20$ 70-200mm lens for BMPCC OG (and any mirrorless camera, really)
I bought this 20$ lens out of curiosity and to test would this focal length be usable with OG BMPCC. Turned out it isn't bad at all and I had a lot of fun with this inexpensive glass. Of course, it has some quirks and I will tell you about them in this video.

What would happen if you choose the worst settings on BMPCC OG?
Просмотров 5 тыс.Месяц назад
The best setting for shooting with BMPCC OG are well-established, but what would happen if you choose the worst possible settings that give you the least dynamic range and no room for correction in post? Would this camera still have its magic, or the footage will look like it came from an old camcorder? Let's find out!
First test reel with 16mm film - Fomapan 100R 16mm Arri 16s

Shooting film is absolutely unique experience and I'm glad that I tried it. The only problem that it is very hard to go back to digital now :) I was very worried that I will mess up the exposure or that this film stock will be very difficult to shoot with because of it reversal nature. But turned out it isn't that hard or scary. It requires some skill of course, but nothing extremely complicated.
Went out to capture light sea storm with my OG BMPCC + Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (shot mostly at f5.6+)

When I saw that sky is getting darker and the wind is getting stronger I decided to go to the sea and film some rocks and waves. I knew that it would be kinda wet and uncomfortable, but I underestimated to what degree. Water. Water everywhere. It pours from above, it strikes your from the side, it splashes underneath, it gets in your face blocking your vision and it tries to crawl under your cl...
Elusive Calm with BMPCC OG + Sigma 17-50 f2.8

I love to shoot with OG BMPCC, but usually I did it in barebones configuration and for personal projects. Now I have an idea to use it as a main camera for bigger and more complex shoots. So I put it in the rig and decided to run several tests before going all-in. This sequence is one of them. The rig consists of Wooden Camera half-cage, SmallRig battery plate, Shinobi 5’’ monitor, a bunch of N...
One of the worst lenses ever made. One of my favorite to film with. Fujian 25mm f1.4 (plus BMPCC OG)

Best equipment is not always the newest, highest-quality and most expensive. Sometimes it just suits the situation or allows you to achieve specific mood. Technically this lens is awful, but I really love it. It has a unique look, tons of quirks and 1.4 aperture. Oh, and a very low price. This is Fujian (or just no-name CCTV) 25mm f1.4. Paired with original BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera it ca...

damn i have this one and i love it on my G85! it just has such a dreamy look and is surprisingly sharp in the middle (at least on my one :D )

Is this footage uprezed?
It's edited on 4k timeline and rendered in 4k to avoid YT compression , but I didn't use any superscale in Resolve
60Mbs per second? R U Serious. Talk about serious bloat. I don't need that kind of bloat. Most of my 1080p music videos after fully rendered and uploaded to youtube... the entire video of 2 minutes... takes 60MBs. These camera reviewers need to focus more on 1080p, because it's what most everybody on the internet is going to upload to RUclips. Can you upload higher resolutions? Sure. Is anybody going to watch anything higher than 360p on their smart phone over a cellular connection. No. 2K or 4K? Forget it. 99.99% of people are not shooting to make a film to go in an IMAX movie theatre. I've made 500 video uploads to RUclips... and I've never color graded a single one, and I have no particular interest in starting. My cheap goodwill monitors aren't even color calibrated. That's the street reality.
I have one that’s very similar on my micro camera. I love the combo. Gets so great long range shots.
for $20 this lens has a lot of character. great find
for 20 dollars, it's a great lens and you used it well ; what's your monitor (that we see in your video?)
Thanks! It's Atomos Shinobi 5
great info
Great video. Excellent info regarding the artifacts in the proxy footage. Thanks for sharing.
I’m thinking of selling both of my OGs but then i watch stuff like this and I’m like ill keep it just in case lol
got 50mm Canon FD and using it on BMPCC4K - loving every bit of the shooting process also got Promaster MC 28mm f/2.8, but that one is too dark for my liking and it's easier for me to just use Lumix 24mm f/1.8, so it's just collecting dust :D had same issue with Fotga FD-MFT adapter, switched to K&F Concept one, their adapter is solid like hell
this nudges me to find and buy BMPCC OG as addition to my Pocket 4K as "travel and everyday camera"
After all these years I still use my bmpcc 4k and it still amuses me with the images it spits out
lmao, seen your post on reddit and saved it to come back later and watch the video what do I see on my front page of YT 10 minutes later? you're goddamn right, this exact video :D nice curious bit of "funfact" information that is othervise useless, love this type of stuff (genuinely, no sarcasm here, I'm just as stupidly curious person)
Ha-ha, you're welcome!
This matches my experience back in the day. LT was compact but imperceptibly lossless compared to HQ for simple grades. However, a real torture test would have been to turn the ISO up to 1600, because that brings more noise into the mid-tones and shadows. The proxy codec would fail much worse, because that noise becomes extra details that it can't handle. LT still works ok though.
Yeah, LT is the lowest I would go personally.
Whats the difference between record on film or video setting? Thanks ❤
On RAW, no difference. But on pro-res, it will dictate which color profile gets saved to the video. Film saves the log profile for post-production grading. Looks grey and bland but you can grade however you want. Video saves the Rec709, which is more usable without editing (has decent contrast and saturation), but has less room to play and tweak.
Yes, to simplify what @axelfoley133 said - Film is a Log profile, flat and desaturated giving you the most range and flexibility in post. Video is graded, meant for delivery straight out of camera or with as little tweaking as possible. In RAW you have no other options, but to shoot with Film profile. In ProRes you can choose.
Thanks :3
This lens is supposed to be used in CCTV cameras with tiny sensors (1/2.3"), larger sensor like APSC result in a lack of sharpness on the periphery as expected. But there is an upgraded and more expensive version of these lenses for APSC cameras, You should try it. I think this lens should work fine in systems like pentax Q that I'd like to tested.
It's rated for for larger than that, about 2/3".
its magical
Amazing I have this lense (and the 35mm) sitting on a shelf next to Angenieux etc. They came in a bundle of stuff and never paid attention to them. Thank you for making me aware of thier potential.
cross posted to FB group on C mount lenses. Good work!
I thought I was the only one to ever put this on a bmpcc og but obviously I am not
Можно по русски уже говорить
thanks for making this! i like weird lenses
I have the 35mm, and it is also terrible. But its terrible in it's own unique way, which makes it interesting.
please let me know adapter you used :)
Looks great!
love it, you like danger too :)
beautiful framing !!!
Amazing film registration 👏👏
Thanks! But this footage was stabilized in post. Straight from the scanner it had a lot of up and down movement, but very little from side to side. I'm yet not sure was it a problem with camera, with scanning process or with film stock itself
Hi , I Like it so much, how do you stabilized ? thanks@@iamlookingatyouthroughtheglass
Hi! With Davinci Resolve's built-in stabilizer
Beautiful! I'd happily watch an entire feature film shot on this stock. Everything immediately gains significance. Except for one shot where the focus is off (it happens to the finest cinematographers with film) at 0:32 - it's very well framed and exposed.
Thanks! Yeah, it's quite challenging to focus at f1.5 in the shade with tiny viewfinder. It looked sharper in person
@@iamlookingatyouthroughtheglass Don't ask me how many times I messed up focus, even though it looked pin sharp in the view finder and everything (ground glass, back focus) was correctly aligned. At f/1.5 it must have looked very dark in the viewfinder. In a feature film with some kind of budget you have time to tape-measure focus in smaller spaces. No such luck with run and gun documentary style filming. Oh - and now with great 4K scans you can clearly see how many times focus is off even in top notch feature films. It's mostly close-ups with very shallow DoF where the actor didn't hit the mark correctly and for example the ears are in focus, but not the eyes, or worse: a foreground or background object is in focus. I guess sometimes the nervous director made a last minute change on the fly and the camera operator and focus puller were unable to keep track.
Love it : )
Beautiful
Nice!
This is the best footage I have seen shot on this stock. I really like it, and hope you do more like this. Was this processed as Reversal or Negative?
Hi! Thanks you for such kind words. It was processed as Reversal, so I have a reel of positive images. Developing and scanning was done by Mutascan in Finland
Beautiful! You said it requires skill, but didn't say what : (
Very likely since you don't have in-camera light metering and no monitor to show the final result. You can use a digital camera to measure reflected light or a classic incidental light meter for incoming light (so a white wall for example stays white and will not turn gray). 0:24 - these kind of shots require the most work. You have a darker interior and a very bright exterior. If you measure for the interior (where your attention is), the exterior will blow completely, so you'll have to underexpose a bit.
@@truefilm6991 Thanks yeah that balance will definitely come after experimenting. I would want to expose for the highlights if they're important, or otherwise allow them to blow out that i can "fix" with diffusion filter, haze, smoke or light curtains, but indoors i would guess the lighting will help. Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@DethronerX exactly. It's basically: with film you are fully aware of the lighting and the latitude of your film, including grain structure and overall texture - with digital you rely a lot on software. Lenses and framing are the same of course, except perhaps that you can have a lot of grids and lines overlaid in a digital camera viewfinder/monitor. I doubt that this leads to much better results. The great masters came up with absolutely pristine camera work using old rack-over Mitchell cameras in the 1930s. And yeah, it must hurt going back to digital. Film is simply beautiful.
Guess in reversal film you more likely to expose for the highlight rather then the shadow.. Right?
Well, that's definitely an option. The amount of details that you can pull from shadows on reversal film is surprising. But I mostly exposed for middle-gray and even for shadows in the couple of shots.
Very colorful.. Love it! I thought reversal film are less dynamic, I was wrong
beautiful!
Beautiful
it looks so good!
👋🏼hi I wonder if it fits to my canon 600d? This is not a mirrorless camera. I’m not sure if it’s even possible to use this lens on canon eos. If somebody knows something about it please reply, thx🫶🏼
Hi! Unfortunately not. Even if you manage to do some sort of DIY adapter, the lens will be too far from the sensor (because of the mirror between them). So it only will work as a macro lens, focusing on objects maximum couple of centimeters away. But it is possible to adapt this lens to EOS M and R series cameras
@@iamlookingatyouthroughtheglass thanks for your answer, I guessed about this, but hopped there is a way 😂
wow, that's really cool, and glad i found your thoughts on the 17-50mm, very helpful. quick question, what do you mean by ''glassless adapter'', I just googled that but found only car parts... if you have a reference or link, i'd really appreciate it, thx a lot
Hi! Basically there are two types of adapters to put EF glass on MFT cameras. One has a lens and usually called "speedbooster", because it makes image one stop brighter and also gives you wider field of view (for example one from Metabones - www.metabones.com/products/details/mb_spef-m43-bm1). And the second type is just an adapter, so basically a barrel with contact points (like this one - www.metabones.com/products/details/mb_ef-m43-bt2). It has no glass in its construction, hence I called it "glassless".
@@iamlookingatyouthroughtheglasshello, i liked your answer but never took the Time to reply and thank you for the detailed answer. ❤❤❤. Cheers
Looks better than my stuff now on the bmpcc4k !
Bro can u help me with color grading tips
Sure. I'll probably will make a video about my process, but feel free to ask questions
@@iamlookingatyouthroughtheglass I need to know if my lens is affecting my ability to grade it correctly. I bought a used one. I’m willing to pay a small fee. Can I email you the clip and see how the colors turn out for you? I need to know where I’m going wrong bc I have a big shoot to edit thanks in advance
@@dangershotz of course, send me files to iamlookingatyouthroughtheglass@gmail.com with all the info about the lens and camera model/settings

Was a speed booster used for the fd lenses, or just a regular adapter?
No, just a regular adapter
Nice
Thanks!
Beautiful, and the colors are nice too! Subscribed and waiting for new videos :)

Que bom que você gostou! Bem-vindo!
To me is kinda weird why you say people does not like this lense. To me the footage looks very interesting. I can see that you used a pocket cinema camera and this is also a point. However it may look good on other cameras as well. I like the picture that it give this lense.
