    The rule is designed to disgust KeJie. Maybe the chinese association should make a rule so that at each turn you must salute to Kim Jung un before placing the stone or you lost 2 points. The problem is not with the lid but that Byun also made fouls with the clock and referee didn’t call them out. KeJie didn’t seem to bother about Byuns fouls because the game should be about go not about stupid technical fouls but Byun didn’t think the same. That is extremely unprofessional and shameful when you have to use everything you could to win a game designed to show your intelligence

    Change the rule only for the final to target the player's habit, 2002 world cup showed you how they did things.

    Well the rule fits the habits of Korean players but not Chinese players, in Go I guess all brain powers have gone to thinking how to place another chess, so the new rule is actually a disturbance to the Chinese players

    When I rewatched the game, I noticed that the Koreans placed the clock where the lid should have been, while the lid itself was moved to the left-hand side of the board. This setup seemed deliberately designed to disrupt Ke Jie’s rhythm and force him into making a mistake. From a neurological perspective, when someone has trained their entire life to play Go, their muscle memory and instincts take over automatically. Manipulating the environment in such a way to exploit this is underhanded and unfair. What the Koreans did was a dirty tactic, undermining the spirit of fair competition.

    The ref suspending the game during byun’s turn is ridiculous. And for something that happened three turns ago lmao. It’s literally just finding ways to give byun more time to think.

    I learned Go as I was 8 year old. In China, we never put captured stone into the lid, because at the end of game we don't count the captured stone to find out, who wins. Instead, we count the area and the stones are alive. Therefore, th rule in China is a littbe different to in Korea and in Japan. Once, it becomes a habbit from child, it's not easy to change it. You know, you need to 100% concentrate on the game self, not this bullshxt.

    In North Korea, if someone criticize kim jong un, he will be prosecuted and executed, and his family members will be thrown into prison. Well, I guess I can not really blame kim jong un and north korea, because that is the rule.

    First, this new "rule was introduced in the middle of the LG-Cup( mid Nov. 2024) and randomly enforced. Second, the Korean referee pauses the game to favor the Korean player intentionally (he has limited thinking time left). This makes us remember the 2002 world soccer game. If Korean players can beat you the referee will always help. What a joke for Korean sportsmanship.

    Ke Jie revealed: "When I was penalized two points for the first time" "I told the referee that I had read the rules, and the rules did not say when the pieces should be placed on the chess cover" "The rules only say that the dead pieces should be placed on the chess cover" "He said something that still scares me to this day" "He said that he has the right to interpret, he is the referee, he has the final say" "Then Mr. Yu called our Chang ZX next to him" "The referee told us that if you continue to delay, then I will sentence you to lose now" 柯洁透露: “在我第一次被判罚两目的时候” “我向裁判提出,我看过规则,规则里并没有说棋子什么时候要放到棋盖上” “规则只说了死子要放到棋盖里这句话呀” “结果他说了让我到现在还觉得有点恐怖的话” “他说,解释权归他所有,他是裁判,他说了算” “然后俞老就在旁边打电话给我们的常zx” “裁判就和我们讲,如果你继续拖延时间,那么我现在就判你负”

    The 29th LG Cup started in Apr. 2024, but the rule was created in Nov. 2024 and only came into effect three weeks before the finals. This means the rule was essentially changed during the competition. One big problem is that the rule doesn’t clearly state "When" players are supposed to put the stone in the lid, which makes it unreasonable to punish anyone who interprets it differently. On top of that, the biggest issue in the final game was that the violation happened several moves earlier and had already been resolved. The pause caused by this gave Byun extra time to think about a critical move in a time-restricted match, especially since he already had less time left.

    There is something called muscle memory when you play Go for more than 20 years, about where to put the captured stones. In China rule, whether you put captured stones simply does not matter at all. The new Korean rule introduced at the middle of LG Cup Games simply requests KeJie to break his muscle memory, to put caputured stone in a lib. It is extremely hard when you have to concentrate on the game itself. Koreans cannot win the Go game but use such stupid rule nothing to win a world Go Cup? Shameful.

  • @colinchen5615

    This ridiculous rule is like... NBA set the rule to require players to tuck their jersey shirts into their pants while playing (Indeed NBA has this rule but a lot of players occasionally forget it) one week before the final game. First-time violations will be punished by 20 points, and the second will be penalized by forfeit.

  • @hakuc4869
    @hakuc4869 10 дней назад

    I understand why you're surprised Ke Jie violated the rule so often, but it's actually easy to explain. In fact advanced players are more likely to break such rules than beginners because they’ve spent years building habits. Imagine introducing a chess rule requiring players to place captured pieces in a specific spot. I believe Grandmasters would struggle because it would go against everything they’ve done for years. During intense games, under time pressure, they’ll act on instinct without realizing they’ve broken the rule. Rules that force players to change lifelong habits are unfair and shouldn't exist in the first place, especially when introduced in a game that has held competitions for decades without it. I certainly can't blame KeJie for violating it.

    Even in the paper and pen era, the best practice should be count by the ref and write on a paper so both players know the situation clearly. And they want players to count the number of stones… Now, it is electric era. 😂 And it is LG. Like LG cannot even produce a screen for notification.😅

  • @ericchenlab
    @ericchenlab 10 дней назад

    Chinese Go uses a different counting system where the captured stones does not affect the outcome (you only count the territories on the board). In fact most of the times you just hand the captured stones back to your opponents. Since Ke Jie is trained under the Chinese system I believe this has become his second nature to not care about the captured stones, especially under high pressured situations where the focus is on the game.

    I found it more problematic is that the rule seems to allow the referee to interrupt the game anytime (theoretically, even after the game is finished and referee watches the video record and found a mistake). You know, two points penalty at the opening or at the end game are completely different.

So, enforcing such a rule now is definitely weird.

    Hi Charlie, first of all appreciate your input and you standing against this rule. Now the rule is obviously ridiculous but I want to make some clarifications regarding Kejie's response in game 3. Kejie was not upset because of the rule, what he is upset about is the way that the referee stops the game. There are several points to make here. 1, The problematic move where Kejie forgot to place the stone in the cup happened way before the referee intervened. The exact move I forgot but the time difference is roughly 30 minutes. Korean referee explains that they had to reach out to Kejie's coach for confirmation which is a ridiculous explanation. In Go game, when something passes it passes. There is no reason for them to identify something and then intervene after 30 minutes later. 2. The real reason that Kejie is mad(which you already kind of covered) is because that when referee stopped the game, it was Bianxiangyi's turn and the entire game is very very complex. Bianxiangyi spent 20 minutes thinking of the next move and he has less than an hour left before countdown. It is not uncommon for human to make mistake when under time constraint. Now when referee stopped the game, bianxiangyi did not make the move yet but his timer stops, which basically means that he gets unlimited amount of thinking time (until the game starts). This is where Kejie got furious because it directly affect the game outcome, and this is against the Go rule. There are several videos that proves this. In go game every second counts. So yes rule is ridiculous, but the real problem is not even with the rule. Again thank you for giving your thoughts on this but I do want to make sure you are aware of all these additional unfairness.

    The rule is absurd, and it isn't all that strange that someone fully concentrated in the game will default to their habit intead of remembering a new "etiquette" rule unrelated to the game itself. The punishment of two points is also absurd, and at the very least there should be a warning. What a way of destroying the game.

    This is such a frustrating situation, especially for someone like Ke Jie. It feels like a trap, or even a dilemma, where no choice seems right. If I imagine myself in Ke Jie’s position, I would feel completely helpless and unfairly treated. After all, I haven’t done anything wrong-I’ve put in my best efforts, taken every game seriously, and upheld the spirit of competition. But then, the organizer, who holds all the power, arbitrarily changes the rules midway without sufficient discussion about whether it’s appropriate. If I don’t fight back, it feels like I’m allowing myself to be insulted, as if my integrity and effort don’t matter. Yet when communication with the organizers proves fruitless, and they appear to care more about enforcing their authority and winning than upholding fairness and sportsmanship, I might feel like withdrawing is the only right I have left. Of course, withdrawing is a decision that hurts everyone. It’s like “hurting 500 while hurting myself 1,000.” I would lose my honor and face criticism, but the organizers can still declare themselves champions and achieve their goals. In this case, I would stand with Ke Jie. I believe it’s important to speak up for him because, in the future, when I encounter a similar situation, I would also hope for understanding and support from others. Highlighting these issues and pushing back against the unchecked power of organizers could help prevent similar injustices from happening again.
