Some reporter in Calif. deduced that the flick didn't make $600M but ~$2M, but it was likely higher, b/c I recently read how it made $1M in only a few wks of release. It's likely no one really knows how much $ it made, but it's likely more than Debbie Does Dallas, ...Green Door, & Insatiable, despite folks saying how much $ they made. Who knows? But thanks to your guest for confirming that Chuck Traynor was a bad guy. Many folks say it's a he said/she said thing (it's not). To its credit, the NY Times described Traynor as a "gutter Svengali." Good for them! Thanks again! :-)

There's a very practical reason why Linda Lovelace didn't appear in porn in her later years, despite your guest's assertion that she did: She wouldn't show her bare legs. All of her post-Deep Throat photos (even in Deep Throat Pt. 2) show her w/high boots & long pants, & even her Legs magazine/show "spread," if you will, don't show her bare legs. She said that Traynor would often knock her down & she'd curl into a fetal position as he viciously kicked her w/cowboy boots, leaving her w/lifelong bruises & leg deformities that she covered w/surgical stockings for the rest of her life. So, it seems like your guest didn't research Linda Lovelace that well & shouldn't be saying things about her that aren't true. :-)

The reason Chambers likely didn't branch into mainstream films is b/c Traynor likely wanted a quick buck. Lovelace said he'd pimp her out to pay for dr. visits, & he seemed to use women to make money. I"m curious to read your guest's book. Chambers appeared in at least 2 S&M movies (Beyond DeSade & Never a Tender Moment -- where she was beaten w/boards??). Despite her claim that she was an independent woman, it sounded like Traynor was in control & acting out his own fantasies thru her. Gloria Steinem (in Every Day Acts & ...Rebellions) reported that witnesses said Traynor refused to allow Chambers to use the bathroom b4 a TV interview & during most interviews reporters noticed that Chambers needed a verbal OK from Traynor b4 she'd answer questions. Good grief. Thanks for the great background & interview, however! I enjoyed listening to this & will read your guest's book. Thank you! :-)

Linda "Lovelace" told Donahue she was paid $1,250 for Deep Throat, but said Traynor took it b/c money would help her escape him. I forget where I read it (besides Wikipedia), but DT apparently cost $22K (perhaps it was "The Other Hollywood," by Leggs MacNeil; it's about the porn industry). Folks dismissed Lovelace's claims that Traynor beat her, that he controlled her (saying she needed his permission to use the bathroom, sometimes denied), & repeated what he told her to say in public (that she "loved" sex, etc.). Traynor told E!'s doc on Lovelace, "I never beat her," but he admitted to GQ magazine (Sept. '87) that he thought nothing of smacking his woman, saying it made them "close." I read that on the news stand, but the online reprint excises those sentences. GQ told me they have the right to not reprint the entire original text of their articles. Connecticut magazine interviewd Chambers's brother, who said Traynor was a bad guy; otrs said he was a "suitcase pimp." And sex reporter Eric Danville said Lovelace cried 30 yrs later, begging him not to include mention or photos of one movie Traynor forced her to do at gunpoint. She did see DT ~30 yrs later for the 1st time & signed Danville's bk in NYC at a special screening. I take exception that the guest said she "returned" to porn later in life "which know one knows about." Unless he can provide titles, that is NOT true. And she didn't want to discuss "that" movie I just mentioned w/talk show hosts (It's barely mentioned in her 2 books), & b/c of this I doubt Very Much she'd return to porn for ANY reason.

Linda "Lovelace" didn't go back into porn movies; she starred in the awful "Linda Lovelace for President" & something else, but in her later years she did some photo shoot for Legs magazine. To my knowledge -- & I've been following her story for years -- she did NOT return to porn movies.

I'm eager to read your book! Deep Throat is cited as grossing $600M, but that's an FBI estimate & included ticket sales & merchandise. Since there were no real records of ticket sales & the money was weighed (!), it's been said that the total gross of the flick was $2M, b/c it wasn't allowed to play everywhere (frequent raids, lawsuits, etc.). The Perano (sp) brothers & Bryanston films (sp) screwed over everyone involved with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where the actors got very little money for their performances. The flick was a massive hit (~$30M at the time, well over $100M today). How unfair it is!

Hi! 57-y/o guy here; I grew up in Binghamton, NY, & Rod Serling grew up just down the street from my high school, which was the next block over from the famous park where the Twilight Zone's "Walking Distance" takes place. Cops raided The Strand theatre where Deep Throat was playing, the next street up from the courthouse, where a jury decided the film wasn't obscene for the community. I'm not sure if it was the only city in NY state that screened it, but locals always cited this as "Binghamton, home to Deep Throat." Big deal, right? It played in its initial run, then again in the early '80s.

I was just starting to enjoy this when Newborn drops the bomb that he's a republican hater. For years now after all the hate, lies, anti-American behavior, etcetera-etcetera that we've seen from the democrats, he's still hanging on.

What a great movie this was i was 1 year old when deep throat came out in 1972 i didnt see it until i was in my 20s in the 90s i am a gay man but i have to say deep throat inspired me in so many ways ❤😂😢 i love you so much your 1 fan for life
