Everest Three Passes Trek: Crossing Renjo La Pass
After reaching Everest Base Camp, we spent the next several days passing over Cho La pass and Renjo La pass, the final two passes of the Everest Three Passes trek. After flying out of the most dangerous airport in the world, we return to Kathmandu where we spent the last few days enjoying the luxuries of the Hyatt Regency.

Everest Three Passes Trek: Crossing Kongma La Pass (18,000 ft)
Просмотров 9854 месяца назад
After a week of hiking into the Everest region, we arrived at Dingboche and prepared for our traversal of Kongma La Pass, the 18,159 ft (5,535 m) apex of the 3 Passes Trek. Passing over Kongma La Pass was arguably the hardest 10 miles I've ever hiked in my life! The next day, we set off for Everest Base Camp, and along the way we said goodbye to an old friend... #everest #everestbasecamp #evere...

      Great, glad you enjoyed it @@rajatpathy8523. The first few days up to Lukla was pretty hazy due to a lot of woodsmoke. As we got higher the air cleared up, but the trail got dusty. There’s a lot of animal manure mixed in with that dust, so you might want to wear a buff over your mouth to avoid breathing it in. It’s probably one of the main causes of Khumbu cough.

    Just as an FYI to those wondering where the wrong pass was, it's between Lobuche and Dzonglha we went north and tried to go through Nuptse view (as it's labeled on Gaia). Instead we should've just gone south and taken Everest to Gokyo via Cho La. As for the meat in Thame, my guess is that it's tumeric on the chicken. As for the beef, that's probably b/c unlike US beef they aren't adding things like Carbon Monoxide (banned in the EU and Canada btw), Nitrites, or Vitamin C to prevent the oxidation on the outer surface which would turn the beef brown. That way you think the meat is "fresh" even though it's possibly been sitting in the supermarket for a couple days. Finally, it always cracks me up when you say your are putting on more layers b/c it's getting cold and there I am in the background wearing shorts 🤣

      @@wilsonjimenez2867 we hired the jeep from a company called Wilderness Excursion. They charged us $265 ($300 with tip). The route was pretty straightforward (pretty frequently marked), but I recommend using a gps navigation app like Gaia GPS or AllTrails, and have everyone in the party download the maps to their phones. When visibility is poor (fog, night, etc.), the GPS map app makes it a lot easier to navigate. Though, sometimes there are washouts, so you may get a reroute along the way. Good luck, and have fun! 👍

      Jeep from Kathmandu to Salleri should be about 3000NPR per person. Then you either walk to Lukla (2-3 days) or take two more jeeps (3000-5000NPR each) to Paiya and walk the rest (4-5 hours).

It was with a family, and one of the sons was asking me some weird questions, like was I afraid, was I carrying a knife, etc. I had a feeling if I’d stayed at that lake that night I might have been robbed in the evening…or worse, so I kept going over the ridge far away from any roads. 😬

      We ran into a solo hiker going opposite our direction (North to South) who was doing just that. He said it was spectacular, but you really need to pay attention to water sources in the north. The interior of the country is very dry and can have long stretches without water sources. We used a Black Diamond I-Tent. It’s a bit heavy (5 lbs) and not very spacious, but fully waterproof and dust proof if fully zipped up. I would avoid an ultralight tent with a lot of ventilation as the winds will blow rain and/or dust into your tent. In some places, you’ll get very wet, in other places you’ll be covered with dust by morning.

      @@MiguelGomezMountainRunner Thanks. I think I want to go at the end of June. I hope to avoid the crowds. Part 2 of your adventure is truly amazing. It is the reason for me to head in that direction as well. The deserted and empty landscape. Love it!

    Awesome father and son time! 👍🏽 I will return in Iceland this July and redo the Laugavevur trail. 1st time was in 2018 but I didn't have a drone and my action camera was faulty. I will also bring my bike and cycle other parts of Iceland.

      Yea, unfortunately all the bloggers and points enthusiasts have gotten the word out and now the sweet spot is ruined 😂 Seriously though, I have been seeing SEA-DOH availability directly on Qatar Airways pretty far in advance, and Avios are much easier to transfer into than Alaska. 😉

      The trip was amazing, to the point that we are considering doing it again in 2025 now that we are more confident with Iceland's F-roads. For 2027, we are thinking of shipping our van to Argentina to drive along the Andes. Where is your next adventure taking you?

    • @MiguelGomezMountainRunner
      @MiguelGomezMountainRunner 7 месяцев назад

      That sounds awesome! I can’t imagine how expensive it would be to ship your van from the UK to Argentina 😬 So in March, I did the Everest base camp 3 passes trek with two friends (vids coming soon), in July taking the family to Japan, then in Feb 2025 planning on climbing Aconcagua. 🤞

    Your video really captured the trail. I did one of the first R2R2R's back in the early 90's, also in about 19 hours. We added some miles on the Tonto to make it an even 50. We went in May so we had much longer daylight. It was in the 20's at 4am at the south rim, six foot snow drifts at the north rim, 90 degrees at Phantom Ranch by late afternoon, and in the 20's again at the south rim at 10pm. Fun.

      Yea, my finers were so cold at the north rim that I could barely hold onto my poles. That trip tought me that even when running, you should never skimp on warm clothing! 🥶

    Miguel, your suggestions are spot on. I did one of the first R2R2R's back in the early 90's, also in about 19 hours. We added some miles on the Tonto to make it an even 50. Your preparation, gear, fuel, clothing and training is almost exactly what we did back then. My favorite trail food was a baked potato smothered in butter. We did at least one long hike or run every few weeks, starting at 20 miles and culminating in a couple of 40 milers. Also, we reduced our mileage the last two weeks so we were fully recovered. We went in May and it was in the 20's at 4am at the south rim, six foot snow drifts at the north rim at noon, 90 degrees at Phantom Ranch by late afternoon, and in the 20's again at the south rim at 10pm. Fun. I will offer a suggestion. I don't like the idea of counting on random folks on the trail to report if you haven't come back. They might be helpful in locating your corpse after a search starts the next day, but none of the dozen strangers you talk to is going to notice your failure to return to civilization, much less report it. A better plan is to have a single person who has your itinerary and has agreed to be waiting for you, either in person at the hotel or somewhere by a phone.

      Incredible, sounds like an awesome run! Yea, I kept trying to recruit someone to go with me, but no one was crazy enough ;) I did leave my itinerary and gps tracks with my wife and a good friend in Seattle, but if something had gone wrong, by the time they reported me missing, it probably would have been too late. This was the trip that convinced me to spend the money on an InReach Mini.

    Exactly what you would expect from Americans: come to Iceland and complain about them being paranoid. You guys really need to get off of your high horse. This is not your country nor your culture. Have respect for other cultures for once, have a closer look at your country where people REALLY get murdered.

    Curious, as I know nothing of Iceland, are there any trees on your hike, or is it all artic tundra?

    • @MiguelGomezMountainRunner
      @MiguelGomezMountainRunner 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Robert, there are very few trees throughout Iceland currently. The coastlines have some vegetation, but mostly grass and small shrubs. The interior highlands are very stark, dusty, and surprisingly dry (except near rivers and glaciers). The interior is very primordial and other-worldly. As I understand, the original settlers cut down almost all the birch forests that inhabited the coastal areas to burn and build houses.
