In 1942, Bellemont (outside of Flagstaff, Arizona) was chosen as a secure location for one of 16 ordnance depots. As historian John Westerlund explains, the depot soon exhausted the male workforce in Flagstaff, so the Captain decided to start recruiting Navajo and Hopi men to fill 8,000 positions.
