    28 issues. 28 issues to establish the foundation of the team and establish the identities of the characters. 28 issues. That's what original ALPHA FLIGHT had to be who they truly are: "CANADA'S GREATEST HEROES." But all good things come to an end (sooner or later), and so it did with original ALPHA FLIGHT. At a time when continuity still mattered at MARVEL, you would have thought that the new creative team would get familiar with some of the important details and plot-points of the storyline they were finishing. You would have thought wrong. The characteristics that made original ALPHA FLIGHT unique were (not-so-)slowly but surely stripped away until what was left was a complete and total farce. Where are the original members of ALPHA FLIGHT, now? Are they stuck---somewhere---in limbo? Are they being drawn back to the Nexus of ALL Realities, again and again? Are they trapped in an obscure NETHERVERSE, trying to find their way out? Or are they rotting away in a Department H jail? Once upon a time, they were "CANADA'S GREATEST HEROES": Jeanne-Marie Beaubier; Dr. James MacDonald Hudson; Marrina Smallwood; Jean-Paul Beaubier; Eugene Milton Judd; Dr. Walter Langkowski; Dr. Michael Twoyoungmen; Anne (Narya) McKenzie, and; Elizabeth Twoyoungmen. Once upon a time, they were "CANADA'S answer to The Avengers." Once upon a time, they were ALPHA FLIGHT... ...and they were incredible. NEXT ISSUE [AF# 29]: The Hulk puts a beat down on the team so bad that AF never truly recovers, in a titanic tale that can only be titled "Bait & Switch"...I mean, "CUT BAIT & RUN!"

    Trippy, yet grounded and character-driven. Character-driven, yet quirky. The A story (OMEGA FLIGHT) starts to blend with the B story (Roger looking for a new host body for Walter). Delphine Courtney foolishly unleashes The Void that was within Shaman's medicine pouch. The medicine pouch Michael was warned NOT to look into. Yet, Michael-as-Shaman HAS TO look directly into the substance that was contained in his medicine pouch to do his part to get it contained, again. Does Michael-as-Shaman go insane? Or is his connection to Elizabeth-as-Talisman at its strongest, just when the team (and the world) need it the most? Is Elizabeth's magical power to be "a ward against all and any evil" at its peak, guarding the minds of ALPHA FLIGHT---even her father--- from the harmful effects of The Void? Well that's my guess/head canon/theory, and I'm sticking to it. Other plot points worth mentioning: (1) Roger is focused and seemingly successful in finding a new host body for Walter [what I meant to add was BOX has 5 fingers in # 26, # 27, and # 28], and; (2) it will take "a week" for AURORA to recover from her cracked ribs. This is much faster than normal [GOOGLE data states that "(i)n most cases, a fractured rib will heal on its own in about six weeks"], but not instantaneous. This is going to be important in ALPHA FLIGHT # 28 and AF # 29.

    I'd have to say that the only thing I'd really agree with you about is regarding the lead. This struck me as a really really fun film with a big "silly and goofy" quota, and I mean that in the best way possible: We lack a type of comedy that used to be pretty common, movies like THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN and THE GREAT RACE. Not quite up to those, but a lot of fun, with a surprising amount of suspense. Well directed, tone-wise, but the great Howard Morris, originally of the classic YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS cast (along with Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca and Carl Reiner (speaking of which, HE would have made a good lead , as he was in THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! WELL, so we differ. who is going to care, ultimately? Just wanted to put in a good word for this---in my opinion---NOT so "Meh" of a film at all. Thanks for taking about it!

    I like the cliff-hanger at the end. That said, I hope someone else comments because I read ALPHA FLIGHT # 26 before # 25 BITD (missed it in real-time when I returned from being stationed overseas). My major impression from # 25 was (and still is): a PINPOINT landing on Ganymede? Are you kidding me? My second impression was: a PINPOINT landing on Ganymede, "ten thousand years in the past"? Are you ________ kidding me? When I got the chance to look back at # 12, I could go, "Okay, the rest of ALPHA FLIGHT didn't see the fight between BOX and Mac (but the reader did), didn't see BOX rip the cybernetic helmet from Mac's head, didn't see Mac "tear out some circuits" from his battlesuit in a last-ditch effort to defeat BOX. So maybe----MAYBE---every Alphan (and quasi-Alphan) who heard that story believed it. But I can imagine Northstar rolling his eyes as "Mac" is telling this tale. I imagine Judd thinking, "This is a bunch of BS." And I can imagine Michael and Aurora looking at each other and thinking, "We're supposed to believe this nonsense?" But that's just me. Mileage may vary.

    • @jmstater

      It's not a great explanation for what happened, and I have a feeling that was on purpose. On the other hand, Alpha was just in an alternate dimension where they retrieved the soul of a departed friend and put it inside a robot body. Is Guardian's story more outlandish than that? But yeah - the story was a bit iffy and I would have liked to have seen one or two members of Alpha suspicious. Could have made the next issue more interesting.

    Threatened with severe punishment if she didn't, Narya had to fulfill the duty entrusted to her by The Old Gods (# 23). And yet, Snowbird will not just leave Langkowski's soul to suffer whatever fate awaited, trapped with Tanaraq's spirit on the planet of the Beasts. Putting together a team with a chance of succeeding in saving Walter is a smart move, and Snowbird and Talisman do it. Snowbird (evidently) knows she can't just march onto the Beasts' home turf---ALONE---and expect to prevail. That would have been foolish. Snowbird needs the rest of ALPHA FLIGHT to have any real hope of accomplishing the mission. Because it turns out that SOMON is a liar and does ALPHA dirty. SOMON (evidently) knows Michael's flaw: self-assurance that tips to over-confidence. But Michael makes adjustments, thinks on his feet. Reformulates possibilities. And finds a way to succeed. Saving Walter's soul comes at great cost, but it is the Hallmark of this new ALPHA FLIGHT that they succeeded. Aurora, whose powers have been altered, who may be WEAKER than before the experiment that changed her, is determined to save Walter. Judd is all-in, no questions asked. [Me, I'd be worrying about how to get back if something happens to Shaman...or Talisman...or both of them]. Heroes don't worry about stuff like that. Heroes trust their teammates. And rightly so. Enjoy it while it lasts. Because friendship, bravery, and common sense won't mean anything very, very soon.

      Alpha Flight were the red-headed stepchildren of Marvel comics, so they had no editorial protection from writers. Too many super strong characters, a more popular gamma-powered character (even though Sasquatch turned out not to be gamma-powered) in the Hulk, etc. I kind of like, though, that Alpha never hit the heights of Avengers and X-Men - it was the special, secret clubhouse for its own little fandom, kind of like the Legion of Super-Heroes for D.C. The other books were for the Marvel normies.

    ALPHA FLIGHT # 23. The stakes are even higher than the death of a character: the stakes are Walter's undying soul. And it doesn't take months and months and months for Snowbird to realize it. Instead of being just another kill-crazy female character, Narya understands the ramifications of destroying "the physical form" of Walter Langkowski and IMMEDIATELY seeks to save the soul of her fallen friend. Narya---Snowbird---often only thought of as being aloof and not wanting to have much to do with mankind, even though it is her duty to protect it from evil threats like The Great Beasts. She will not leave Langkowski's spirit to be trapped (with Tanaraq's) in the Kingdom of the Beasts. It doesn't get much better than this. Oh, and Aurora (who is hinted strongly as being a bit more than just flirtatious in previous issues) actually cares about Walter. And all the characters in the cornerbox are in the issue. The 1st of the two best issues of ALPHA FLIGHT.

    Love it! Was directed here from someone in my Atari discord group. Cool review of an old piece of classic cinema. Ray Milland is great in any role, I think my favorite of his is 1944s The Uninvited. These old movies/media are so interesting as a window into a time I never saw (born in 1982). A literal slice of Americans. Your channel is full of coverage of great classic media I'll have to go back and checkout. I collect Golden Age Comics as well as dabble in old times radio. Lately I've been listening to The Great Gildersleeve and watched a few of the movies starring Harold Peary. Liked and subbed!

      Thanks! Yeah, I'm a little older than you, but also missed out on the period I love so much in terms of entertainment. I'm an OTR fan as well - Gildersleeve is awesome, as is Fibber McGee and Molly from which it spun off, and there's tons of great sci-fi and horror OTR as well.

    The cornerbox has PUCK, who isn't in # 22, but doesn't have Elizabeth/Talisman, who is. More importantly, Elizabeth is shown without the Coronet of Enchantment, with no explanation how this is so since, in # 20, the Coronet is now a part of her and "cannot be removed." I really wish Byrne had given a reason for it because it seems like Elizabeth could take it off, an idea that another writer ran buck-wild with after the Byrne run. Aurora doesn't seem to be concerned about keeping her identity secret. In # 21, the construction worker says "I hear you're one lady who really knows how to have a good time." Who's blabbing? I don't believe Walt is the "kiss and tell" type, especially if he's concerned about protecting her from SUPERvillains (like the SENTINELS) from finding her. Lastly, could Roger phase into ANY metal or just the BOX-armor? And is phasing into metal something just anyone can do?

    • @jmstater
      @jmstater Месяц назад

      Yeah, they're pretty loose with the corner boxes. In terms of Roger Bochs - I'm really not sure about his phasing abilities, they were mostly used for animating the robot. Perhaps he could have jumped into other objects.

    • @Supremmo
      @Supremmo Месяц назад

      @@jmstater That would've been sick if he was able to phase and animate other objects besides his robot form.

    I smoke cigs and a pipe. And i freely admit advertising in hot rod and popular science, popular mechanics magazines influenced me to smoke. But man the marlboro man, and the manly man camel ads made me think it could help in my coolness...i didnt.😮 But i do not understand why tv and internet can show booze and beer commercials and not ciggerates? Cancer is bad, but dui's, liver failure, alchol poisoning, kidney failure, assault, murder, and being a public drunk would be as bad. I dont know i just think whats good for the goose should be good for the gander. Great vid as always.🎉🎉🎉

      @jmstater Месяц назад

      Thanks! The cigarette-ad ban came from the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1970, so it was a matter of federal law. Without that, I'm sure the ads wouldn't have gone away.

Also buldog drummond escapes. And i agree my man godfrey is one of my go-to movies, this movie isnt close to Godfrey. By the way do you like bing crosby movies? His pre 1950's are really amazing. Thanks for including Talisman as a member of the team. She earned that spot in a trial by fire, facing RANAQ twice, once in the present and once in the past. Because, on the cover, Elizabeth/Talisman isn't in the corner box. Maybe the right headshot wasn't ready, but neither SNOWBIRD nor AURORA are in the corner box, either. This is odd (to me) because this issue has a lot of members in it. More importantly though, Judd, Michael, Heather, Elizabeth, and even Narya in her duty-bound way are shown becoming a team...sure, with some strains but still a team, nonetheless. That Judd, Heather, and Michael are shown as friends as well as teammates is extremely important to me. After the death of Mac in # 12, Judd and Michael didn't just go "Oh, your husband's dead, you're traumatized by his death, you have no job and no place to live, too bad, so sad, good luck to ya, gotta bounce." Moreover, when Heather got her legs sliced up in # 14, Judd didn't go "Tough cookies, them's the breaks, you're on your own, gotta go find a NEW new leader." Judd and Michael stuck by Heather's side when she needed them the most. This, to me, is what a true friend does: sticks by you when things are at there lowest, when life has turned to shambles, and there doesn't seem to be much hope for the future. This is important to me because not everyone seemed to understand what friendship is after the Byrne run. Finally, this issue focuses on Elizabeth, (Heather), and Aurora in a way that does not shortchange anyone else, male or female. This is just not done at BRAND ECHH and NOT BRAND ECCH these days.

    I'm glad John Byrne didn't decompress his stories, like Marvel does now. The art shows and the words tell the origin of Talisman, straightforwardly (given a lot of stuff is happening, fairly rapidly). And the terrible part of becoming Talisman is revealed in # 20, coming up next.

    The more I watch such videos, the more I prefer BRAINIAC in that wave. I dunno but he just pops as he should. Directly from the good old time comics. As Dr.Fate, but Brainiac shows rarest colors for a costumed doll (as two-face wears average clothes after all)… No? Thx for this demo

    Conflict has consequences. That's Byrne at his best. Moreover, Elizabeth looked into the medicine pouch before taking out the Coronet...something no one else could do without going insane. If Ranaq did indeed transfer his dying agony to Snowbird, that's REALLY bad news. A Great Beast possibly possessing the demi-goddess who is their sworn enemy? Wow. Lastly, in the cornerbox, Northstar is on the cover but not in the book. I wonder why.

    Good overview. I was too young to remember Man From Atlantis but I do remember seeing the Marvel comic in the newsagent.. Logan's Run was on too late in the UK. I wasn't able to stay up. V was magnificent. I own the whole box set. I think V ended at the right time.
