2024 Wrap-up
This past year brought us to new and different places - from celebrating one of our own as a Corpsmember of the Year to creating underwater habitat - 2024 was a fascinating year that challenged us to get outside our comfort zones. Corpsmembers managed invasive species, cleared and maintained trails, established more pollinator habitat AND underwater habitat by making things called 'spider blocks' - all while in the process of making themselves better candidates for employment and obtaining their diplomas. We can wait to see what is in store for 2025!

Creating habitat with 'Spider Blocks'
Просмотров 5921 день назад
NJYC of Phillipsburg is helping Merrill Creek Reservoir improve its fish habitat at the property by repurposing autumn olive, an invasive woody species removed during its grassland restoration work, into 78 underwater spider blocks. These man-made structures, which provide valuable shelter, nurseries and foraging areas for fish, macroinvertebrates and other aquatic organisms in the reservoir, a...

2024 National Trails Day
Просмотров 107 месяцев назад
To commemorate #NationalTrailsDay we’re sharing our new walking paths in our pollinator meadow at Bread Lock Park. Planted late June of last year, we are excited to see what is about to come. Seeds that needed to undergo a freeze/thaw process have established themselves and soon will be putting on a colorful display! We even spotted a box turtle that is enjoying this new habitat! Get out there ...
Chainsaw Training
Просмотров 539 месяцев назад
Our Climate Corps Team participated in Levels 1 & 2 Trail Work Class to get certified as chainsaw operators on trees that are down and hung up, as well as limbing and bucking techniques. This training was incredibly informative and provided some really useful techniques we can now put into practice with our program partners where we provide trail maintenance. As our climate changes, and the eff...

Planting a pollinator meadow at BLP
Просмотров 68Год назад
Our Delaware River Climate Corps finally got out to BLP to plant our 7.5 acre plot of warm-season grasses and wildflower mix. Building off our planting from last year - a nice focal point for visitors, but only about 500 sq. feet - this meadow, once established will provide a unique habitat beneficial to our pollinator friends and a beautiful meadow to walk through. Here Samir is driving while ...
Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the CCC
Просмотров 132Год назад
The roots of our program were established 90 years ago by the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps. While the CCC has since gone away, different versions of it have been in operation ever since - because it's a model that works. The Friends of the NJ School of Conservation invited us to serve as the Color Guard for their flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the CC...

I like so so much that the Morris Canal powered itself. No poluting anything. Gravity, Roebling's wire ropes (3"in diameter) and water. I look a vacation to study the canal in 2006. Went from pburg up to Lake Hopatcong. Loved seeing one of the Scotch Turbines there. Something...in the 50's, my family and I lived in Glen Rock NJ. Just east of Paterson. We had a lawn sprinkler that had four little tubes with tiny holes in each one. Similar to the Scotch Turbine.
