    Thank you very much. I've been teaching this smart 10-year-old student (ESL) for two years now. I just realized that she could be dyslexic. It has been hard for her to read simple digraphs until now. I've almost given up. I never had any experience wtih dyslexic students. Her speaking skill as well as comprehension is amazing, but her problem is reading.

    I home school and the things you mentioned are what my child does, I will try and get back to you on this. Is this common behavior for a 4th grader, and does anyone who has a child in this grade that fights with you on it? My son does all the basics of writing, I just cant get him to stick with it.

    • @allthewritecolors
      @allthewritecolors 4 дня назад

      Yes, I’ve worked with a lot of fourth graders who have been reluctant. My theory is because they’ve felt deflated on their creativity and dislike the multiple years experiencing the “school” way of writing.

    8 and older, I believe something is lacking in the teaching system because I am not that old and this was only being taught to a select few who needed extra help with reading and writing but 8 and older could be something a bit worse than a little confusion. But then again this is how I was taught to think 😂😂😂...I'm from the birth of the child mental illness era 😅.

      I’m so sorry. For some kids with dyslexia, adhd can impact their long term memory so accessing the sounds may be difficult until the adhd part is treated. See if you can find a dyslexia teacher in your area that will do hands on, explicit lessons either your kiddo.

    My son has trouble with blending. He has adhd and struggles with recall. He knows his sounds but even at age 9 he can't blend well at all. He can "read" because he has memorized words through repeated exposure but he can not blend sounds which is obviously a problem but we've had some improvement using the Handbook for Reading from Abeka and their my blends book. However we do have to drill over and over and over for days before he retains it. I've never thought about having him keep his mouth open after a vowel though. I'll have to try that on Monday.

      It’s okay, he may not developmentally be ready or he’s struggling with spelling. Either way, when it comes to developing story, scribe for him so he can orally write his story and free his mind of all his wonderful ideas. Then work on spelling or fine motor skills on the side.

    • @allthewritecolors
      @allthewritecolors 8 месяцев назад

      I’m glad you enjoy the video!! I would keep math very hands on, and money focused or whatever interest they have….teach math using that topic. For writing, I would have them talk out the story and you scribe, for now. And have the write a book on a topic or character they would love. Don’t make them write about a topic you come up with, it can shut the motivation down.
