At first I thought that in the live version of fade to black there was like a chord progression (kind of edit with samples or something) from the end to give James and the team time to adjust things like the acoustic guitar, but now that Fortnite did something right in its existence I can realize that apparently it is a bass solo in the song and that Cliff did it about 40 years ago, and we are just now realizing it, it is incredible everything that Cliff offered and it is a shame that he left so young (RIP Legend)

The bass solo sounds suspiciously similar to the harmony in the middle section in Soldiers of the Wasteland by Dragonforce (around 5:06). Just listen to the song and you'll see the similarities yourselves

Probably the bass was supposed to be played on the end and since it sounds a lot like a guitar (a 4 string bass is tuned like the first 4 strings on a guitar, just an octave down. After the twelveth fret it way sound exactly like a guitar.), it got lost in the studio mix. I just came from revisiting a version of the entire Rtl album with the bass boosted (a pretty good mix tho ruclips.net/video/MArFeWrocEE/видео.htmlsi=tRNXDR9j9s2qQJn4) and I couldn't listen to it.

All those times listening to live Fade to Black with that bass intro always made me wonder why it’s playing. Now that this shows us that it was Cliff playing that intro all along just shows that Cliff has always with us since the beginning on the song. Even more appreciation to have for this song now, we miss you Cliff \m/

I immediately went to listen to the studio version of Fade to Black, and now I can suddenly hear the bass solo. Very buried in the mix, but it's there. I listened to Fade to Black for years and until now I didn't hear it at all. YOU ARE AMAZING, BROTHER.

David Ellefson and Rex Brown are seriously underrated.. to me at least, both great players.. Rex playing bass solos under Dime's guitar solos. And Ellefson does some hard stuff on the bass too, they both have their moments where they stand out in the mix when most basslines in songs (metal especially) are buried, it's cool.

So glad the fills from the original mix are included. I had this tabbed in an old Guitar Player magazine about thirty years back and while not exact - it’s much closer than the actual Metallica bass lines to their official tab. The muted first note on the triplet is a big revelation.

Cliff Burton was an absolute legendary bass player, an excellent songwriter and a superb showman, but his timing wasn't on par with Hetfield's rhythm guitar tracks (which is very evident in this particular track, especially during the verse riff) and I'm guessing that's one of the reasons the bass was always kinda low in the mix (although not even near as bad as Jason on AJFA, of course).

My forearm is sore just listening

For a guitar player like me this is really interesting. When I'll have formed a band I'll surely send this to the bassist (who I'm planning to give vocal duties as well)

at 0:48 he does a eighth note with 2 sixteenth notes into that 7 on the A string or am i hearing wrong
