Welcome to the 3speed RUclips channel! I film elevators. Occasionally, I do full elevator tours of buildings that I think are interesting enough to warrant it.
49 Empty Floors | Exploring the Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel | Cincinnati, OH
The Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel opened in 1931 and are part of a large complex containing offices, a hotel, shops, and restaurants. The restaurants and shops have been vacant for a long time, and many of the offices are no longer occupied. As a matter of fact, the Carew Tower, which stands at 49 stories and 574ft (175m), is being completely converted from offices into apartments. There was a third 28 story parking garage tower that was demolished in 1980. Both the Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza are known for their stunning Art Deco interiors, and both are on the national register of historic places.

This is the extremely small shuttle elevator that serves levels 45-48 at the Carew Tower in Cincinnati, OH. It was mainly used by people visiting the observation deck on floor 49. This elevator is traction, with the motor room being located up on floor 49. It's also probably original to the building, as original building plans show an elevator here.

It features 4 Dover elevators. The 2 internal elevators have already been modded by ThyssenKrupp. These have been in the process of getting modded for several months, yet the indicators and some of the butt...

I didn’t know Westinghouse made elevators and I lived in NYC for more than 35 years.
Yeah they did! Their elevator division was huge and lasted from 1928 until 1989 when it was acquired by Schindler.
So yea, there’s nothing worth saving on the inside. Good candidate for gut renovation into apartments or hotel rooms. Or offices. All three at the same time.
A few people seem to be interested in the fact that a good portion of this video consists of me riding elevators. I understand that it's not for everyone, but I invite you to look at the other videos on this channel; you may see a common theme!
Almost looks like a dinning room inside the Queen Mary
If you are referring to the Pavilion Room, it was actually modeled after Club Leviathan on the S.S. Leviathan! The round oval shaped cutouts in the wall were deigned to look like portholes on a ship.
dude you got serious obsession with elevators lmao be man a climb the 48 flights of stairs then we will be impressed
They used to have an event every year where you could climb the stairs to the top to raise money for the American Lung Association! Here's a video: ruclips.net/video/F5kya1DUf_A/видео.html
damn good place for squatters
So are you trespassing?
The U.S. has the greatest collection of Art Deco buildings in the World. The sad part is that they are situated in downtown areas that have declined over the years. Converting part of the building into apartments is a good move to help bring life back to these often near deserted places.
These upper floors require an access code. You have to hit certain buttons in order to get the upper floors to unlock. It is a security measure. The way the buttons are blinking. It is expecting you to hit them in a certain order to unlock the upper floors.
They need to salvage as much of the interior of the upper floors as they can. They’ll leave the mailbox chutes in place; but there’s a bunch of doors that can be reused elsewhere. And some signage, leftover furniture, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, bookcases and staircases. And some of the elevator parts if they decide to do another mod to all of the banks.
Beautiful Westinghouse dinner bell
That hotel will stay a hotel.
Why do you say? Look at the Plaza Hotel, the Waldorf. Now just empty spaces with multi million dollar apartments. Once employing thousands.
Definitely a haunted vibe to it with some floors a LOT more than the others. I would have loved to see what the 28 story parking garage looked like!
Same! There’s only a few photos of it. If you search “Carew Netherland Garage,” you can find some images of it along with the other 2 towers.
Have many fond memories of this gem of a skyscraper. This building is truly the definition of art deco splendor and elegance. I spent many summers in Cincinnati and to go to the top of The Carew Tower observation deck was a treat! Stunning views of this amazing city. Whatever is done with this building, I hope the public areas are maintained at least. As a footnote, it certainly would be fantastic to live here!
Totally agree about the public areas.
DEAR LORD, this building and all those eerie noises scare the bejesus out of me!!!!!😨
Especially the wind howling away in the elevator shafts!
Great video, I so enjoyed seeing these lovely buildings and knowing the Carew building will become residential. Well done guys.
@@brettster3331 At least they're gonna do a respectable job on the project and they're going to preserve as much of the historical stuff as possible. It had a great legacy as an office building but now it has a new life with people living in it. Something like this building they will never ever ever build again
Stupid worthless vid
That would make a great swingers club
I like the lighting in these
I grew up in Ft. Thomas, Ky., just southeast of downtown . I could see the skyline from my upstairs bedroom window,. My best friend and I would go to the top of the Carew Tower at any time of the year. I was even up there in the snow, back in the 70's! It's a wonderful place. Check it out. The tower is a Deco masterpiece and the Netherland was magnificent! And now it's trashed?
That’s awesome you got to see it back in the 70s! I imagine not much has changed since then, especially in the office areas. It’s only trashed because the interior is being gutted in order to convert the building into apartments and condos.
Never use an elevator in an abandoned building SO Stupid !!
Is this the tallest Best Western out there?
It’s very possible!
No context isn't helpful
How did i get here
The stairway fire door on floor 6 should not be propped open. That is illegal.
You lost me in the elevators as you are going up down up down I said goodbye
Although that is clearly in need of maint. PRE-OPENING (not classic) used to be a common thing. In busy offices, it shaved time off of each stop. In the 60s and early 70s, it was commonplace in most highrises. Unfortunately, this generation considers it DANGEROUS. Sorta like old fans with minimal guards. Never remember any friend missing fingers tho. Different times.
What a boring video. First 6 minutes is riding the same elevator between the same two floors. Watched until minute 15, but the filming is so manic it never lands on or focuses on anything. Even the skyline view towards the Ohio River you see for two seconds and then he’s running to get back to his favorite part: riding an elevator.
Love the wind noise near the hatches. The old tower speaks softly
Nice hatch views, another great video.....likely an old Compute-amatic
Wish you had been around to ride some of the elevators of Cincy, when I was young. There were the Haughton's at the old Sheraton Gibson. I rode on top of the Dovers at the Sharonville Marriot, and the Autotronics over at the old Terrace Hilton. All I had back then was an 8mm movie camera. :( A mechanic gave my snoopy-ass a tour of the Gibson's Haughton machines....and gave me a hall call plate.....I still have it
That’s awesome! Always looking for some older stuff to film. There’s some original Lexans up on the UC Medical campus in Ridgeway Tower.
@3speed827 You know that whole complex was Selectomatics. So was Shillito's. Was a fun town way back!
I practically grew up riding those .westinghouses....always wondered what the machines looked like, What a great video, one of the best machine room/car videos I've seen, with out stupid commentary! Secondary sheave, and governor level, too cool. Thanks for your work, otherwise would never get to see those machnes.
I also always wondered what the machines looked like. I was very lucky!
Also will add that I’ve been in the former mall and the Carew Tower with my grandmother when she had meetings sometimes
Wonder when the conversion will be complete?
They seem to be done with the exterior work, so they’ll probably move inside.
Man O Man this fella is bound to get $tuck in an elevator.
Goddamn, graphics are getting so real. When is the game coming out? /s Edit: in all seriousness, im almost 20 minutes in, and its mostly been elevator rides. Gonna have to move on.
Stellar video!
Excited to watch this video. I remember coming here and visiting the observatory many years ago.
While internal unlike other Hyatt Regency elevators, these stand out because of their indicator voice!
This is great to see some newer elevators that are glass. Nobody goes with glass anymore, and not even elevator companies are allowing their models to have a scenic option anymore!! Architects have no sense in scenic designs, just plain old wood & drywall. So these are quite nice to see.
You went up there when the observation deck was closed, but you didn’t go out there. That whole tower (except for the middle floors between levels 3 and 45; and 49) was open during construction. That elevator goes 150 FPM; the others go 500 (low rise) & 1000 (high rise).
Adams/EPCO and Innovation.
A few years ago, they closed the rooftop observation deck, 2 years ago, they started to convert this tower from office space to apartments. Glad you made it in there during the construction. These elevators might get modded again sometime soon. Please get some of the elevator parts. The connecting hotel is staying as is.
Yeah I wanted to document them before they're gone. I have a detailed exploration video coming out soon about this building so stay tuned!

its amazing no gaurd threw you out, id imagine they atleast have one guard. and if anyone was in the operations office on the 6th floor they would see somewon playin with elevator
Bro
Never go in that elevator
I remember riding these elevators when I was a kid but they haven’t changed since I been there. Really great elevators.
I also remember riding them as a kid!I They still run great but I wonder if a modernization is in the near future.
@@3speed827are these hydraulics?
Yes, I believe they are all holeless hydraulics.
Wow awesome find! I wished you would have tested out that IU and ID button. Especially at the first stop where it overleveled just slightly. The ID button should have caused it to "Inch Down" where you could make it level. Again...very awesome find!
Thanks! A service door happened to be open and I saw it sitting with its doors open. I had no idea where it would open up and I wasn’t trying to get caught!
Clearly this elevator needs a modernization
