I was diagnosed in 1998 while attending `SUNY Stony Brook physician assistant program. Having always had perfect 20/20 vision and no need for glasses, I found myself struggling with lessons where the blackboard was used. I saw an ophthalmologist explaining what was going on with my vision and was promptly told in a superior type voice that ‘of course your vision is getting worse. You are a 42 yo woman. I almost left this very smug eye doctors office, but my time was almost always used up by didactic classes in first year. It was only after he started to examine my eyes that he said, ‘oh…you have Fuch’s Corneal Dystrophy. I knew nothing about this diagnosis. He told me it was inherited and eventually I would need a corneal transplant to restore my vision as close to what it was pre- diagnosis. I have many aunts, uncles, cousins, and 2nd and 3rd familial possibilities of who else had this diagnosis. My search was futile. No one had any eye disorder other than cataracts at a later age. One aunt had macular degeneration but that was it. As time went on, I occasionally would send out emails, letters to those familial relatives with no one having any issue with their sight. In 2024, my oldest cousin sent out an email basically wanting to know if anyone had this eye disorder called Fuch’s corneal dystrophy. She had been included in every email, message I sent out prior. She was 10 years older than me, and it was all like ‘Latin’ to her. I wrote her and said, yes I have it. Diagnosed in ‘98 and getting ready for a transplant of cornea and cataract removal. So, now I know it is from my paternal side of my family. It makes sense about gender effected most is female as she and I are the only female cousins. Lots of guys. Thank you for writing and releasing this information. I

Hi Doc. Hope u r fine. Very in good presentation on corneal transplant. Sir/ Ma'am I had DMEK on 25 Jan 2022. Still my vision is not clear. It improves during the day a little bit but no vision next morning again. I am using Pred Forte, 5% Saline, Hisopt, and Vigamox. My eye surgeon claims that my graft is perfect. Then why it is not improving vision. Pl suggest any change in drops.

See your doctor! Get a second opinion. Ask a lot of questions. You might have an infection. I had a resident doctor tell me that he was not a fan of Muro drops! Then he said to not use artificial tears after cataract surgery :(
