I lived in seoul for almost a year. I didnt work there so i cant comment on that aspect. I know koreans treat people based on their nationality. If you are from a rich, western country they like you. If not you are trash. If you have money you are golden. As a blk american i can say i was treated very well and i felt safe. Safer than my own city, NYC. I really just went there for fun. But i knew people working there that had terrible experiences. Africans and filipinos get very poor treatment especially.

@ΠαρασκευηΚωστελιδου well. I'm African from Nigeria with an athletic body and living in Korea. African men can live and survive in Korea for longer periods with their self-esteem and charm intact because we are simply less sensitive. The problem is our African women. The beauty standard here will affect ur self-esteem negatively. I'll advice her to look for an English- speaking country like Canada, USA or the UK to settle in. Just keep Korea as a fantasy world in your mind or u can come here just for a very short visit. It's not a suitable place to live for a long-term. Even African American girls feel irritated by Korean beauty standards not to talk of a girl or a lady from Africa. It's a no. Not a good place if u want to protect ur mental health. Stay where u feel important as a girl. Stay where men value ur beauty and chase u. It's good for a lady's mental health. ✌️

Yeah the money thing for the visa is very discriminatory. Foreigners usually make less anyways, which already IS a problem. They dont get raises or chances at career development as Koreans do. Usually almost no chance. Then when an organization does ask you to expand beyond your original scope, they offer only possibilities of future benefits. Just to move the goalposts, whenever you do what they ask or even overachieve.

I am going to be frank and the most diplomatic I can be while being blunt enough to get my points across... You can't teach English. You don't speak it yourself. I have a very hard time understanding you 75% of the time. Your vocabulary is not adequate, your diction is not adequate. And it's not just you, I work with many Africans....they don't speak English well. That is the sad reality. For the longest time Koreans were taught English by bad speakers themselves. That hindered the progress of English use in Korea for decades. They have realized that in the early 2000s so now they are more strict. I would have loved to hear you speak some Korean. When you say "HwaegugIn Saram", your R is not pronounced well, you pronounce it from the throat like an English speaker. If I can't understand you in English, how can a Korean sales person could? The bank account thingy...There are so many foreigners that try and sometimes succeed until they are caught trying to break the system, that I understand them trying to fence you out of financial freedom. You're not suppose to earn money, even from Google AdSense. Your friends send you money, have them send it to your husband, he can give you cash afterwards. That's what 'dependence' means. Foreigners have to accept that their staying in Korea under some Visa arrangements, are 'privileges' that you should respect. About the uneasiness of being a foreigner in Korea. Picture this for a second....I am a white woman. I roam all over South Korea...I live in a sea of Korean people. That is what I want. I know I am different but it doesn't bother me at all. But when suddenly a foreigner shows up, I am startled. I am. It bothers my perception of community, as I detach my western roots from my psyche. So you better get used to have Koreans be startled when you appear. They might hide it very well but that's that. They basically have a homogeneous society and accepting their reaction is much better than trying to force them to change by having enormous immigration and change that aspect of that society, because one thinks it's bad or unacceptable. It's not our country. I am not saying that is your quest but a lot do it for that quest.

TY for posting this video. Your comments about living in South Korea are not unique. There are numerous YT videos made by different foreigners...who are not of very white skin...who have expressed the same frustration with Korean people and their society. The exclusionary attitudes seem to not be as strong with younger Korean generations, but it's still there. Other Asian nations do not appear to have the same level of prejudice and are more accepting of outsiders which is wonderful and the way it should be also in Korea. It's a real shame because Kdramas make the nation seem so nice. I think that is why Americans of color mostly refuse to listen to Kpop or attend Kpop concerts. Korean animosity is well-understood here in America and people refuse to give their money to music and associated paraphernalia from the prejudiced society. There's no love lost. Again, this is so very unfortunate. Hopefully, this entire situation both within Korea and outside of Korea will change in the future. Until then, individuals like yourself will have to decide: Should I really stay here or should I move to somewhere else where I'm welcomed? Best wishes to you and good luck!🫶❤❤❤❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ PS. Even Asians from other nations have reported on YT videos that they also experience prejudice living in Korea. There's a video on the history of Korea that tries to explain why this hatred of others began within Korean society, but there's still no excuse for the hatred to continue. The world is a global community. There's no room for hatred anywhere. Koreans need to better understand this and actively address the problem if they want expansion of their nation's financial ties with the rest of the world.🙏

This is so important! Kdramas are a fantasy. They aren't showing the reality. Domestic violence is so high in Korea. Women are second class citizens. the sexual violence towards foreigners is so bad. They're justice system doesn't deal with it. It's just victim shaming. The victims are the ones held responsible both legally and financially.

As long as you have a bachelor’s degree of any kind and from an English speaking country such as the US, then yes you can teach there if you meet that criteria. Right now I am working towards my bachelor’s degree so I can teach there

Thank you dear for sharing your experience. I hope you find a better place and find better opportunities. I watch a young black girl who was a former model in S. KOREA and her experience was so bad she quit her employment even though it paid her well. She bought a house in JAPAN 🇯🇵 and she still blogs about her day to day life there.

To be fair they have a lot to come into diversity. But you do have an ajunma look hun and they are very much into beauty and people with western cute looks. Its already a standout when you are a foreigner but when you do not fit into cute stereotype too, then.. you might not have as good/bad experience as some other foreigners. But as a foreigner you have to come into Korea with your own thing because if you expect to thrive with a company there as a Black ajunma looking lady, definitely hardest. Better head to UK or Us for that lol.

@AdaomaOnwukaeme If you are interested, have a look at Korean beauty standards, look it up and see if you fit the description or the comparisons between your look and their standard. Their system is generally worse than the White standard they are trying to imitate. Current day & age, many white people are trying to tan and be more darker in complexion. But the current Asian (East & South East) beauty standard are trying to look whiter than White people themselves. It's as though they are decades behind in the what is currently happening in Western beauty standard. So I give them about 20 years before they become much more diverse & focus less on the tiny pointed features, skinny figure, smooth skin and pale skin trend that they are currently are stuck in. Currently, mostly foreigners that match those standards are likely to thrive within their community you should know. If you do not fit that description then it is best you go there somewhat established prior to trying to join their community, otherwise you will struggle to benefit within their community. Everyone should learn and understand this, especially as a Black person. Even more important as a Black female, we are respected even lesser than Black males.

@danisverse thank you for your submission. I completely understand what you mean, and where you are coming from. That you will take the time to write to me, means a lot. Honestly, I am quite comfortable in my skin and not interested in their "white standard". By the way, who created standards of beauty? On what criteria is beauty or looks weighed? Anyway, this is just me thinking aloud.

Because white people have colonized, most countries see being light or white as authority. White is power. As a Black woman in the US, I would NOT want to go where being black is frowned upon. The Korean beauty standard, glass perfect skin, white as hell, skinny... Come to California baby! You'll be celebrated ❤

Because, the very same dull accent, we destroy the good clear English. English spoken by Nigerians, it's different from the Known English.
