Part II of II 37:30 The pastor argues that 1 Cor 14:34-35 is not laying down a template for all women in all churches, but rather that the Corinthian church was experiencing an issue of disorderly conduct within the church and that the women needed to be silent in order to address that issue in that church, exclusively. While there is a certain amount of validity to this argument, of far more importance, is the avoidance of issues of impropriety. It would be scandalous for any man to be interacting one on one with a woman not his wife. This is why Paul entreats women to reserve her questions for her husband, rather than have a woman seeking out the teacher on her own and inviting salacious gossip. Paul wants to avoid any appearance of impropriety, as is entirely appropriate. The pastor again sneers while quoting the Bible. Entirely inappropriate. 43:00 - The pastor argues that the above verses (1 Cor 14:34) could not possibly be about remaining silent within the church meeting because 3 chapters earlier (1 Cor 11:3-6) spoke of women prophesying and praying. These verses where not dealing with actions, but with appearance. Both men and women are called to account for how they appeared in the church. There is no context concerning where or when the women were prophesying, or even if they were doing so. The verses deal specifically with how they should appear if they were to do so. 45:00 - The pastor sneers one more time while quoting 1 Tim 2:11 and completely mis-states why Paul does not tolerate women in authority over men. He states that Paul uses the idea of original sin as the reason women should not teach. In point of fact, it is much more simple than that. Adam and Eve are mentioned as a template for order instituted by God. The simple truth is that Eve was deceived while Adam was not. Adam knew better and chose to sin anyway. This is not about sin at all, but about deception. Women, in general, tend to be more passionate, while men, in general, tend to be more rational. Therefore, men are less likely to be caught up and swept away by some fancy new doctrinal ideas. Men are more likely to be skeptical and check them against scripture, like the Bereans. This is the why for Paul’s argument to Timothy. Getting back to the pastor’s argument about doctrinal ideas harmonizing thought the Bible. What does scripture have to say about authority? In Genesis, Adam was placed in authority over the entire Garden of Eden, including Eve. Abraham was in authority over Sarah, yet when he yielded to Sarah regarding an heir, the disaster known as Ismael resulted. Israel is still dealing with the fallout of that decision to this day. Isaac was in authority over Rebekah while Jacob was in authority over Rachel and Leah. Judah was in authority over his house, yet when he abdicated his responsibility, Tamar had to take radical action to resolve the issue. In Exodus, Moses was placed in authority over all of Israel, yet when Miriam became jealous and attempted to usurp authority, disaster followed as she became leprous. Yet the Lord yielded when Moses interceded on her behalf. Joshua, likewise, was placed in authority over all Israel. All but one of the Judges were men, with the notable exception of Deborah. But why was Deborah in authority? Because Barak refused his role. Yet even Deborah honored her position as mother over her position as a Judge. Starting in Chronicles, Saul was made King over all Israel. From that point forward, Israel was ruled by Kings, not queens. We saw Abigail intercede with David on behalf of her husband Nabal. Why? Because Nabal refused to do his duty out of greed. When David refused to do his duty as king, we saw him fall into sin with Bathsheba. But Bathsheba was not placed in authority over David. Solomon was over the Queen of Sheba, not vice versa. All of the prophets were men. And when the messiah finally comes on the scene, all of His disciples were men. The template the Bible provides, from beginning to end, has husbands in authority over wives. Men in authority over other men. The only time a wife is given authority is when a husband fails to do his duty or refuses his responsibility. Women act in the absence of men, not in usurpation of their place. So when it comes to women in ministry, there is no Biblical prohibition. Women can serve other women, or children, but should not be placed in authority over men, nor should they minister to men, unless there is no man willing or able to do so. This is the order the Bible gives us, from Genesis forward. Jesus does not do or say anything to change it, which is why the apostles affirm it going forward. Throughout the sermon, the pastor repeatedly sneered while quoting the Bible. A rule of thumb for reading scripture is that when you don’t like what scripture says, the problem isn’t what scripture says, it’s you.

Part I of II This sermon is remarkably inconsistent. While it tries to make the argument that women should be allowed to work in ministry, it fails to address where the Bible prohibits women from working in ministry. In point of fact, the Bible does not withhold any position in any church from women. The same spiritual gifts that are made available to men are likewise made available to women. The only prohibition the Bible places on women, is that they should not be placed in authority over men. The Bible allows for women to be in authority over men in only one case, that being when men have refused or are unable to take up the responsibility of the position of authority. Below I have laid out my rebuttals to Pastor Paul’s argument, point by point and timestamped for your convenience. 4:30 - The pastor argues that some say Acts 2:17-21 cannot be used to give women authority in the church because prophecy (or revelation) has ceased and thus women should be silent. He takes the position that if this is true, men, as well as women, should be silent. This is spurious, because prophecy is not the only office available in the church. There are plenty of other positions that men occupy, such as elders, teachers, counselors, etc. The only occasion where this would apply is if the only position of authority in the church were Prophet. 5:10 - The pastor makes the argument that “some” say women should not speak AT ALL in church. Churches aren’t run based on what “some” say. Churches ought to be run based on the template provided in the Bible. In point of fact, there in no Biblical prohibition against women speaking in the church. Services were to be kept orderly and free from impropriety, but that does not prohibit women from speaking at all. You can’t argue against something the Bible doesn’t say. 5:50 - The pastor makes the point that doctrine must harmonize through out the entirety of scripture in order to be true. Yet his own argument does not even harmonize within the books that he takes citations from, much less throughout the entire 66 books of the Bible. 6:30 - The pastor states that those arguing against women in ministry cherry pick verses and take them out of context to make their points, yet he is guilty of the very same practice. He cites Job 1:21 as fallacious based on Job’s statement in Job 42:3 where he repents of his earlier criticism’s of the Lord. Talk about cherry picking! He skips the 41 chapters in between the two verses he cites. While it is true that Job repents, he is repenting of his criticism of the Lord after he has been visited and had debates with his wife and his three friends. Job’s attitude in the immediate aftermath of Satan’s attacks is entirely in keeping with his faith. He accepts that it was God’s will to allow these events to occur. He only becomes angry after his wife tells him to “curse God and die” and then his friends make (mostly incorrect) arguments about why these events occurred. Only after those human interventions does Job become discontented with the Lord. Once the Lord Himself makes an appearance and shows Job his error, Job repents, not of his attitude in chapter 1, but of his questioning the righteousness of the Lord. 12:30 - The pastor states that wives are not to obey Ephesians 5:22 (and sneers while quoting), rather husbands are to obey Ephesians 5:25. Paul’s instruction for husbands is entirely valid, but these instructions do not negate his instructions to wives. Marriage works best when both are obedient to God’s will. If a husband is obedient to Eph 5:25 while a wife ignores Eph 5:22, the husband will find he has great difficulty doing his part. This is because, as much as women want to be cherished and protected, a husband wants to be acknowledged, respected and affirmed in his role. A husband without the respect of his wife will find himself feeling hollow and incomplete. This is why it is so important that both yield to the authority in their life. Wives to her husband and husbands to Christ. 16:30 The pastor attempts to use a sailing ship as a metaphor for marriage and states that husbands would be the sail. To the contrary, if marriage is a ship, the husband would be the Captain. The Captain makes the decisions on board. When to let sail out, when to reef the sails, what course to take. Whether to sail into a storm or to flee it. In contrast, sails are passive. They can take no action on their own and only respond to the wind, either being slack when there is no wind or being full when the wind blows. Husbands should never be passive in marriage. Husbands must be active to avoid pitfalls, to weather storms, to protect the home. The pastor clearly misapplied this metaphor. If he would have husbands be passive, he would see many more marriages fail in his congregation. 17:40 - The pastor claims that “some” (again) would have the husband be head of all women. The Bible never makes that claim. You can’t argue against something the Bible doesn’t say. Again. 18:15 - The pastor tells a story about his daughter and military service. He states that she asked if he would take her place. This is entirely as it should be. If the daughter took this role, she would usurping the role of the husband or father in acting as the protector. This is only appropriate if the husband or father refuses to take responsibility for acting in this capacity. 19:45 - The pastor argues that Mary and Elizabeth (Luke 1:39) are filled with the spirit and are proclaiming revelation. While true, it is notable that they are not doing this in public or in the Temple, but privately, with each other. It is entirely appropriate for women to proclaim revelation or scripture to each other. He does likewise for Mary Magdalene in John 20:11, stating that Jesus’ use of Mary to convey news of his resurrection to the disciples lays out template for women to exercise authority in the church. To the contrary, Jesus does not place Mary in authority, but rather uses her as a messenger, which is entirely consistent with scripture. God used Rahab to shelter the spies in Jericho and Queen Esther to expose the machinations of Haman to Xerxes. Jesus used the Samaritan woman at the well to carry news of the Gospel. Women have often been used to carry messages throughout the Bible. 27:30 - The pastor tries to make the argument that the reason Jesus did not have any women as disciples is that Jesus was operating under the “old covenant.” To the contrary, Jesus broke the old covenant in many places. Jesus ate with Gentiles. Jesus taught with women present in the audience. Jesus spoke publicly with women who were not his wife and performed miracles on the Sabbath. All of these were expressly forbidden under the old covenant. So if Jesus was truly operating under it, He did a poor job of keeping it. The pastor also states that the veil (separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple) was torn at Jesus’ resurrection. This is false. The veil was torn at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross, not at His resurrection. 30:35 - The pastor states that Romans 16:1 commends Phoebe and places her in authority as a deaconess within the 1st century church. This is a misinterpretation of the usage of the word deaconess (or deacon). Paul uses the word diakonos which is translated as “servant.” It is used most frequently in this fashion in the New Testament. While diakonos can be and is translated as “minister” as well, the usage is always in the capacity of serving others. To put it bluntly, in the early church, a deacon was not a position of authority, but a position of service. This is especially true given the context of Phoebe’s service to Paul and the early church. It is only in 18th century and later that deacon became a position of authority within the church. The pastor also tries to place Priscilla in authority by virtue of her name coming before that of her husband in Romans 16:3-4. In reality, there is very little significance to this usage. Paul is merely following the principle of first mention. When Paul first introduces the reader to Priscilla, it is in the context of her as the wife of Aquila, a local Jew. His later reference to her follows this example. The pastor also tries to make much of the fact that Priscilla and Aquila hosted a home church. Because of this, he argues, Priscilla must have had authority. To the contrary, the church was hosted in their home because Aquila allowed it. Aquila was entirely within his authority as her husband to forbid hosting the church, if he chose. As a good Christian, he offered up his home and Priscilla acted as hostess, as every good Jewish wife would. Truly, had she failed to act as hostess, Priscilla would have brought shame upon her husband and her household. 33:45 - The pastor argues the Nymphas hosted a church in her home (Col 4:14-15). As stated above, a woman hosting a gathering at her home, was not in authority, but exercising hospitality. While Paul states that she hosted meetings, it does not say that she taught, nor does it make any mention of her knowledge of the scriptures. Paul only states that she hosted.

Deny Gods word to your own peril. The irony of this is that your cherry picking versus to advance your own agenda. There is a command structure and it has been clearly illustrated multiple times in the Bible but starting at the beginning so let’s go to Genesis. Just because you do not agree with it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist Christ over the body of his church. The father over the son. The woman is to be the helper of the man Genesis 2:18:20. This was Gods design before the fall of man. After the fall of man God knows the inclination of woman and he tells her she will be cursed and what she needs to do to have right living with God in Genesis 3:16. Not to rule/have authority over her husband. Your illustration of your own daughter proves my point. Woman are to be protected and provided for but to do that they need to listen to what men tell them to do. You’re saying that we are equal yet you’re not telling your daughter to pick up a rifle and go to the front lines. Rather you’re telling her to stay home I will take your place. She willing puts herself under your authority because you are protecting her. Woman in todays day and time suffer from the same issue as in the early church times and in the very beginning in the garden. When they feel safe and protected they will explore and do things they should NOT do. You completely misunderstand Ephesians 5:22. Where it clearly says wife’s submit to your Husband as unto the LORD. A Wife is not going to have a right relationship with God if she doesn’t obey the scriptures designed to make the marriage work. It’s just as important for the wife to do her part as it is for the husband to do his. Even if a person doesn’t like what the Bible has to say. You do it out of obedience to God. You do it out of fear of Gods wrath IF you don’t see Gods love in his design. I pray that you see the truth not in my words but in Gods word. For the apostle Paul also wrote “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” ‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬
