How to pronounce the é sound in words like café and fiancé
Просмотров 824 года назад
Do you know what APPROXIMATION is? It happens when a language imports words from another. If a sound doesn't exist, it gets changed into the closest one possible, which means sometimes words get pronounced in a way that's slightly or even completely different from the original language. Here's an example of how English has done that with French words:

    I have a good idea for a fictional extended reading comp story lesson based upon the pictures on the squares, a picture comprehension question based upon a short narrative of the characters with the students picking A or B? What do you think? It would work in Tabletopia but that seems too confusing for sped/elementary students. But can it be done on slides? Can you draw information cards instead of reading off squares on slides?

    Thanks for the tips and information, Lachesis. I've recently started teaching Chinese university students online. Each class has 26-32 learners. They are in China, but I'm not, which actually helps because I can use Zoom. The university uses DingTalk, but, even though it has some good features, it doesn't have Breakout Rooms, which are absolutely vital for large classes. So, since I'm not in China, we can use Zoom with me as the host and my learners as participants without any problems. We do everything else on Dingtalk, though, e.g. messaging, etc. Other vital functions (which other platforms might also have) that I use are "Mute All", having students enter their English nicknames on the screen so I know who they are and so that I can take screenshots of the class to instantly take attendance, and the "Remove" function. The other day, one girl kept laughing with her roommates instead of answering me. She refused to pay attention, so I removed her from the Breakout Room. The roommate issue is a big problem. Some of the students are roommates with their classmates, which is still a problem if they are in Breakout Rooms with other students. There's too much noise, and the learners don't pay attention to their team. I asked my students to give me a list of who's roommates with who so I can organize the Breakout Room teams accordingly. But if a person's roommate is not a classmate and they are chatting with them during the lesson, that is a serious problem. Thank again.

    As you said, this is your personal belief, not a scientific fact backed with data. Personality is a problematic term from the start. Does anybody have one personality? How is personality different from behavior? It's not an easy question to answer. If you are shy but become an extrovert whenever you're wearing a mask, can't you say your personality changes when you're wearing a mask? If personality and behavior are so closely intertwined that you can't tell them apart in most situations then your point is moot. Some people use different languages the same way with no changes in behavior, other, more culturally aware learners, will tend to modify the way they act around people when they switch languages. They will therefore be perceived differently by speakers of, let's say, Japanese, and German, and those speakers will be very surprised to learn that you behave differently with the other gang...

  • @souavarocha2136
    @souavarocha2136 4 года назад

    Of course it doesn't change the personality, but we can change the way that we express ourselves and then it's' like a "personality" that people always talk about.

    Alright! You almost convinced me 😅 Ten minutes is obviously not enough for a topic like this)) maybe the core doesn't change, but I believe that genuine and thorough absorbing other languages along with the culture, step by step makes you a better person as you see little "negative" aspects of yourself as if you look at yourself from another point of view - the point of view of this new language. I mean you may become more tolerant, less worried , more caring - because speaking your new language implies it. And you get to keep it for yourself when you switch back to whatever other language you have, meaning you are growing as a person. What do you think? PS , I really enjoyed those praising words across the screen! I usually use them if I get to come up with a song title))

    • @mslachesisbraick
      @mslachesisbraick 4 года назад

      I could definitely talk about it for hours and hours and I agree with you. I think learning languages allows you to change your personality as a whole, not just in the new language, and to challenge a lot of things you took for granted when you were monocultural. What I don't believe to be true is that we switch to this different personality just because we are speaking a new language. I think it's an oversimplification to the amazing process we undergo when we interact with a new culture which is pretty amazing!
