Is It Super? || Nikka Super Rare Old Japanese Whisky REVIEW
Is this Japanese whisky from Nikka super? Let’s find out!
This is the Super Rare Old Whisky from Nikka, and that’s a lot of adjectives for what’s supposed to be a relatively cheap, easy to enjoy Japanese whiskey. We visited the Nikka Distillery and this was one of the whiskeys they gave as a tasting sample, showing that it’s meant to be easy to enjoy.
It’s a blended whiskey, which doesn’t meet the criteria to be called a Japanese whiskey anymore, so I’m guessing that means it’s got some whiskey from the Ben Nevis Distillery in Scotland blended in. There’s not a lot of information on the whiskey, it’s a blend of malt and grain, coming in at 43%ABV, with no indication of if it has colouring o...

Sweet, Smooth & Strong! || The Churchil Cocktail Recipe
Просмотров 92212 часов назад
This is a sweet, smooth and strong little cocktail! This is a Churchill cocktail, and it was invented by Joe Gilmore in the mid-1900’s in the Savoy Cocktail Bar. It was named after Winston Churchill, who apparently preferred his scotch neat, but that didn’t stop Mr. Gilmore from making this classic cocktail recipe in his honour. It’s relatively simple, and calls for blended scotch, not single m...
An IDEAL Scotch? || Glenallachie 10 Cask Strength Whisky REVIEW
Просмотров 21916 часов назад
For the first time on the channel, I’m reviewing a Cask Strength Scotch! Billy Walker, Glenallachie’s head distiller, revitalised the brand a few years back and really focussed on improving their cask programme and it shows in their whiskeys. They don’t give a lot of information about the casks used in the maturation, but I have learned that they use some Spanish Rioja red wine casks in the mat...
Tokyo Sidecar || Japanese Yuzu Sidecar Cocktail Recipe
Просмотров 122День назад
This is a really nice little riff on a classic sidecar cocktail, with a Japanese twist! This is a Yuzu sidecar, which I’ve seen called a Tokyo Sidecar as it takes the structure of a sidecar, but changes it in a few key ways. First off, we swap out the Brandy for a Japanese Blended Whiskey, to give us some really nice, sweet and oaky notes. But we also change the lemon juice for Yuzu Juice, whic...
Whiskey ROYALTY! || Suntory Royal Japanese Whisky REVIEW

This is the Suntory Royal Whiskey, which is meant to be a step up from Suntory’s easy drinking, entry-level whiskeys and from their other whiskey, the Suntory Old Whisky. Introduced to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the company, it’s the last blend created by the founder of Suntory, Shinjiro Torii. Interestingly, the bottle is designed to resemble the kanji 酉 (tori), a container for alcohol,...

Easy Drinking and Refreshing || Japanese Yuzu highball Cocktail Recipe
Просмотров 19021 день назад
I love a good Japanese highball, especially when it’s a Japanese whisky highball, and I LOVE this one! Typically, with a Japanese highball cocktail recipe, it combines whiskey, a little bit of lemon juice, sometimes some bitters, and topped off with soda water to make a complex, but refreshing drink that shows off the whiskey you’re using. In this case, for this variation on a classic highball,...
OLD Whiskey || Suntory Old Japanese Whisky REVIEW
Просмотров 19228 дней назад
This is the Suntory Old Whiskey, which is meant to be a step up from Suntory’s easy drinking, entry-level whiskeys. There’s not a whole lot of information on it, so it’s hard to know how old this “old” whiskey really is! Introduced after WW2, Suntory Old Whiskey was priced above Suntory's entry level bottle, and below the Suntory Royal, and was targeted at restaurants, where a nice, but not too...

Is This PERFECT? || Glenallachie 15 Year Old Single Malt REVIEW
Просмотров 314Месяц назад
When it comes to Scotch, is older whisky better? This is the Glennallachie 15 year old Single Malt Scotch, which is essentially the older brother whiskey to the Glenallachie 12, which is their entry level scotch. It’s a Speyside scotch, so it should be lighter and softer than something like an Islay, but hopefully it’s full of flavour! Billy Walker, Glenallachie’s head distiller, revitalised th...

Hail To The Chief! || Taoiseach Cocktail Recipe
I often lick the outside of oranges and lemons myself. I've been banned from Tesco, Dunnes, Supervalu Lidl and Aldii They just don't understand me.
I mean, how else are you supposed to know if they're any good?
Have you tried any whiskeys you would call "super"?
Baby's first shaker 😂😂😂 Awesome list man, you've thought of everything!
Haha! Thanks, I hope it helps some people!
I've just mate a terrible cocktail-shite thingy with rum martini rosso triple sec jb rum and orange juice. After I finish this I will definetly go make one of this since my original goal was making something other than negroni using vermouth. Thank you algorithm! (I've also wasted the rum a bit)
That's a bit of a shame about that rum cocktail, but hopefully you'll enjoy this one!
Terrific video Matt! I will add Maraschino cherries - terrific quality! Worth the price!
100% they're so important!
@@TheWhiskeyNerd Yes!
Other than what you mentioned, I'd say some Maraschino cherries. They're one of those overlooked elements that the home bartender might not have.
Agreed!
Definitely one of those overlooked essentials! (and sometimes expensive too)
What home bar gifts would you recommend?
For me, the correct glass is paramount. Drinking alcohol is an event and always deserves the highest respect and elegance . Great ideas here!
Redbreast Cuatro Barriles Edition...have never tasted anything so fine..❤❤
@@jasonhitchcock5414 agreed! I blind tasted when judging some of the the Irish Whiskey Awards catwgories this year and it was my highest rated whiskey!
good times start with bad whiskey, great times well great whisky - Cam
@@BuzzWithYourCuz now that's a quote for the ages!
If it's named after Churchill, it's gotta be strong!
What's your favourite Scotch cocktail?
Rusty Nail, as I am a Drambuie whore...
the rusty nail haha
@@BuzzWithYourCuz a classic!
Yeah i like little bottles for trying out cocktails I agree
Exactly, cheers!
This sounds yummy! I love lime!
It's so good!
Is getting a bottle of this free good or any other whiskey
This is a nice little whiskey, so if you get a bottle free, it's even better!
I'd have to upgrade all of these ingredients! Cheers!
You should! Would probably make for a better cocktail in the end result!
In Hell all the shelves are stocked with nothing but Johnnie Walker Red. A bit surprised that you just didn't upgrade to The Black as it's not that much more expensive than The Red, especially since it's the base of the cocktail. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the cocktail. I will have to give this a try. There is a tale involving Sir Winston and his preferred recipe for a Martini when he was asked how dry he would like his martini, where he told the bartender to pour a shot of gin into a chilled martini glass, look in the direction of Italy, and hand him the glass. Thus, I am surprised that the creator of this cocktail used any vermouth at all.
I'd add the JW Black to the Red for Hell! I'd have to upgrade! Cheers!
Johnnie walker red is never allowed enter my home! 😂 I had heard that story about Churchill, but the glance towards Italy (France in some tellings) was because it was during the war and they couldn't get any vermouth from the continent, so they could only nod in their direction.
@@TheWhiskeyNerd The truth is now known! A bit disappointing, but the truth nonetheless. Imagine a world without vermouth! Another evil perpetrated by fascists.
This one looks good need a new bottle of scotch
It'd be a great addition to the bar!
Nice one Matt this is a really tasty one! If you want some peat, the Lum Reek 10 Blended Malt CS is also from Glenallachie so you might enjoy that. Aberlour A'Bunadh is also a solid choice. Cheers!
Thanks for the info! Those sound like they could be good choices!
Coming back to this a year later after pucking up a bottle. I love it. I 100% get your notes, especially the stewed plums and the mouthfeel. I also get a lot of that teeling poitin from memory which i guess was the original spirit put in cask. Also love the achill island bordeaux finish and the green spot finishes (that everyone loves)
Yeah, there's definitely a specific "DNA" from their distillery's pot still, and I think it works well with the influence of the wine casks!
Have a couple different batches of this one stashed in my cabinet. This is how a sherried scotch should taste imho. Even managed to buy batch no 1 about a year ago for the original price.
I can see why! I definitely want to try other batches and see how different they are
Great review. This looks like a winner. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Thanks for watching! It was really nice!
Love the stuff. Also worth a look is the GlenScotia Victoriana, Benromach CS and the Glendronach CS. All.NAS, but very tasty.
Thanks for the tips! Definitely looking to explore more scotches in 2025 (and some Indian whiskeys too)
What's your favourite cask strength scotch?
Ardbeg Coreyvreckan.
Arran Machrie Moor cask strength. Peated, citrusy, VERY malty and even sweet. Good swimmer as well-You can try it with or without water and find out balance that suites your taste best.
this sounds different and great. thanks for the review. cheers
It was different, and very fun!
Nice one guys! I have a miniature of this one so now that I know your take on it I think I'll crack it open 😃 Cheers!
Cheers! Hope you like it!
I've only had a few Japanese releases. In the entrance or mid range I have not been impressed yet. Good, not great, and very expensive. I'm sure the higher priced ones are much better. For now, my favourite by far is Nikka from the Barrel.
NFTB is really solid, and it's a shame about how expensive Japanese whiskey can be overseas, as what should be a simple sipper has to be compared against some higher tier spirits
This and five farms by far the best out there
100%! Coole Swan is nice too, if you're looking for chocolate, but for the classic Irish creams, these are the best
I love Yuzu as a flavour
Matt, this looks great
Cheers, it was!
What's your favourite Japanese inspired cocktail?
I've never seen this bottle before
Yeah, it's not too common outside of Japan!
My favorite might be Athru...or anything else from Cooley ;) Would love to see a "TOP 5 Most underrated Irish Whiskeys"
Cooley make some cracking stuff! And that's a good idea! Might add the condition that it has to be a "general release" bottling which can be found pretty much anyway
@@TheWhiskeyNerd cant wait!
Nikka is pretty good, even the less expensive ones
Agreed!
If I'm sitting down at home and I want to pour an Irish and I have these five, It would be the Redbreast Cask Strength each and every time. If I'm having a boilermaker, it would be Jameson. Tullamore usually leaves me wanting more. Proper 12 is one to pass on and I haven't had a Bushmills in so long I can't even comment on it really. A solid list to be certain, Matt! Cheers to ya.
Cheers! And yeah, Redbreast 12 CS is always a solid and reliable dram
Have you tried any good Japanese whiskeys?
Is Paddy's completely gone?
Yeah, unfortunately it's not in the top 5! But maybe after the news about Conor McGregor, Proper 12 will drop in popularity!
Great to see you both and hear all about this one.
Thanks Ultan! It was a great one to review!
So far Bushmills Single Malt 10 years. Neat of course. It is sad that the most sold Irish whiskey is the only Irish whiskey I consider not drinkable. It really has a weird taste which I really don't like and it's not as smooth as other irish whiskets.
@@KnutBluetooth yeah, I was so surprised that all of the lovely whiskeys coming from all the other brands only amounts to about 6% of the total!
My favourite Irish whiskey-too many to mention 😊. Basically, I choose from those „6% of what remains” as You say, whiskies. Usually I stay away from 40ABV whiskies (exceptions are Writer’s tears cooper Pot and The Irishman The Harvest-those two are (very) good). I call core range Jameson whiskies “wasted potential”-they could be so much better at higher strength and no chill-filtration. No offence-just my personal opinion 😊.
There's a lot of good stuff in that 6%! And yeah, I can see what you mean, and that's why I was glad to see the Jameson Pot Still "Five Oak" release at 46%!
My favourite is redbreast 12. Iove it but sometimes I'm underwhelmed by it depending on the day.
I can get that, it's lovely, but as you get used to bigger and bolder flavours, especially cask strength whiskeys, it can seem a little "gentle" by comparison
Tullamore D.E.W. is my go to whiskey, and has been for ~25 years. Standard Bushmills is fine. Black Bush is much better. Paddy is another decent entry level Irish that is common and affordable here in northwestern Illinois. I do not care for the standard Jameson, but the Stout Cask finish really is quite nice. I recently acquired my first bottle of the Red Breast cask strength and, no surprise, I quite like it. The $95 price tag ensures that it will be a special occasion dram though. I have yet to try the Proper Twelve as I haven't heard a single positive review of it.
Yeah, proper 12 is not worth your time, and I agree on the Black Bush and Jameson Stout: a little more expensive than the "standard" but a big jump up in quality. If you're looking for another good one to try, Powers John's Lane is great and not too expensive
I’d like to apologize on behalf of Americans for the popularity of Proper Twelve. We can clearly do better. 😂
Haha! The marketing machine has clearly done its work on college students
oh cool list. I need to try more Irish Whiskey. thanks for sharing cheers
@@OldFashionedWays you totally should!
Great video as always. Shocked about Proper Twelve. I bought a bottle when it first came out under Conor McGregor. Absolute garbage. I know he sold it and it might be better but will be hard for me to part with my money to buy another bottle. The misleading "Twelve" on the bottle doesn't help either. Now for me I love Irish Whiskey. So many good ones to choose from. At the moment, Green Spot holds my top spot. Cheers from Canada!
Cheers right back at you! And yeah, the only thing "Proper" about Proper 12 is the name!
Mostly entry level offerings from absolutely stunning distilleries. As for proper 12, it’s not a challenging whiskey, but it has a challenging background. Best to leave aside any spirit that’s more marketing than anything else.
Well said! The marketing machine behind Proper 12 is whats making it a best seller, not the quality of the product!
It makes me sad that proper 12 is what people think of when they think Irish whiskey in the usa, its commercial rubbish. Standard Jameson is miles better and redbreast is what people should think of when they think Irish whiskey
Yeah, there's a lot of people who will try out Proper 12 and give up on Irish whiskey because of it!
I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Busker Triple Cask when I ordered it in a bar. I just thought it went down very nicely. Now, maybe it was because I had no expectations but I was pleased to see it in your list of awards (Blend Non Age Statement under 50 euros)..I enjoyed your take on the whiskey winners too...
Thanks for sharing! And yeah, the Busker stuff is really nice, and it's a fun experience to try the blend alongside the malt, grain and pot still components
My favorite Irish whiskey is Powers Johns Lane and Redbreast 12 Cask Strength, always on my shelf
Those are great whiskeys, the Powers John's Lane Cask Strength is also worth a try if you can find it!
What's your favourite Irish Whiskey?
Jamesonn Black Barrel proof . Also the Roe and Co 2020 Cask strength 13 yo Single Malt Port cask matured flew under all radars and was incredible value and was a hit for me. Unfortunately the 40% Irish offerings leave me underwhelmed.
Powers Irish Rye. I fell in love with it, and can't bring myself to open the last bottle I have of it.
@@HostileButHonourable that Roe and Co is a real cracker. I found a bottle of it last year at a random small bottle shop. It's a 13 yo cask strength Bushmills with port influence, perfect!
@@mrsausage001 ah there'll always be more, as it's a core product now. Really nice in manhattans and things like that
Powers Johns Lane 👌🏼
This looks awesome, and I'm glad a little yuzu juice goes a long way because the stuff is expensive!
It really is! Good thing it does give a lot of flavour!
