In fact, this IS romantically coded.
I feel like it’s supposed to be subtly romantically coded because I don’t think the duffers would dupe people over like this. They are clearly very talented writers and pay A LOT of attention to detail. Even the clothing manager, nothing is a coincidence in this show. I jsut think a lot of fans don’t like the idea of it having some kind of romantic undertones (even if it ends up being one sided romance). Will being gay was something hinted at from season one and hai love for Mike was hinted at an equal amount, but people were shocked when will turned out to be gay because nobody really wanted to look into it and see that as a possibility. It’s just up for depiction for now but people tend to skip out on details.
@hmm8139 Also, a lot of people turn a blind eye to the details (or can't tell the difference) because it's a series. It's on a screen. They see it to believe it. They don't explore it any further, nor do they have much of an idea of how to explore concepts or ideas that are almost obvious.
while watching s4 i didnt notice the music in this scene...that soundtrack feels so mild and heartwarming it reminds me of the soundtracks from earlier tv shows or movies like in 2000s ig

I just realize they cut the interruption part of the scene away from this clip LMAO it’s the most telling part of the scene that their relationship is romantically coded
The interruption trope is used with them like 3 times just this season, the Duffer Brothers are really wanting everyone to know “Hey, this is an intimate moment!” They even use [tender, emotional music] a lot with them too, most of the other canon couples usually only get the [tender, emotional music] once or twice, they’ve gotten it like 4-6 times.
