Art of the Mall
Добавлен 1 апр 2021
It was spring break 1992, and a trip to a beach didn't interest me. Instead, I satisfied an urge to start photographing malls before they changed forever.
I bought a cheap 35mm film camera and set off. In ten years, I had explored parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and beyond (and upgraded the camera along the way). But much had already changed by then, and I now look back grateful for what I collected during that time.
This project is tinged with nostalgia for some places that were a backdrop to so many of our lives. But the mall phenomenon also presented its share of challenges. Now that the mall craze is over, how do we create remarkable gathering spaces going forward? The past might offer answers.
I hope you enjoy the memories.

Art of the Mall: Finale
When I started this project, it was hard to imagine reaching the end of it. But here we are! Funny that what began as just a task to organize and scan old photo prints got this far.
The pictures included in this video are unused extras, and all twelve locations have been covered somewhere on the channel already.
Best wishes to those who continue to document what little remains of these spaces. While it would have been amazing to have had today’s technology back when I was collecting these photos, I’m still very happy with the material I got. I hope it’s brought you a little happiness, too.
Thanks so much for enjoying the memories with me!

Dandelion fountains so popular in malls during the 1970s. My father helped make these photos possible during a family trip in 1979. This is a special memory of him today on Father’s Day; he is deeply missed.

Richard E. Jacobs Group-developed malls didn't disappoint when it came to impressive sculptural elements. I don’t have documentation to support it, but it’s possible that this sculpture was by Clarence Van Duzer, an artist who created a lot of metal pieces for malls.

Design elements in the water sculpture shown here were echoed in those at East Towne Mall in Madison, Wisconsin, and Belden Village in Canton, Ohio (both developed by Jacobs, Visconsi, and Jacobs, as was Fayette). The sculptures at East Towne and Belden Village are credited to Clarence Van Duzer, who was a member of the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art at that time (Madison Newspapers,...

Artist Clarence Van Duzer was responsible for many sculptures in shopping centers developed by Fayette Mall’s developer, the Richard E. Jacobs Group. Van Duzer created art pieces for Jacobs-developed Brookfield Square (Brookfield, WI), East and West Towne Malls (both in Madison, WI), Belden Village (Canton, OH), and others. He became known for, as he termed it, “sculptural water action” (Wiscon...

The anchor of this wing was Sears, which later became a pass-through to a new wing of the mall built on the opposite side of the store. Originally anchored by McAlpin’s, the new wing opened in 1993. Renovation of the original 1971 portion of the mall followed.

This wing of Fayette Mall was originally anchored by Shillito’s. At the time of these photos, the anchor was Lazarus. It's currently Macy’s.

This is one of the only malls I experienced back in the '90s where most of the lights (including the colorful fountain lights) were never turned on until evening. So here are photos from an evening at Fayette Mall, with all those colorful lights. Here's Fayette Mall in daytime: ruclips.net/video/D0svgnLTLig/видео.html
A special memory of my mom for Mother’s Day…

I always think of my mom when I see mall photos from the past because she often took me with her to ours when I was little. Mom passed away several years ago, and today I’ll take a moment to remember her.

Mall St. Matthews is Kentucky’s first mall. Its second renovation in the early 1990s was technically the most recent one, but much has been removed or altered since then. Several elements from that time but slowly lost over the years are documented here. Thanks to @escandelev for capturing on video the remaining fountains: ruclips.net/video/dZO0AmDDey0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/-rxFXGG_nas/в...

The second re-design of Oxmoor included several interesting features. It incorporated the existing center court column structure into a new, elaborate fountain. The existing smaller fountain was retained and got an overhaul. Later, the columns and part of the larger fountain were removed, leaving only the large circular pool. Eventually, all were removed, and the focus of center court became re...

I grew up going to that mall and it went downhill from 1999 until now!!!!
Thanks for posting these videos. Brought back some great memories of malls I used to shop at long ago. I like the way you grabbed images of the central courts. With age, these fancy water features were shed with lower maintenance features. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, the center court/fountain features were always a priority for photos! So glad you enjoyed them.
Loved this mall. It was the first one i went to as a child, way back in the 70s. This was the most beautiful mall ive ever seen. Miss the carpeted conversation pits, the brick and tile flooring...i miss it so much. Thank you for posting because i have almost no pix of my childhood left and none of Nothgate. :'-)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to put this together.
Loved this mall. started going after it opened up in 1988. if you have any more photos of this mall in richmond ky id love to see them
Because Richmond Mall never renovated, there are several YT videos that capture much more of it than my photos do. A favorite is this very clever and thorough one from UniComm Productions: ruclips.net/video/SM9RvIv-NUk/видео.html
My old stomping grounds as a 90’s teen. I spent many summer and Christmas breaks there buying NES and SNES games etc. I heard this place is going under now…😭
Rip tri county mall
This was used to be such a beautiful mall!
Thank you for your documentation of these places. It’s been a nice ride 🫡
It was so much fun to share these after all these years. Glad you enjoyed it!
Number 6 Bellevue Center… an incredible mall! Thank you so much for uploading all of these! I’ve loved your channel, and it’s brought so much nostalgia! Thanks for the memories!
It's been a pleasure!
I terribly miss when the mall looked like this. I have so many fond memories there, growing up in the 90’s…
Did you hear about the former Sears being demolished?
I had heard vague news about some sort of super grocery-type store going in?? Just puts 1978 that much farther in the rear view mirror!
I can smell the water in those fountains and hear that water from here. They should have never got rid of them.
Oh gosh more!!! Can’t wait to see them all! Loved that mall in the 80’s and 90’s. Spent a lot of time there. Thanks for the vids!
They've been a pleasure to share. Thanks for your kindness.
Got any of the mall decorated for Christmas during this time
@@lauraanderson8027 I never go any photos of Fayette at Christmas myself, but I did find this clip from RewindingWorld of center court during Christmas 1989: ruclips.net/video/RE9NlqxLKOg/видео.html
I wasn’t born yet when it closed but I really would of wanted to go to that mall
Why couldn’t these fountains have just stayed in the mall?
That would have been wonderful. I often think about the value that these sculptures might have now if they still exist, which is unlikely, I guess.
When I was a young teenager, we entered my dog in a Cutest Dog contest at Glendale. She didn't win, alas.
Takes me back. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the mention! My favorite Kentucky Mall! I’m so glad this mall still has those fountains!
Me too...and thanks for getting them on video!
@@artofthemallyou’re welcome!
Do you know where you found these photos?
I only use photos that I own in anything that I publish, so all images are scanned from my personal collection of prints. If you're interested, my channel description includes more about my mall photo project.
@@artofthemall Sounds good! Thanks for the response!
I wish the second floor and the fountains still existed in the mall!
Totally!
This is so awesome! So much nostalgia of being there in the 80’s. Loved Thornbury’s Toy Store.
Glad you enjoyed it! Fayette was local to me at the time, so I have lots of photos. More planned for this one later.
Can’t wait to see them!!! Great memories of even the theater there in the mall before it closed late 80’s! Also crossroads cinemas across from the mall, and South Park Cinemas!
OMG Thank you so much! This is my childhood mall! Where’s the fountain? They must have gotten rid of it at somepoint
I did check for photos of CoolSprings online a while back, and it looked to me like the fountain had been removed.
My favorite Tennessee mall! Have you been to Rivergate Mall in Goodlettsville, TN?
I stopped at Rivergate in 1994, but it was so busy I had to give up photographing. I was getting pics of people staring at me and not much mall! I was able to crop out some usable stuff for my Nashville Malls Sampler video, though, so at least it's briefly represented here.
I wish those fountains still existed!
Me, too--so much
These are so cool, the mall looks so different but also so similar! Do you have any more of Northgate?
Thanks for your kind comment. To your question, I narrowed down images from my collection to what worked best for the RUclips project, so I do have extras. There are plans for them.
ive always wondered if theres an entrance under staples
Thanks for this, I used to go to Aladdin's Castle and Walden Software and I was trying to remember exactly where they were.
For whatever reason, I have always been so obsessed with Bellevue Center! Thanks for posting these photos!
It's been a great pleasure to put these together. I'm glad you enjoyed them!
I hope there's a picture of that specific tree hanging up in the mall somewhere...
Glendale was a nice mall up until the mid 1990s. The Fashion mall up north gradually lured retailers away from Glendale. Also the opening of Circle Centre in 1995 lured even more shoppers away as well.
I went to this mall a lot as a child and still do, really miss the fountain and the carousel !
Do you have anymore photos from Forest Fair? Love that mall!
Yes-there are a couple more photos now in the Cincinnati sampler, and it will get its own moment later on. Of course, had I known in 1992 what the future would hold for Forest Fair, I would have taken a lot more photos!
@@artofthemall sick! loving your channel and excited to see more!
