Hello hello! In today's cozy little draw chat video, I wanted to talk about the importance of creating art. The feeling you get when you get lost in a project, the little pleasures you feel when you bring something to life. I feel like it's easy to brush aside the slower more "mundane" acts of creating instead of going for something like genAI, but I really think there's something to be said fo...

Great video as always, Forrest. I always look forward to your content. You really need to have a sponsorship agreement with some colored pencils or watercolor paper! When I was first introduced to your style, actually I think it was through Annabelle's profile when I found her book, I thought you must've been inspired by Mary Blair, but also the cartoony minimalist style of the 50s, which I love. And I'm also a fan of Christian Robinson! Many of the other Illustrators I didn't know. Gouache is a great medium, but some mediums you are just more drawn to than others Maybe yours is pastels, while mine is water colour. I just feel happy and at ease when using these colours. Interesting with the AI talk. It's crazy to think that we are currently living in the science fiction world they wrote about in the 70s and 80s. I would have preferred flying cars to AI that takes over the jobs that we humans want to do (drawing, painting, writing, analyzing). But it's clearly here to stay, and perhaps that is the reason why analogue art has had a revival. How can we use AI as a tool without it taking over our lives? As a teacher I usually have this discussion with my students: Why study music? Why do art? And they forget that our world is filled with music and made of art. Also when students question reading fiction. But it isn't real or practical knowledge? Reading books strengthen our empathy and our human understanding. Literature turns our gaze outwards towards the world, towards new horizons and away from ourselves. Music, art, dance, and literature train our capacity to immerse ourselves, and they give us unimaginable insights into what it means to be human. It opens the door to the depths of the mind and new perspectives that you might not have thought of yourself. It's also something for you to enjoy and it's a way we connect with each other. It's like we are losing our spirituality and most things are about growth, being efficient and monetizing everything. In this digital age we must focus more than ever on real physical communities and on creating with our hands.

I want to share my personal opinion on AI art. 1) if it's learning content was given with consent from artists, I don't think the issue would be so HORRIFYING. But it is stolen, so GROSS. 2) AI in general, has GREAT applications. PLEASE go look up the Japanese bakery/cancer cell identification using AI. This could be LIFE CHANGING technology. 3) AI in art, in my personal opinion, can be used to play with, but should not be used as an actual public art piece. 3a) However, I have heard of the AI art competitions, yeah, I think that would be fine as it's own limited category IF the generators were working off of CONSENT given art. Back to 3. I'm writing a book, and I needed something to sit for my book cover. Staring at the blank logo was KILLING my soul. But I really didn't know how or what to do with it. So I typed a shitty prompt into a free ai, and grabbed something to just sit there. Like when you prep your canvas do it's not just white. After a few days, I felt more confident in a design, and made my own (shitty) book cover and replaced the AI one. It was just a place holder. I also took the chance while playing with AI to dissect the images they were producing, and picking apart their structure, the ratios, shapes, fields of depth, color choices, etc. And this helped me place in my mind, how I might draft up my REAL book cover, or at least art pages. [Yes, im making an adult book with PICTURES!!] I find that dissecting real artists works, I get swept too much into their style and I get confused, or I end up STEALING their style instead of using it to create something of my own. AI art is already a Mashup of stolen art, so by dissecting it, I'm kind of learning what EVERYONE does similarly, and it takes away that direct copying from a singular artist. Do I think we should use AI art to teach composition, ABSOLUTLY NOT. I'm just pointing out that this tool can be used for good or evil. I think we should continue to push for people to ACTUALLY make art, and not rely on AI to replace the creative process. But I don't think we should confuse 'people who are pretending to be artists by using AI' with 'AI being an evil concept.'

I'm in LOVE with your sketchbook art. So much inspiration, thank you so much for fresh art air :D I was browsing videos about sketchbooks because I was doing research before recording my own sketchbook tour, and I'm so soooo glad I found your channel. I want to have that kind of courage in combining colors😍😍

I hear Rick Rubin said something like this: " Making art it's almost like a diary entry, so how I can could be concerned that someone else might not like my diary entry. Doesn't make sense, my diary entry has nothing to do with anyone else. So everything we make as artists are essentially diary entries " That idea helped me alot in my creation process! I don't know but maybe helps someone here too 🥰

Btw you asked for insights on the artists your where referencing (I know the struggle haha). I think on the spread with the… let's say "weird shaped head", I recognize some of Amélie Fléchais's characters. The sheep/goat and the little wolf - she's one of my favorite Illustrators 😊
