The Bizarre Story of the Painting That Won't Go Away
Have you ever seen this kitsch fisherman painting? It may be in your parent’s apartment or in your grandparent’s house, especially if they live in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Germany, or The Netherlands. You may know it as "Fiskargubben" or "Fiskeren," if you're Scandinavian. Or else, you may have seen it on Yogscast.
An investigation by Sveriges Radio (Swedish broadcaster) tried to sort out who painted this work of art, who the portrait depicts, and how it spread so far and wide. In this video I talk about it all while trying to draw my own version.

Drawing And Trying Not To Hate It
Просмотров 633Месяц назад
I'm a mostly digital artist trying to reconnect with drawing and natural media art supplies. When looking at art, I often like the sketch more than the finished drawing or painting. When a piece looks too perfect, it becomes an unnecessary substitute for a photograph. I'm much more interested in human mark-making where drawing is its own language. Using Micron pens, Uni-ball Vision pens, and Ku...
The Swedish Snow Penis Saga

In Sweden, a crude drawing of a penis appears in the snow, and citizens get angry when the art is erased by a man who later regrets his good deed. He hatches a plan to make a much bigger snow penis to appease everyone. Later, snow penis sculptures mysteriously appear annually in a traffic circle in a small Swedish town. A Norwegian woman adds to the sexy festivities with a giant Christmas light...

ART: Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader sets sail from America, looking to cross the Atlantic ocean alone in a 13-foot boat. When he disappears, many people think he did it as a work of art. Theories spread, with some people arguing he is alive and well and living a new life in a new location, while others think he is dead and that his death is a perfect masterpiece. That makes good sense, and I think I may have thought along the same lines growing up - but then that logic blended with another “storyline” in my head where I knew that some of the paintings and drawings in my family were done by some “old uncle” my dad would mention, so I kind of thought this was one of those - until I saw it in friends’ houses too, at which point I can’t remember exactly what I thought. 😄

    I don't get why Disney didn't just go to trial anyway. Exhausting the finances of the defense is a much used tactic for these companies, after all. Is it because they had no way of suing outside of Scandinavia and that kind of behaviour would not work in the courts there?

    • @edlundart
      @edlundart 21 день назад

      Possibly, I’m not sure - but my impression is that it would be very bad PR for them in Scandinavia to throw their weight around. I think the artist’s move basically just signaled to them “Oh, man, he’s not gonna just lay down. Maybe it’s better to retreat.” This is just my speculation though.

    I don't like what Disney has become. I hate that they bought Pixar. Anyway, this conversation is about copyright, and I'm clearly not on this artist's side like you are. I put myself in Disney's shoes. If someone takes one of my characters that I created, I'd do the same thing. Just changing the beak doesn't make the character any different. The body is the same, the posture is the same. Then we have Donald Duck. The only thing that's different is the personality in parts, because Donald Duck is also quite grumpy, but he's not politically incorrect. And don't get me wrong, but taking a character and changing just the beak is still plagiarism in my view, of course, as an author. My characters are all original because I simply created them based on my daily life and not inspired by a character from a large corporation.

    First time watching one of your videos As a hobbyist who came to 'art' in my late 50s (about ten years ago) i'm often torn between 'should i learn to draw?' or 'should i do the digital thing?' i dabble in both - ballpoint pen and paper for most of my analogue stuff, and a bunch of different programs. When i pick up a pen i feel yeah, this is where i belong, i love the looseness of just making marks, not having to bother with all that 'snap-to-grid' crap and defining colors as hex codes; then i fire up a vector drawing program and think oh, wow, why don't I just do THIS all the time? (Focusing on one thing all the time would kill me; like i always say, i'm 100% focused on being a generalist.) Here in the uk we don't have those fire hydrants that you guys have dotted along the sidewalks (or pavements as we call them). I've always been fascinated by them. FWIW I thought all of your drawings were really cool. But yeah, that dark background didn't really do it for me either. When I saw you drawing the lights I thought they were chains; don't the hydrants have some sort of chain on them, to stop one of the caps getting separated from the main part? Anyway, one thing's for sure - I want those watercolor pens! Wishing you and your art all the best for the year ahead. Underrated channel. Subbed.

    • @edlundart
      @edlundart Месяц назад

      Hey, what a great comment! I am constantly doing that same cycle - when I do stuff digitally, I get pulled in by the precision allowed and my ability to endlessly refine what I'm doing until it is extremely competent work. And I love some of the things I can do in that realm, I love the very designed, sharp, slick things I can do with it. But then when I draw on paper, while it reveals my shortcomings in an uncomfortable way, it also just feels very free and loose, and it suggests to me a path forward that is more artful and more capable of showing personality and expression. But it's also kind of a messier process, I have to dig out my tools and put it all away, etc. You're right that my lights looked more like chains, and typically lights would not be so close together like that. I've seen some hydrants with chains, but I don't think they all have them. I have a similar fascination with hydrants, they were just objects in cartoons when I was a little kid growing up in Norway. Same thing with American mailboxes and so on. It sounds like we are both "100% focused on being a generalist" - that's well said. I enjoy so many different creative things, which I hope will keep getting clearer as I make more videos. Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing! And, happy holidays and a happy new year to you.

      @@edlundart yes, 'precision', with regard to digital, exactly right - and of course the ability to undo and redo (although that can certainly feel like a trap); i'll be doing something with a ballpoint pen and think 'mmm, where's the CTRL-Z on this thing?' but on balance i love the fact that i can't undo with analogue; no mistakes - just happy accidents :-)
