Black Swans Introduction Unequally Yoked

In this episode we introduce ourselves and our struggle with a marriage between a believer in god and a non-believer. We discuss how this challenge is viewed by others and a bit of what a struggle it was for us. We hope to provide help for other couples who might be dealing with a "mixed marriage" like ours using our 44 years of marriage and the issues we faced together.
Still love and think about the wisdom of your videos all the time, they've always meant a lot to me
This is an excellent video! Thanks for showing what it's like to live at peace with others inasmuch as it depends upon you. Wishing you all the best. God bless!
2 minutes in and I couldn't take anymore. She claims to be a Christian, which means she supposedly believes he'll spend eternity in hell and here she is laughing it up wanting Christians to understand atheists better. Romans 1:18-23 tells us why man doesn't believe. She should be on the verge of tears pretty much all the time not making fluffy videos yapping about how well they get along.
Thanks for visiting. Obviously, this kind of rational discussion is not for you. Have a nice life. She discusses why she doesn't agree with your hateful brand of Christianity. But there are so many different types of Christian that even you can find a place for your venom. We don't really need it here. Toodles.
@@BlackSwansHome Hateful? Oh but of course, a Christian taking your situation more serious than your wife does would have to be hateful, right? Lol. Do yourself a favor and stop worrying about making RUclips videos and act like you eternity was at stake bc it is!
Prove eternal life is a real thing and I’ll take it seriously.
@@WilliamFriday No, actually you won't. See Romans 1:18-32. Unless of course the Holy Spirit draws you in. I hope that happens. God bless.
Claim whatever you like. Do you seriously think I haven't heard that kind of ugly threat a million times? Do yourself a favor and actually do some research. I have done so and I cannot go back to the blindfolded fear of your belief system. You're barking up the wrong tree with precisely the wrong approach. If you want me to believe as you do, you had better come with something better than empty threats. If you can't demonstrate the validity of your claims, you will make zero headway with me. I deal in facts. Not fantasy.
You two are the cutest!
Eyyy I missed your guys' content
You have a full head of hair and Whiskers..I'm bald and my Whiskers are sparse..to me proof of my doubt of a god...My wife is also a theist, goes to church every week, We've been married sense '77, we get along fine..I'm a Atheist, sense somewhere around the '80s..Jay on twitter.
All good stuff! I can’t help but notice all the similarities to LGBT struggles. Coming out as atheist, feeling rejected, and having to explain how one “identifies”
Absolutely! The similarities to other oppressed peoples trying to achieve justice are inevitable.
@@BlackSwansHome "Justice"? According to what Absolute standard? Oh that's right, you don't have one. You don't want God, so you can justify doing what you want BUT you still borrow something like the notion of justice from Him. This is what non believers do everyday because they can't live consistently within their worldview. And your wife should be pointing this out to you constantly.
I would add especially too when it comes to dreams and goals. But who are we when we have ideas and wishes but nothing sticks? That's one of the problems of losing identity; you can dream and be anybody you want. Kids know that is baloney, or at least they should. The reason I say it is because even I don't know my own identity. The way I see it, my love for writing, drawing and exploring are hobbies I love, but not identity. One thing for sure, I know what is my traditions, my family, my culture and I value that.
You both look super sweet! I can't wait to catch up on your videos and see more from yas! :) Stay awesome you two, much love! :)
Thank you so much! And we really appreciate the shout out on Twitter. That was awesome! Also, checking out your channel. Really great work and very important. Loved the story of Brother Joe although it's so sad. Much love back at you.
It's always so good to remember old childhood memories, especially holidays. Another thing I thought too was identity. I know a lot think of identity in today's ideals but what I'm talking about is the identity of the family, heritage, tradition and life. Like for instance, many years ago, families were following what their culture and upbringing is. Say being an irish farmer. The kids raised in the farm are have the identity of being farmers. We lost that today, which is why we need to somewhat have it back, but in the way it can fit for today's standard. We can't be the parent's occupation now, but what do we have as family and how do we value our tradition and lineage?
I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say on teaching sexuality!
Haha loved the "sky daddy reference " I'll admit I'm experiencing a faith transition from Mormonism. I haven't landed in a particular place whether I'm nondenominational Christian or kinda agnostic; it's going to be a while before I have it all sorted, but your guys' relationship and videos give me hope. Thanks!
Thanks! We are very happy when we can give hope to someone having these struggles. As we say, we've been through it and can really empathize. We wish you all the best in your transition and know that we would never judge you no matter where you end up with it. We recently found a group on Facebook; Mormon Mixed Faith Marriage, which has given us a place to discuss issues with couples who have an active believer and a Mormon apostate. It gives us a place where we aren't judged by one side or the other.
Ps. I LOVE THE BEARD!
First off, thank you for your service. As a navy vet myself i know the hardships of time apart. Secondly welcome to the community. You two work well together and i look forward to seeing more of your stuff. We need this kindof channel in the cummnity showing that you can come from different places and still reach a comprise.
Thanks Shipmate. We really appreciate the positive comments!
I'm really curious about where all your children's beliefs fell and how you dealt with those potential conflicts
We kind of thought this would come up as a question and although we've made an oblique reference here or there we definitely haven't laid that out. It is something we plan to do but we want to do it without sounding like it's a scoreboard for either view. That's harder than we thought. We're talking with the kids to see what they would like said about their beliefs before we go forward with that. Even that isn't easy because what each of them says to us individually is often different because they may be trying to spare our feelings.
I was also referred here by mr atheist and I'm really glad he did
We're glad he did too!
The interesting thing about your videos is that a lot of your advice teaches how to have good relationships and I think a lot of it applies in pretty much any kind of relationship as well as mixed faith marriages
Thank you for this great comment. As we began doing our videos we realized that very thing. Some things seemed more specific to mixed faith marriages but other things we think are just good practices for any relationship. Sometimes the stress from the breakdown of religious unity exposes or maybe I should say accentuates a couple's inadequate communication skills and other weaknesses in their relationship.
I loved this episode it was the right amount of serious and helpful and funny. Thanks for all you guys do!
Thank you for watching and for the complements.
New sub! Thank you for this amazing channel 🌻
Thank you for checking us out and the sub! Returned the favor and will be checking out your channel shortly. Gotta get some sleep first.
Love Emma’s dress! I can see your editing getting better and better and your personalities coming out even more! Great to hear that when you present a united front your children can succeed in all sorts of different ways!
When would you like to appear on our channel? Ready?
Haha! Happy to help anytime! Maybe I could talk about the challenges of pleasing atheist and theist family at a wedding?
That would be fun!
@@preppyprincess15 I am super interested in hearing what you have to say about this
krystol olsen hopefully it would be helpful!
I'm here because Mr. Atheist said you guys were awesome. And he's right! You seem to be truly sweet, wise people. I just subscribed, I'm about to binge your whole channel, and I look forward to future content. That you for being a voice for unity and understanding in a climate that can be so divisive!
Thank you so much! We'll try not to let it go to our heads, LOL. Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment or make suggestions any time.
Thanks for the shout out and thanks for the video.
You're very welcome. We appreciate the suggestion. Any time!
Oh my goodness you two are so wonderful! I feel awful at the moment and you cheered me up despite myself. Have a wonderful day!
Thank you! We're happy if we put a smile on your face. Hope you get feeling better and have a great day!
Another thing I thought too was that it's important to teach kids things in life that is necessary and age appropriate, but never tell them which side to believe. Besides, I hate it when parents shove religion or politics on their kids. Keep your belief about religion or politics away from kids because kids need to be kids and enjoy life. I've seen too many force ideology on their kids and it's harmful. Kids of course form their own thoughts, which is fine but it's also good to teach them what is ok and not, even to challenge their thoughts.
I always believe that while parenting books have their hearts in a right place, but ignoring kids who behave bad doesn't help. People seem to act as though discipline is the same as being vicious to your kids.
Jimmy sent me. Ya'll are great.
Same here!
Thank you! We owe Jimmy a big hug. Hugs all around!
You guys are so cheesy. I LOVE IT! It's adorable. Former mormon atheist here, married to a former catholic atheist who insists he is merely "agnostic" Heard about you guys on Jimmy Snow's show.
Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed our content. Love the feedback. We owe Jimmy a big hug. Hugs all around!
You guys are just so cute!!!
Thank you sooo much!
You guys are so cute!!!!!! This is a very helpful video! I"m definitely gonna share this with my boyfriend!
Thank you very much. We are happy to have you here and hope something we say can be helpful.
OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU GUYS
Thank you! Love is what it's all about. Glad to see you here.
What I find sad is the tendency for couples to say, "so you're saying..." and saying something opposite of what they're saying. Rather, just listen and if you don't understand ask to clarify. You're a couple, not an attorney.
Yeah. Putting words in anyone's mouth is a bad approach or displays a serious problem with understanding or perhaps not trying to understand. The idea of being an attorney sounds like approaching discussions as adversaries, not partners.
I love the new background! I find that the best communication tactic is definitely I statements
Thank you. We're working on a few different background ideas. We like that one but the material tends to pucker and wrinkle too easily. We are going to try to use a green screen in our next video but we need to work out the lighting to make a green screen work effectively.
This is a very relevant topic, because for me lately I've attended quite a few meetings were this subject is a big deal, and to have a couple with 44 years experience advice can be a lot of help, words from the wise. I just wanted to say this is a great subject from two wonderful people, I believe other will get a lot from it.
Thanks, Leon. Yes, we are convinced there is a need for people to have help dealing with this topic but it's not easy to find those people who would really benefit from some help like this. We hope our viewers will share our videos so that they can reach those who want them.
You are a lovely couple.
Awe shucks! Thank you.
I am wondering what your thoughts are on homeschooling?
That's a very good question. We will be discussing the issues of raising children in a mixed household like ours in one of our upcoming videos and we'll make sure to address that question. We have done homeschooling ourselves for parts of our children's schooling but we didn't include religious training at that time. I don't want to go into it too deeply in a message but we will go into that in more depth when we get to that video.
Expect this question to be addressed in our next video coming out in a few days.
Hey! I'm so glad that someone is covering this topic. My husband and I have been married for 10 years, and last year I deconverted from Christianity after several years of spiritual questioning. We have a great relationship with a solid foundation, and he isn't a fundamentalist like I was, so that definitely helps. But to see an older couple sharing their experiences with this dynamic is invaluable, so keep it up! I look forward to seeing your next video. Could you do one on the dynamics of raising children in a mixed faith marriage?
Thank you for the encouragement and congratulations on having a great relationship. We do intend at least one episode about raising children in a mixed faith marriage. We're working on that now and it will probably be in our sixth video and maybe more. Thank you so much for watching and feel free to make suggestions anytime. We hope to develop an interactive connection with our viewers.
Excellent introduction! My wife and I had very different religious views when we married; finding a middle ground was at times quite difficult - and we've not been married anywhere *near* as long as y'all! We'll be looking forward to to more videos.
Thank you! It's always good to hear that others have been successful in managing a mixed faith marriage. We would be happy to have your input if you're interested in sharing.
I was an atheist from a Methodist background, she a polytheist Wiccan from a Catholic background. We had amazing conversations, I'll tell you that. She's recently deconverted; we still have amazing conversations, and just celebrated our fourth wedding anny.
This couple is so caring! I love that they talk about problems that are a little unorthodox and not very well known. This is what the internet was made for; to share information and videos with the world and help anyone who wants help! This video reaches me on an emotional level. They are so cute! I'm so glad they figured out a way to make a religiously separated relationship work and that there is so much more to it than people think. It takes more than tolerance, trying to listen, trying to respect their beliefs, and dancing around the topic. It's about understanding, and this couple really understands one another and works as a team; which is even hard for couples of the same religious beliefs. How wholesome!
indeed. which is why i am happy for them.
True! Living with one another in an understanding way, seeking to serve the other... isn't that what love is😍
Yep, it's true that you said about believers. As you know, my own genetic father rejected me because of my homosexuality, yet you welcomed me into your family with open arms. Emma and my dad share the same religion. Tei and I look forward to meeting similar challenges as he's an agnostic atheist and I'm a Christian, too. So glad to see this channel up and going and I'm super excited to see more.
