    Your plumber got you in extra material or your code is ridiculous. Your water meter appeared to be 3/4, so using a main of 1 1/4 does nothing. You could have used a 6 inch main and youd still be held back by the meter. An argument for friction loss can be made and a 1 inch main would be way more than needed.

    I find it easier to trench manually with the special heavy sharp cutting shovels combined with the 4 inch trenchers. Then you don't have to rent the large trencher that requires a trailer or ramps, and the added costs.

    The anti-siphon valves are supposed to be at least 12" higher than the highest point in your system. I was going to do what you did but decided to use copper. Not any savings but hoping even easier to replace if needed. I am building a custom box that matches the house to cover the manifold. Thanks for the great info.

    Not bad, but there are some things people should take note of: Always check with your local water authority regarding backflow prevention: The water you are protecting isn't only in your home but all your neighbors, too. You shouldn't be using anti-syphon valves below ground - these should be mounted at least 6" higher than the highest sprinkler head or outlet in the system. Regular solenoid valves would have been better and you would be using half as many union couplers (only needed on one side of each valve). A single anti-syphon valve should be installed upstream of your manifold, near the connection to your water source, where it can act as both an atmospheric vacuum breaker and a master valve to depressurize the manifold, in case you end up with a leaky valve in the future. When using Unions: The O Ring side should be Up on a vertical installation or on the Valve Side if horizontal: That O Ring isn't attached and can easily fall off or be misaligned. PVC Primer and Solvent Cement: The Primer cleans the pipe and fitting, dissolving any flakes or burrs and priming the items for the Solvent Cement. Excess primer will weaken the pipe of fitting, so only add primer once, running the dauber about a dozen times around the pipe (the lettering on the pipe should fade away) and about half as many times inside the fitting. The Solvent Cement is just that: it will dissolve the pipe and fitting and chemically bond them together. One wipe around the pipe and in the fitting should be more than enough, with fitting attached immediately using a quarter turn to fully seat it. Wipe away any bead or excess, inside or out. Teflon Plumber's tape: Three or four turns, starting at the front winding back is all you need. Use your thumbnail to cut the tape cleanly: don't let the tape stretch or fray. Don't work the tape into the groove with your thumbnail as you show in the video: just smooth the end down and it will seat properly when you thread the pieces together.

  • @robertthompson3447
    @robertthompson3447 Год назад

    To manually open the valves, use a strong magnet on the top of the solenoid. Not only is this easier than turning it a quarter turn, it will reduce the amount of wear on the seals. Note: this requires a strong magnet, one off of your fridge not be adequate.

    Thank you for this. I am mid-project doing something very very similar. I thought I'd do a little more research to confirm my approach and this was very very helpful. Coincidentally, I am having a similar number of valves as yourself (at 7) and using the same model valve as well. My main take-away is to locate the valves "above ground" and also assure appropriate maintenance access. Your video also gave me a new bright idea! Before the vid, I was planning on enable expansion to some sort of wash station, but not a raised sink... something closer to ground level and mix of art and functionality. Great ideas on Pinterest. Anyway, instead, I will add an additional hose spigot.. perhaps similar to what you have done.

    There are manifold of 3 which can be expanded that you can buy for about 12 dollars from orbit. The only problem I have is I have to match it to my existing system which could be a pain but for someone who is starting from scratch, you would not have that concern. The Unions are rather expensive, if you made it high like your original you have plenty of space to cut the pipes in the future without the need of an expensive union.

  • @mikethelandscaper41

    Stack a valve box to cover the ground hydrant. Do this all the time when the pipe is deep but it can also raise it so the cover fits over the valve.

  • @t0kinl3lunts
    @t0kinl3lunts 2 года назад

    I know this is old, but you need to raise those valves or put a back flow prevention device ahead of the manifolds. They need to be at least 6” above the highest sprinkler to work. It’s in every valve’s instruction manual. Some codes require more too. You risk contaminating your water supply otherwise.

  • @mursshud
    @mursshud 2 года назад

    What was not clear is why you just did not connect to the new main. If what you already had was working that is all that was needed. Also they make manifolds saves time and money. If you go to a irrigation supply you could’ve gotten all this cheaper and better quality. With all that said you did make a very clear video and you learned so I will call it a win.

    Thank you for your videos. I have some experience with all sorts of home projects, but you explain everything very well and don't skip over steps like other "professionals" do. Don't be too hard on yourself about not saving money. The original quote from the plumber wouldn't have included fixing the problems out front either, so you can't count that. The only thing I am considering in my set up is not to make a valve manifold, but to run a "main" line around the yard and then run each valve off of it. The difference would be that I have to run more wire, but have a lot less piping in the trench all around. It also might help with water pressure since I go all the way around the house. The down fall would be, if something happens to the "main," then none of the zones will work.

    Maybe a professional can comment see I had the same issues as u’ previous owner installed sprinkler heads and lines all the way to a 3 way manifold in a green box’ installed a backflow shut off valve’ he for w/e reason never ran water to it’ but he did pipe the main water to manifold above ground for easy find/connection 5ft from outside Faucet’ Yet when I call landscaper they want to run and entire new fn system Uhmm why? It needs u to plumb water to it then it’s ready to go’ I think they just wanna make money or if there is a reason I’d love to know 4500 for system they want To bring in new sprinkler system Topsoil/ manure and hydro seed they want 8k dollars! My yards maybe 80’x40’ seems fn excessive to me so 3500 for u hell I’d take that deal in a heart beat man

    Okay first off bless your little heart for your efforts. But there are so many things wrong here where do I start. I've been installing sprinklers for over 40 years. I've been a backflow tester also. That type of valve with the backflow device built into it must be 12 in above the highest head in the system! If you ever sell your house and you have a home inspection you'll be redoing those valves. By the way everywhere I've worked you're supposed to get a permit to do that sprinkler work. Here's some ways to avoid the screw-ups. Go walk around a subdivision that's being built and look and see how the professional crew is doing it. Also you could hire someone like me for about $75 an hour to come out and lay things out and point you in the right direction. Sometimes I will do the machine trenching for an additional cost. Sometimes I'll sell you the materials. Sometimes I will install the electric valves and the homeowner takes it from there. Sometimes I'll come out at the end and do the final adjustments of the heads. It's whatever the homeowner wants me to do. I'm happy to come out for an hour here an hour there and guide him along. I really enjoy seeing a job come out well. Whether I do all of it or portions of it. Sprinkler systems aren't rocket science but it's not something to just dive into thinking oh yeah I can do that how hard can it be. Probably 25% of my time is spent fixing jacked up jobs similar to this one. It's worth the money to gets a little professional advice at the start of a project like this that could cost thousands of dollars. Spend your money wisely. Find somebody that knows what they're doing to work with. It can be a lot of fun. Good luck people!

    Thank you for this video. I'm finishing up my sprinkler install now. Some things I would do differently would be. Instead of buying the inground sprinkler box, I would buy a larger hard plastic storage container and all mainline tee or elbow fittings on the outside of box. Only valve and couplings on inside. I didn't want to buy a 2nd $365.00 back flow preventer and Instead had to rent a jack hammer to break a path across driveway. I did it but I feel it would have been faster and easier to just buy and install a 2nd back flow in the front and go from that one for the front. The jack hammer alone was $150.00 for 4 hours. Heavy as all get out.
