh.
@@mrz80 Agreed! The homeowner was told they pulled a permit. I kind of doubt it.. Any inspectors I’ve ever dealt with would never allow the blind side in with the load side like that. And the grounds are neutrals to remain bonded after the first means of disconnect. but you’re right either way pretty scary! Thanks for watching and commenting!!
A lot of Florida people just do what they want.
Not sure if it’s Florida people specifically. I’ve seen a lot of great work, but there’s occasionally somebody that doesn’t care..
Except it takes 45 minutes for each charge instead of 30 seconds to fill with gas so, there's that
True, but it’s getting better. And typically only takes 10 to 15 minutes cause you don’t charge to 100%. Just enough to get to your next charger or your destination. For me it’s OK because I normally have to use the restroom or get a coffee anyways. Thanks for watching and commenting James.
@@YourFloridaElectrician that's a good point. If you can stop more often for shorter amounts of time and use that time as a bathroom/snack breaks for road trips, so it's probably not that bad. Just discovered the channel but it's great, keep up the good work!
@jamescarrico1233 thanks James appreciate the kind words. 🤙
It's easy to see why the easy way is often also the STUPID way.
Yes, sir. I try to think of it what would I do if it was my house? People in the trade have a tendency of saying “it’s not my house “. I’ve never liked that saying because it’s somebody’s house. And that somebody has a family and property. We should all strive to be professionals and not take shortcuts to get out of there early. Otherwise, We lose trust with our customers.
Is it easy to explain why you can't run fused and unfused? Is it a fire thing? Or interference of some sort??
NEC 230.7 States: Conductors in Raceway or Cable. Conductors other than service conductors shall not be installed in the same service raceway or service cable. So I would imagine keeping branch circuits and feeders out of the service raceway ensures that in the event of a fault condition, the unprotected service conductors do not energize feeders or branch circuits with current levels higher than they are rated to carry. I hope this helps.... This was not the only install error. Watch the full video. Click the link from the short. Thanks for watching and commenting.
What the installer should have done is install a second conduit for the load size conductors from the Generac generator panel back to the house panel. That would have fixed that problem. Even better to install a conduit for the line side to the Generac Transfer switch.🤷♂️
@@YourFloridaElectrician The installer probably knew better but wanted to take a shortcut to get to the next job, figuring no one would notice.
No one did. Not even the inspector, if there was one. But the jig is up now isn't it!
@@YourFloridaElectrician Does this apply to a trough also? Seen that plenty of times.
I used to run conduit and wires for generac solar
I know not all installers for Generac did installs like the one I featured. I think Generac has a high-quality product and excellent installers but there is always one taking shortcuts taking away from all the other great installs.
@YourFloridaElectrician it was a nightmare set up actually, we were given three different instructions to the same set up and half the time it didn't work and it was trouble shooting and testing for hours and then going back out when they eventually failed in a few months and running a few extra wires and replacing bad cells and motherboards in a couple systems to then need a new access and log in and set up code from the company because the new part in the controller equates to a "new system" but I did the best with what I was given and tried to make everything nice and neat and to code. I got told a few times to redo conduit because although it was code and neat they would rather it use less space and they didn't care if it was strapped correctly as much and thus didn't do box offsets (they cut them off when I did them even) and we have so many sites with the connector bent on the metal. That may be the company I worked for, but the generac systems aren't really my favorite company to deal with either.
@angelforgotten7325 well I was kind of in disbelief really. I was there to install a Tesla, solar and battery system. As you can tell from the line side taps inside the generator transfer switch. I felt worse for the homeowner because he had no idea. He has to trust the professionals coming out there that they are doing a good install for him. I hope you watch the full length video because there was more things wrong with it like not separating grounds . I appreciate you watching in commenting on the video ! Thank you 🙏
Not impressed with Defiant outside lights.especially with the instruction manual. I notice it looks like you had to shorten your mounting bracket also.
Hello Rudy, thank you for watching and commenting! I find a lot of instruction manuals are pretty lacking. I’m not sure who writes them, but they need to be fired. Hi, Will the Emporia fit on a 4 by 4 post? How far apart are the screws that hold he attachment bracket? Thanks
The Emporia documentation that I found online doesn’t show the spacing on the screw holes. Only shows that the bracket is about 6 inches wide. If you’re willing to off-center it a little bit I’m sure you can use the top hole and the middle hole and not the second top hole. of course it will be off-center and look kind of funny because the Emporia is a pretty wide charger. But that of course is up to you. Here’s a link to the Page I found: www.emporiaenergy.com/EV%20Charger%20Technical%20Specs.pdf
I like doing things myself but I have solar panels connected to my heater as well as electric. Im assuming that the Little Gray Box will still help conserve energy?
Yes, of course. The more and electrical device is turned off he more energy you’re gonna save weather it’s connected to solar or the grid.
Everything backwards. Always build your load side first. Finish in the breaker box. Don’t shove your wires into the breaker while you’re working on the connector. Do not copy this guy.
Weird my reply is not staying. Testing testing
Ryobi?
I know I know 🤷♂️. I’m a sucker for 200 tools that take one battery.
I know it’s no longer done in kitchens because of GFI protection, could you have run a 12/3 and done a shared neutral circuit? save wire box fill and time.
Yes, many times a 12-3 is pulled here for a disposal and dishwasher sharing the neutral. You have to make sure each breaker is on opposite phases otherwise you could overload the neutral. Yes, definitely can’t be a GFI .
