Sows Bred and Back Out to Pasture!

Sows are amazing creatures, it doesn't take many to produce a lot of piglets! We take the sows to the corral to be bred, then cut the boar out and let them gestate and give birth on pasture.

Sheep Really DIG Stockpiled Grass in the Winter
Просмотров 22028 дней назад
In the winter, many ranchers have to feed hay. Because we have a management intensive grazing program at Restoration Acres, we are able to "stockpile" grass, enabling us to not feed hay (unless the snow is so thick the animals can't dig through to the grass). Basically, allowing the grass to grow thick and tall in the fall, and letting the herbivores harvest it in the winter. The grass plant is...

All seem happy and healthy, already play fighting with their brothers and sisters. I'm glad the cold weather is over for now!
Farrowing in the Cold Part 2

All the sows farrowed during the cold snap, warming up tomorrow thankfully! Another momma built a good nest and didn't lose a single piglet during the 23 degree night!
What farrowing in cold with good pig genetics looks like!
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
Had two sows farrow early during the coldest couple of nights (of course) but this momma made the perfect nest with what she had available in the paddock. Selecting for good genetics takes patience but it's worth having hands off farrowing in a few years! Good momma!

Zwierzaki są mądre. Wiedzą że jedzonko „idzie”
What a beautiful farm, which country?
Appalachia of America. I watched some of your videos, looks like you live in extreme, harsh, but absolutely beautiful land yourself!
아름다운 자연 방목하는 행복한 돼지 나의 꿈
It's a lot of hard work, trial and error, and it forces you to be grounded with reality, but because of that it's one of the most rewarding ventures I've pursued in my life! Pursue your dream!
Clearly not the first time you have done that! That was impressive, nice looking pigs too.
Thank you 😂... ya behind this video is many failed attempts and embarrassing moments in the past 😅

Love the hogs , what stock of pigs you got ?
We have a mix of large breeds we've been line breeding for about 6 years now. They're a mix of large black, Berkshire, Hampshire, Duroc, Tamworth, Red Wattler, GOS, I think that covers it 😂. Been really happy with their genetic performance especially the last couple years.
Yes but you got be feeding them some grain or something it this weather nothing else for them eat now
😊
Wonder how they'd respond to getting herded by a dog?
The dog would have to be very well trained, pigs unlike sheep or cows would be more likely to be aggressive towards a dog. In my experience any agitation can cause an "explosion", so if the dog was really well trained and used the pigs flight zone instead of nipping at legs the whole time, it could work.
Wood love to see the Finished product, Yum 😋
Good work. It takes time, and it's coming together through persistence.
Happy New Year! Thanks so much for the great video and all the hard work put in to raising those happy animals. You live on some beautiful land!
The grass plant is able to keep a strong root system, so it stays green and alive through winter, even with snow, giving more nutrients to the animals than hay can provide. It's also less labor intensive for the farmer. As you can see towards the end of the video, there is life under the snow!
I enjoyed this so much. Pumping that gas tho 😂😂😂💪
😂😂😂
Great video. Thanks so much for sharing the farm life with us city slickers! Love to you and your wonderful family.

That is so cute and awesome
Amazing 🤩
I wish I could see how she went about making this.
It's the best nest I've ever seen, I don't know how she closed herself inside! 😂
Thats cool!
Hello from our farm in New Hampshire. What state are you in? When I processed Rock Cornish Cross, after 50 chickens, my hands could not take all that cutting up. Out of shear frustration and sore hands, I took the poultry shears and shipped along both sides of the back bone to divide the chicken in half, washed the halves in lemon juice and cold water. The I vacuumed sealed them and stacked in the freezer. The back bones were frozen for soup. That saved a huge amount of space VS a whole chicken, which is like attempting to stuff footballs in the freezer! If I wanted to roast a whole chicken, I took out two halves, placed stuffing on one half and clam shelled the two halves together, sewing up with kitchen twine and poultry needles. What a breeze to place a golden roasted " chicken" on a platter, remove the poultry needles and pull the string. The chicken came right apart. It was easy to scoop out the stuffing. If I wanted chicken pieces I could take out a half and just cut it up :-) Also pre washing those halves made for a fresh clean chicken. Keep up the good work! ~ Diane
Awesome to watch the piggies and how well they're taken care of.
It's awesome to know how it's done. You make it look eazy.
Very useful. Thanks!
This is wonderful Rachel! I have been cutting up chickens, but definitely needed this to help me improve. Tell us sometime the different ways to thaw the whole chicken.
They look so happy and healthy… and how rewarding is that, to sit there and enjoy it all with them…top marks!!!
It's nice to see the pigs enjoying what comes naturally.
Brilliant!
Very informative, thanks for taking the time and effort to give us this insight!
Where’d ya learn to drive? Down the valley?
