The encoder wheel can come lose and or fall off. It and its screw and washer can usually be found somewhere behind the plastic cover in the lower part of the assembly. Would be advisable to lay a towel beneath it so the screw doesn't fall down in the plotter. if the screw and washer can't be found you can use one of the three screws from the cover.

This is how normal well used purge unit absorbers should look. If they are dirty, gunky, or even swollen then the purge unit should be cleaned or replaced. If absorber pads are just gunky you may be ok with removing them and cleaning in the sink with cold water. Remember to make sure the cups are clean and the little black rubber tabs are on top of absorbers after reinstalling.
