At one point earlier in the episode Adam sings, "Stiff man puttin' my mind in jail and the judge bang the gavel and say no bail! Gonna lick his hand and wag my tail!!" I wonder if these lines were the writers' way of telling us they were being constrained by the network in certain ways (as often happened) in this allegory of the counterculture. We can perhaps see this in what happens to Adam and Sevrin when they eat the fruit that's full of acid. Maybe those earlier lines they gave Adam were Roddenberry's own subtle protest, even though he was executive producer rather than director or producer by this time. Also, given that this was science fiction, their chanting the name "Herbert" inevitably suggested Frank Herbert and Dune, which came out in 1965 and had won both the Hugo and Nebula awards in `66.
