    Got so much value from this! Here are my notes. Hope it helps potential listeners: I really liked the bit about IIoT. I thought I was one of the few techs that still was not clear about what exactly it was. I feel better now that giants like you guy are still pondering it :) No powerpoints allowed! ... love it! DataOps - get the data, put some context around it, send it out. Scaling is easier and less expensive. They always want to expand. Really love the example of the automonous guided vehicles. Better if IT and OT are involved. Customers can over-rotate on contextualization. Do too much at one time. Challenge of ROI. Early use cases. Talk to the operators. Data governance. There will always manually data. Scraping csv files. I could not stop laughing re: 3D printing ... ha ha ha. Future ... edge data lake. Datalake ... mass scalable storage ... contextualized data, query at scale, provide ETL tools. Edge compute that can run docker ... data centers are coming back. AI to assist operators ... the possible future. There are still a alot of infrastructure issues to be solved before we can fully take advantage of the AI. Another cool example ... mqtt sensors on conveyors to detect when a motor is going bad. DataOps is bi-directional. Vlad .. micro use cases ... I like that! Future - Aaron: - cloud east manufacturing. - new protocol from OPC foundation. Dave ... one protocol to rule them all ... ha ha ha. Dave ... Start cutting out the old protocols. Career advice, aaron ... electrical engineering ... lower level stuff is importance, pragmatic marketing, don't look at AI as a threat. Book recommendation: countdown to zero day.

    Employees just hear the part they want. They usually feel the QM is not qualified to tell them better ways to do their jobs. They may be right. Think about it, what is the actual difference of a plain manager vs a QM? It's mostly that the QM is there to boss them on forced outcomes *without* knowing better how to do their job, otherwise you would have to pay them like a straight manager. It's in the definition

    Another thing about version control particular to Rockwell: Its a single file. If you save the project with a date and comment well, there's a form of version control. With Beckhoff, there are hundreds of files, libraries, etc. It is also on a Visual Studio platform, which make version control applicable.

    With my consulting customers, I have many times signed an NDA that I have marked up and submitted to their lawyers first. They are hiring me for my expertise and productivity and part of the value I bring is a growing library of generic function that does not incorporate any of their proprietary technology. But I do have frameworks for things like, generic motor control state machines, and more, and I’m trying to add TDD frameworks as well. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

      I worked at a peanut butter facility, and although we'd have occasional pumps that would leak peanut butter all over, I've not seen it touch the PLCs. I can only assume it was something Dave experienced or heard about at some smaller plants, and I'd also guess that they probably just got the peanut butter on electronics (ex-remote IO) rather than the actual PLC. But you know how those stories get told...

      For hardware, two words: Modularity and monolith The beckhoff systems use a miniature DIN rail slice and their PLC is exceptionally expandable. The Allen-Bradley hardware is much more monolithic. It’s configurable and expandable, but to me it’s kind of like the difference between a PC and a minicomputer. On the software side, both beckhoff XAE/TC3 and Rockwell logix5000 utilize visual studio. The beckhoff stuff is Codesys-based while Rockwell wrote their own. In the United States, Rockwell/Allen Bradley has a dominant market position, and in the control industry it’s been said that nobody ever got fired for choosing Alan Bradley. But if you took a chance on back off and screwed up, you could conceivably be looking for work. Internationally Siemens is the dominant player and beckhoff is more readily received. You will find similar architectures as well, in fact, they used to be partnered with Wago, and Kollmorgen slices are just repackaged beckhoff . Personally Beckhoff EtherCAT is a vastly superior real time network architecture over Rockwell’s ethernet/IP. I’ve programmed Rockwell/Alan Bradley for about 10 years and beckhoff for 3. Back off also has a really cool integrated CPU solution and has developed significant PC based real time technology themselves. So for example, on my Beckhoff CX2043, I can run windows on two cores of my four core Ryzen processor and run real-time stuff on the other two. That’s slick! Remember, opinions are like bellybuttons… Everyone’s got one-and mine usually stinks! 🤣 But those are my two cents.

    • @automationconsultingllc3994
      @automationconsultingllc3994 8 месяцев назад

      Huge differences, Beckhoff is basically CodeSYS on a Visual Studio base. Most coding will probably be using ST. Ladder editor is not to the level of Rockwell. But... software is free to learn on, simulation and HMI built in. Also, Beckhoff is a computer running on Windows, communications is done similarly to other Windows systems. Rockwell software is ridiculously expensive with no real "practice" platform. Hardware also much more expensive, at least for 5000 based systems.

    LOVE Josh's example use case for wire shark - it only reinforces that IT and OT collaboration is NEEDED. IT guys might have networking experience that can improve operations, and OT guys understand the processes and systems to advise whether there should be "cross-traffic" between disparate machinery, hence where the COLLABORATION piece come in 🤝
