NVC for All of Us
A nonviolent approach acknowledges a reality that is often not named in social justice spaces-that we are all in the same soup, shaped by white supremacist culture and dominant systems that fail to nurture belonging for people who have been marginalised. How can we find community to step into deep practice of NVC and principles of nonviolence? How can we hold care for ourselves when being confronted by racism and other forms of oppression? How can we communicate with clarity and in a way that affirms our commitment to social justice without othering those who are elsewhere in their journey?

Facilitating Under Fire: Community Care and Repair Session #6
Просмотров 172 месяца назад
Are you a group or meeting facilitator, convener of spaces where things can get emotionally charged, where there are difficult conversations, or tensions between participants? In Facilitating Under Fire, we explore how to respond with care to: - Crying, upset, expressions of anger - Racist or oppressive language (and appropriately address the impact) - People who are marginalised - Diverging ne...
From Coping to Thriving, Community Care and Repair Session 5 with Kazu Haga
Просмотров 262 месяца назад
In times of such urgency, it is important for those working for social change to care for ourselves so we can be at our best. However, capitalism and other forms of separation have taken away our ability to engage in practices that allow us to truly thrive. In this workshop, participants will be guided in a process of discernment about what self-care practices each person has access to, and how...

Movements of Belonging: Learning the skills to be truly collaborative.
Просмотров 223 месяца назад
We don’t get a lot of training on how to show up in ways that are truly collaboratively. We are trained to be the leader, the expert, to take the lead. This gathering is a unique experience of collaborating, learning how to offering my piece but not more than my piece. The interpersonal is a key part of what we are wanting to nourish. What does it mean to be in powerfully connected relationship...
Movements of Belonging: An experience of working through conflict and we come out stronger.

We do not have systems for holding each other accountable with compassion. This is a place to disrupt that conditioning. An experience of working through challenges and conflict where we come out fortified and stronger.

Movements of Belonging: Paying attention to the inner work that supports the outer work.

In social justice spaces, we emphasize systemic analysis and critiquing the system. We pay less attention to the inner work to support the outer work of our movements. Without healing, we recreate systems that cause harm.
Movements of Belonging: The community is the star!
Просмотров 113 месяца назад
There are no stars in the room. Instead of the focus being on individual “headliners”,the community is the “headliner”. Everyone is invited to hold and co-hold what is happening in the space. So few of us have had the opportunity to explore the power that can come from community.
Movements of Belonging: It is possible to create a world of belonging right now!
Просмотров 193 месяца назад
This type of gathering creates a container of universal belonging faster than any other I have experienced. In our movements we can be so quick to call each other out, and struggle to resolve conflict in healthy ways. This is a space for movement leaders to experience belonging to be reminded that this kind of community building is possible.
Blame Free Feedback
Просмотров 263 месяца назад
So often feedback leaves us in a place of feeling defended, not seen or understood. In the communities we live and gather in, feedback can often weaken our experience of belonging. In our relationships, we may struggle to respond to feedback or to make space for sharing what is true and meaningful for us. In this session, we explore how we can use tools from Nonviolent Communication to clearly ...

Dissolving Judgments that Harm Relationships
Просмотров 493 месяца назад
In this workshop, we differentiate between judgments and discernment. We then work through a process of identifying the judgments that we hold of someone, recognizing our needs that were not met by something they said or did, and then shifting to releasing those judgments by guessing the needs behind the actions of the other person.

What is the definition of "White"?

    • @necessarytroublecollective2237
      @necessarytroublecollective2237 2 года назад

You can start here. In short, it is consciously created. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_people

      @JK_JK_JK 2 года назад

@@necessarytroublecollective2237 That definition is so broad as to have no meaning.

I actually find it quite meaningful. It points to the creation of whiteness for racist means. Knowing the purpose of why it was created, means that we have some information to form how we respond to it and we can decide if we want to be defined by it or resist the box it paints people in. There are other sources I can point you to. If you like long form, then Nell Irvin Painter's The History of White People is thorough in its examination.

If you are black, are you more likely to be murdered by "White Supremacists" or are you more likely to be murdered by blacks such as Crips and Bloods? I think we all know the answer to that. Today, the most likely cause of death of young black men is to be murdered by another young black man. The dangers White Supremacist represent is a tiny fraction of the danger blacks represent to other blacks. To say any different is just a lie and everyone in the hood knows it. So, stop your lying and stop murdering one another.

This past year, most of the audio books I've listened to have intentionally been by BIPOC and people whose lived experience is different than my own. It has been AMAZING!!! Not only have I enjoyed the stories and been challenged by them, but I've also gained a broader perspective of what life is like for others.

I was surprised when I recently learned that "Master Bedroom" was actually a slavery term. (I had never thought of that -- and realize that I need to educate myself on more such terms that I might be using without realizing their origins). While watching a recent TV show, I saw the designers refer to the largest bedroom as "Primary Bedroom" -- and although that sounded funny to my ears at first, I realized that they were intentionally avoiding the racist term "Master Bedroom". I'll be using the term "Primary Bedroom" or "Largest Bedroom" going forward. OK -- I'm off to click on the links you provided to learn what other words and phrases I will be retiring from my vocabulary. Thank you for bringing these things to our attention!

Such good info! I think most people feel uncomfortable in this situation, but don't know how to respond. This was really helpful, having you walk us through the steps to share our own story -- and in doing so, help others understand that what they did is wrong (but in a sensitive way). Thank you!

A very thought-provoking article. "He [Mohawk Council of Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Otis Simon] told me that the whole concept of buying and selling land was foreign to his people, who believed that the land belonged to future generations and was the responsibility of current generations to care for."

You're helping me to see how invasive racist structures are in all areas of life. As a white person, I didn't "see" it. But by shining your spotlight on a new "thread" of racism each day, you're helping me to see some of the ways racism has infiltrated my life, and how to change that. Thank you!

That last paragraph is powerful: "We used to think it was normal and just to own people (i.e. wives and slaves). Thankfully, we now know that this is not morally, ethically, or even rationally possible. Do we need to evolve our understanding of land ownership in the same way? What would it mean to caretake or steward the land instead?" I've never thought about land in those terms -- but will, going forward. Thank you for sharing these important perspectives. I'm really enjoying this series!
