Your analysis here was spot on as always Nick! This was a really heartbreaking day for me. As a diehard fan of the Japanese team and a German national I had to go through two reverse sweeps and the shitshow of reffing that was France Vs Germany. I can't say that Italy and France don't deserve to be in the Semi's but I don't think Japan or Germany would have deserved it less. I have not been following Volleyball for very long (2 years) and this was the most invested I've ever been in two sports teams so I'm still processing these losses. I think it would have been easier to deal with if they would have traded sets or lost 1-3.

japan's middle blockers are too bad for this level imo. They didn't get single block point. Only 2 blocks from japan were from ran and nishida. And sekita became too predictable. All the other aspects were great for japan. Especially the defense of yamamoto, ran and nishida I was shocked at how well their defense was.

I was there for USA-Brazil ; a huge performance from US players who are practising a clinical Volley-ball with big self-confidence. Anderson and De Falco are amazing in all parts of the game. Brazil seems an aging team and they played on alternating current. Lucarelli, Flavio, Alan were above their teammates and Leal sadly leave the floor arguing with Bernardo Rezende. It feels like the end of an era for Brazil. Tomorrow, Italy-France: allez les Bleus! 🇫🇷

I suffered through Japan and Italy horribly. I stil think that Sekita distributed the ball so badly in the decisive moments and that was what made them lose :(

Poland is very serve dependent team. But now our the best oppisite is Bołądź who was only a reserve player. That might be a six quater final exit in a row...

Super excited but scared for the Japan vs Italy. I watched their last match in vnl last night and Italy really got the best defense. Sekita will play a big role. Ishikawa and Nishida will be in their radar and tried to disrupt them like what they did in ishikawa last match with the USA. Yamauchi is a good choice right now and maybe they can put Kai as well. Ran created a good defense at the back together with yamamoto.

I fully agree with your analysis about France-Slovenia referee. I was there and Giani used both challenges at the beginning of the tie-break. If the referee is sure on his judgement, there is no reason to ask for a referee challenge (he used one on the 3rd set and gave the point to France). If you listen to French people, Al Capone was the referee... 😂

what do you mean "no problem with the refereeing ???" for real, triple touch not called, it was shown multiple times in slow motion, Urnaut does a triple, the ball touch left hand, then right hand, then left forearm... And on another play the ball touched the ground, and he didnt called it either, all of that in the tie break around the 10 points, that's not a great match ! i've listened to many commentaries about these plays, and it's absolutely unanimous, the ref was wrong here, even british casters said it Even Cebulj hugged Ngapeth on this move because he knew that was an unfair call

Why didn't France challenge the floor touch right after the controversial reception by Urnaut?

I think that if that reception by urnaut is not a fault according to the rules, there might be a problem with them... it should not be legal to receive like that... I know you cant call double touch on the first touch, but it was so bad it should be point france...

Great review! I would like to point out how amazing Johannes Tille was against USA. First 2 sets Kampa was playing and germany got blocked countless times, then for the third Tille came on and instantly germany started scoring again. He is such an underrated setter, I really hope they start him against Argentina.
