Effortless downwind surfing!
Ebbing River Delta Jan 24 2025
There was supposed to be more wind today but another low teen day. The first half of the run the waves are visually easy to read but the second half they are not visually easy to read which makes it the best practice.

Nice sunny day at the delta. Not much wind but the ebbing river and lower tide were working to create some waves. I hit 8 mph into the waves at one point. 40 F air temp and 40 F water temp.

Too much wind for laps. No video from the first upwind just past the island. To windy to even turn on the camera. should have done a downwind from Tulalip Bay.

I saw an otter loping along the beach but didn't get my camera turned on quite soon enough. Looked like a river otter. I attended Otter Creek Junior High School now Middle School in North Terre Haute Indiana. GO OTTERS !

Kayak Point wind direction switch. I paddled south into decent sized waves but 10 minutes before I turned around the wind let up. Not much to work with on the downwind and halfway back I was paddling into the wind. The wind had gone from S to WNW. I tried another short south lap near the pier but still nothing but by then the waves had built up coming from Camano Island to a decent size. I padd...

Just what I wanted for Christmas! Light wind from Kayak Point to Tulare Beach then the wind picked up! Nice run back to Warm Beach. I did another short lap since the waves were building but I couldn't stay too long today!

Not a lot of wind but a good ebb tide today. Some glassy upwind along McKees Beach.

Tulare Beach to Kayak Point. Paddled upwind to Tulare Beach in a light S wind, there was a good wind line holding steady at Tulare Beach and I could see over my right shoulder as I looked back a wind line with south wind moving south. After the two wind lines combined, we paddled upwind for another five minutes then paddled DW to Kayak Point.

Light wind along the shoreline for the upwind. I was even checking emails next to Sunny Shores, but the wind started to pick up at Tulare Beach point, so I worked my way offshore a bit and DW the 3.5 miles back to Kayak Point. The first half was more wind swell, and the second half was more wind waves. All the video was from the second half.

Wind in the low twenties. The venturi is between the Olympic Mountains to the West and the Cascade Mountains to the East. So, Admiralty Inlet, Saratoga Passage and Port Susan have the strongest and most consistent winds in the Puget Sound. Also, this time of the year we have Kings tide which can ebb up to three feet an hour.

Solid wind today at Kayak Point. There was a narrow seam along the shoreline that was protected from the wind that you can see on the early clips, so I was able to do 91 minutes of laps. I was a bit tired from the two hours I did late Friday when the front was first starting to come through as you can see on the last clip.

Kayak Point sunset cruise. The wind was building the entire paddle, so the waves were steep in the beginning, lots of catching a wave then breaking and also lots of paddling around waves. Towards the end it got more wind swell like. Lots of color in the sky, Mt Rainier and the Olympics looked nice but the Super View on the GoPro makes them look so far away.

Beautiful place...
Love how this video really shows exactly what I missed and you nailed, which is the almost 'S' shaped wave pattern from interacting depth, river current, and ebb tide.
Yes! Those waves were so fun to surf!
Ride dem mafukin waves Jimi
All the best for 2025
@@IamNothing82 Thanks, All the best to you too!!
Nice Jim. Are you putting anything together for the film festival?
@@paulreavley5900 Thanks! Yes, I will shorten the Gale video from a few weeks ago and add some text.
What kind of camera setup do you use?
I'm using a GoPro 10 Black that I have mounted to the brim of a trucker hat with Binder Screws. 4K 60 fps Super View with motion stabilization turned on.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
What is the best swell in the area around everett?
At Kayak Point during the fall, winter and spring storms. Port Susan is very deep and has a long fetch. Jetty Island gets wind waves from the thermal winds almost every day in the summer and when the Snohomish River is ebbing during the thermal it has nice swell near Preist Point.
Really good energy in the waves on this day!
Fantastic waves
@@MarioGarcia-rn4im Yes they were!
@@MarioGarcia-rn4im Thanks! Yes they were wonderful!
So this is the price of what riding the good snow at Stevens today cost me. Ouch!
@@bentz98125 It was a good day either way! I tried to send you a phone video clip but it must’ve been too big.
That chill music makes it feel super smooth. I’ve got a similar orange Vega Flex. Would you please tell me what is the watch mount you’re using?
www.onthewater360.com/collections/accessories or you can get them from Jinventionz
I have had the Fles for three and a half years and love it. One of these days I plan to get an Arc for our big cold water winter storms.
Thanks for the mount info. I’m loving the Flex, wow they feel good and look great. Haven’t tried the Arc but hear they are getting rave reviews
I shoulda been there.
@@bentz98125 Yes!
I'm waiting for the next southeast storm to kick in to repeat a run I did from Seward Park to the east end of the I90 bridge. Last time was super fun. The wind picks up as it funnels along the shore and underneath the bridge creating some long surfing rides. At the same time, as one approaches the bridge, reflected waves get larger and larger, occasionally allowing one to get airborne as one surfs through the chop. Would be fun to meet up!
Sounds like a fun run requiring no shuttle! I use to paddle around Mercer Island on Sunday mornings years ago. The ORCA champs race in March use to start there and DW to Sail Sand Point, they did that course a couple years!
Are you paddling at 0 degrees ...
Wind and water can make it feel like it's freezing but one of the days was almost in the 50's! At sea level the pacific NW coast rarely freezes. Cloud cover even keeps what warmth there is from escaping.
@@MarioGarcia-rn4im Yes, I’ve a zero for 5 or 6 years now.
@@bentz98125 I think he means zero degrees feather.
An actual ending at the end of this one! Ha!
@@denise-ski907 I’m hoping to get some video footage from the new pier soon! With a south wind direction like yesterday the swells go right next to the pier!
Sharks won't get you but the cold might.
brrrrr
I stopped after the first lap and put on thicker pogies!
Yes, lots of debris! Glad the water was clean.
This time of the year we need to pay attention then there's a Kings tide and a big windstorm at the same time.
Love the long smooth ones!
Me too!😀
Well, if it’s on RUclips it must not be the dream I thought it was!
@@bentz98125 It was a good one! I’m still bummed I didn’t get any video of the second short lap.
@@bentz98125 You were surfing great! Just occasionally taking a couple strokes.
Always fun bumps on the lake!
Fantastic waves
Yes they are! I like the fast moving wind waves!
That looks so F-ing fun!
Nice conditions and surfing. Where is this?
@@zachhandler Thanks! It’s called Port Susan. It’s about halfway between Seattle and Bellingham. We started in Everett at Jetty Island and finished at Kayak Point Regional Park. The run is about 12 miles.
Good capture of sea friend!
@@denise-ski907 Thanks! I see them a lot in Port Susan but there usually to far away.
A nice break from the big gusts.
A" fish called Vega"
The ski's from Vega are beautiful and I bet they paddle just as good. Sad that they don't sell them in the Netherlands. 😢
@@IamNothing82 I guess the UK Ozone dealer near London is out of the question because of Brexit? I see the Euro Ozone dealer is in SW France around 1100 - 1200 km from Amsterdam. Road trip? Maybe combine with a vacation/paddling tour in France?
@@paulreavley5900 thank you for thinking with me.. yeah, it's possible ofcourse, how knows in the future.
@@IamNothing82 They are and they do!
@@MarioGarcia-rn4im something like that!
Nice waves.. haha, i thought you saved it, but you chose the other side to fall in 😊.
Thanks. Nice mix of wind swell and wind waves. I thought I saved it too for a second, but I tried to put my foot back in, I should have just slowed down and grabbed the paddle then put my foot back in.
Almost as if those waves and your boat's hull were designed for each other! The universe is inhospitable and life harsh, but sometimes a benevolent disguise gets stolen somewhere from someone and the wind gods pretend to be friendly!
It’s been a while since we had a stretch of like we have had the last couple weeks!
Fantastic waves!
@ Yes! That was a good day!
Happy Sunday!!!
Nice remount Jim! I am a big fan of the " landing gear method". Throttle up then pull the feet in. Remember to finish every brace with a violent catch!
@@FasterFartherX Thanks! I usually take a hard stroke and put my right leg completely over the boat so that I’m centered on the boat then I start to paddle and put one foot in at a time. That’s how I practice it anyway.
Lots of side push there! Good to keep those remount skills fresh!
@@denise-ski907 We paddled out one mile then surfed another mile NW to get a good line which helped a lot but we still had to work left. I did a couple days of remounting practice a couple weeks ago, glad I did!
Can't believe how sedate those waves look on the video. Sure you fell out, but how is it you're getting smooth ride after smooth ride on the very same waves I got thrown around like a rag doll on? I'm going with equipment. Yeah, it's the boat, for sure.
There were lots of big waves, but the GoPro wave flattener strikes again. Definitely felt spicy! I was waiting for a steep wave or two to pass me then I knew I could catch one. Funny that's what a downwind foiler was saying in his video that I watched the other day.
Great runs! The diagonal king! Like the music, too, even twice 😊
@@denise-ski907 Thanks! I usually use the same music but probably should mix it up.
Conditions a bit more lined up down there. Nice!
We had some mystery swell coming from the south end of the of Whidbey Island that was totally beamy 2-foot ground swell for the first few miles then we got north and west of it about the time the wind waves got big enough to surf. The wind and waves just kept getting better the rest of the way.
Lovely day
That’s awesome. Would love to see it from above and get a glimpse of what it looks like. When you fell off the wave, I thought you’d been left behind…seeing you paddle back on (unless edited of course) was sweet! Game changing tech foils. Love em. Well done! 💪
@@JamesWilson-ts5xk Thanks! The foils have taken over down in the Gorge! The windsurfing foils, wing foils, and downwind foils! It has been fun to watch the progress!
