How to crochet Battenberg stitch - Checkmate Unisex Scarf
Просмотров 2563 года назад
Introducing the Checkmate Unisex Scarf crochet pattern! Here's the secret to this stitch: you work chains and block of trebles (US doubles), a bit like the stitch in traditional granny squares, but then on the next row you work into the stitches below (not just into in the spaces). The effect is to close any gaps and create a soft, solid fabric that looks woven. Using three colours means you ca...

Thank you so much this was so clear and just soothing to hear! 😊
Thank you! Delighted you like the demo - and found it soothing - thank you! 😊
So you don’t need a hoop to embroider on knit wear?
@@migueloros891 Working on these small gloves I wouldn't use a hoop. Maybe on some bigger projects, but in general I prefer not to use a hoop on knitwear - I can see the way the fabric sits better without 👍
so helpful thank you
@@isharobbie4960 oh I'm delighted to hear that - thanks!
Thank you, so well explained x
Thank you so much for this, your voice is so soothing and lovely ❤️
@@TheNemo1010 thank you so much for watching! I'm delighted 😊
Thanks , I've crocheted for 50 years, I never managed to learn this.
Hi love your videos subscribed and saved for future reference. I am wondering what a half double crochet 2 together is... is it the double crochet 2 together you show on this video ? Or another stitch. Its in a hat pattern as HDC2tog US. Louisa
@@louisaflaxman2861 when you make stitches together, you're holding back the last part of each stitch, before finishing both together. In the case of 2hdcTog = yarn over, insert hook and draw up a loop (3loops), then yarn over again, insert hook and draw up a loop (5loops), then yarn over and draw through all 5 loops. General this would take place over 2 separate stitches (to decrease) but of course it depends on the pattern. I hope that helps?
Brilluant simple and easy to follow watched all your UK and US now for the first time feel I can follow a pattern. Thank you ❤
@@louisaflaxman2861 ah that's so good to hear, thank you! I'm thrilled to know it's helped you enjoy crochet. You've made my day!
And today I learned that I've been crocheting "in American" since I learned years ago (from RUclips of course!). This was a brilliant video and very clear, but I now have a real challenge ahead to convert what I've always done!! Stupid question, but how do you know if a pattern uses UK or USA terms? Does it tell you?
@@piggysister01 that's a great question! There are a few ways to tell if it's an American pattern. First of all, if you see SC, then it's American. That means Single Crochet which we don't have in the UK. Then, if it says "Ch3 (counts as first dc)" it's also American. In the UK, Ch3 would count as a treble. Also, in American crochet terms, they tend to write "slip st" for a slip stitch. In the UK we would write ss, although this might not be as reliable a guide as the other two ways above. Thanks for such a great question! USA terms converted into UK terms sc = double crochet dc = treble hdc = half treble crochet tr = double treble
@@piggysister01 Also, I have a video of the same stitches in USA terms so that you can see and here them in the way you're used to ruclips.net/video/-Bs8Fbcu5HU/видео.htmlsi=6VbEfkC6tPPnAhZV Hope that helps!
thank you very much, i have a project that uses this stich and had no idea how to do it lol
@@rayanearaujo52 oh I hope it helps you make your project. Happy crocheting!
<you make it look easy😊. Thanks
@@zulalyles6096 ah I know it's tricky to manage so many twizzles at once! A matter of practice. An alternative to the magic ring is to Ch4 and join with a slip stitch to firm a ring, then work over the tail as you go. At the end you can pull the tail and the ring closes. Not quite as neat but crochet should be fun above all! Thanks for watching ☺️🙏
Hi ! What is the equivalent of double knitting baby yarn - in USA ? Is 2-ply ? I bought a baby blanket pattern but I’m a beginner, help
@@sabrinarojas4052 Hi Sabrina, double knitting yarn is Light#3 in the US. I hope that helps!
Thank you for the very clear explanation and video, Nancy
@@MartaMcGillivray thanks very much for saying so Marta, I hope you find it useful 😃
Thank you. I did crochet this way, without realising. Due to neurological problems I could not hold my left finger up,so started doing this. Ism following your videos and as you don't hold your finger up, I have been able to follow
Thank you Nina! I really love how you explain the function and the theory behind the use of different stitches. It is really helpful to me as I prefer to create things as I go along rather than follow patterns. I’d love to see more crochet "theory" videos like this
Please how do you start it on the row?
Hi, it would depend on the particular pattern, but in this case I started with: Ch4 (counts as first stitch and 1chain), skip next stitch, work 1cluster into the next stitch (= 3rd stitch along), *ch1, skip next st, 1Cl into next stitch; repeat from * across, ending with skip1, ch1, 1tr into last stitch. NB. tr is UK terms. In USA terms that would be 1dc On every other row I would work a row of double crochets (= US single crochets) as follows: Ch1(does not count as st), 1dc into very first st, *1dc into next ch1-space, 1dc into top of next Cluster; rep from * to end, ending with 1dc into 3rd of beg-4ch. The pattern is worked over an odd number of stitches. I hope this helps
Timestamps for anyone like me who had to keep going back over parts. Thank you for the video! Really helpful! 0:10 The Chain 0:25 Slip Stitch 0:51 Double Crochet 1:18 Half Treble Crochet 1:50 Full Treble Crochet
@@halfpintmcbee2690 oh thanks for adding those in! I'm sure other learners will be so grateful! ☺️🙏
Just bought my first pattern and it has UK terms. This helped me immediately figure it out and was so clear and concise. Many many thanks.
Ah that's great to hear Emma - thank you! Onwards and upwards!
I’m in the US but crochet Using UK terms. I have found some UK channels that use US terms. So confusing! Thank you for your wonderful tutorial.
Ah thank you! I'm delighted to know it's helping! 🙏😊
I might try this. Regular crochet has too much twisting and turning so it hurts my wrists.
Yes you're right about that. Hopefully this method will help you enjoy crochet more. Crochet is also handy to embellish your knitwear, add detail around cuffs or to add a button band etc. let me know how it works out for you!
Well I’ve been crocheting very happily now for the past month. This has been a game changer. I’m thrilled. I find crocheting tend to go much faster than knitting so I can churn out many more baby hats for donation. Thank you so much for showing us how.
@@knittingknut oh I'm thrilled to hear this! Well done for trying it. Amazing how one video can change everything. Woohoo!! 🙌
What is the stitch below that your doing the clusters into ... Many thanks ..
Hello! I'm working into a row of UKdc. The row before that was a row of UKtr. Thanks for watching 🙏
Brill! Thank you!
Hope it helps Linda!
Thank you. This was very clear and helpful, Nina.
Oh I'm delighted to hear that Regina - thanks so much for your feedback! 🙏 Happy crocheting! X
This is how I started crochet but my aunty said it was weird 😅 so I stoped will go back to it now ❤
Whatever keeps you crocheting Sally! Whatever it takes! Such a beautiful skill. Thank you for crocheting! xx
Amazing video, I've watched alot and this is the first one makes complete sense. Thank you ❤ also lovely to see an English tutorial I'm getting confused with the English and American terms especially seing as I live in England.
Ah I'm so glad to hear that, thank you! And yes, try to stick to just one terminology while you're learning the stitches. Then suddenly it'll all click! Keep in touch! And thanks again for your feedback. Very encouraging 🙏❤️
Thank you I love it so easy❤
Thanks so much Trisha! I'm glad you like the video. I love embroidery - in fact, I must do more for spring. Happy crafting!
Thank you very much. At last an English tutorial for me.
I hope it was useful Rosaline! Thanks for your comment 🙏
this was super easy and very clear thank you so much !! going to be using this for a scarf 🥰
Oh I'm delighted to hear that! It'll make a lovely scarf. May I recommend you make it longways - I have a feeling it might drape better. Good luck!

I'm so glad your video popped up in my feed, it's great!!! had to subscribe!!
Thanks very much Wendy! I hope some of them are useful! I appreciate your subscription!

@@wendygale4808 thank you! Yes, feel free to share 🌟
So does that mean the slip stitch is a single crochet in the uk
Hi Jayde, a slip stitch is the same in both UK and US terms. The US single crochet is called double crochet in the UK
Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you! I hope it helps!
Great instructions, thanks a lot. Can you please tell me how you did the cast off, how come the work didn't turn although it's jersey stitch?
Hi Samira, thank you. The gloves are crocheted using Waistcoat Stitch so there's no need to cast off. You can watch the video tutorial for Waistcoat Stitch here ruclips.net/video/d7vCkBZYBrI/видео.htmlsi=HkDfuNj1B5UCXzmP I hope that helps!

That’s beautiful. 👏 🧶 How many did you chain? Seems like the perfect length. :-)
Thanks Nancy! I chained 166 with a G6/4mm crochet hook using approx 200g of 4ply/sport weight yarn in assorted colours. Hope you give it a go! Do you have a video tutorial for the ribbons that go through the mesh?

Thank you so much 💓
You're very welcome! I hope you give it a go! Happy embroidering!
This is me. Trying to crochet has always been so impossible for me, my left hand never knows what to do! But as a right hand crocheter my coordination is totally manageable. 😊🧣🧶
Do you crochet like this video then Susan? Whatever gets you to the end result!
@@nancysaid9193 Hi Nancy, yes, I'm a visual learner so when I found it difficult to follow the written pattern I searched here because I knew you would have my answer 😊 Once I followed you it all became so much easier for me. Have you ever thought of making a whole instructional film that's only available to your pattern purchasing customers? I bet you would would gain so many more buyers knowing there's a whole visual aid too. There's a lot of us out here ... 🤓
@@SusanRoseArt it's a great idea Susan and I'd love to. It's just that video making is a while different discipline and I haven't found a way to speed up the process yet. I add video links inside many of my patterns to help with any tricky parts, and try to keep the rest of the pattern as easy as possible. Usually once you get over the first few rows, you can find a rhythm. Thank you so very much for all your interest and this excellent idea. You never know, you might have got me thinking....! I appreciate you!
Thank you for this invaluable tutorial
You're very welcome Rosemary! I hope it opens new doors for you!
The beginning of video wasn't there but then said 1row repeat so I caught on. This looks like a fun stitch to add to my blankets!
Ahh look at your beautiful cat😍😍
Thanks Sarah! Sadly not my cat though. This is Houdini. He's really clever and affectionate. I wanted to take him home!
I knew you’d come over to my way of thinking eventually 😂
Haha! 😁👌❤
Thank you. Very interesting xx
Thanks Susan. Hope you find somewhere to add it to!
This was very helpful! I just started crocheting yesterday and was getting frustrated with the ends and starting a new row, it all looked so uneven! But your video has helped me see where I was going wrong. Thank you so much! I look forward to watching more of your tutorials and learning from you!
These are just darling, thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much @momscat6! I'm glad you like them!
Ah I love your voice/accent, it reminds me so much of watching Jenny Bristow as a kid! Thanks for the tutorial, I'm hoping to embroider some details onto a knitted vest for autumn 🍂
Great idea! I did the same on a store-bought vest top, using fine mohair and pearls. It turned out well. I hope it still fits me this year...! Happy embroidering! Thanks for your comment. I remember Jenny Bristow!
So beautiful!!
Thanks Lavelda! Nice and colourful to bring us joy!
