Level Up Your Guitar Playing in 2025
Do you want to level up your guitar playing next year? Do you know how to play, but find yourself noodling over the same chords not going anywhere? Well this video may not be the instructional "how-to" that you're looking for, but it is an encouragement to take actionable steps to level up your playing.

Yamaha Revstar: The Yamaha Revstar Is A Force To Be Reckoned With

The Yamaha Revstar RS502T was such a cool find for me. I was on a P90 kick and couldn't get enough all guitars that were loaded with them. I saw Chris Buck playing a Revstar that had P90's and the search was on after that. I knew I needed a Revstar. So my search began and finally I had a Revstar coming to the door. I was not disappointed with what I saw. This is some of the best fit and finish ...

PRS Silver Sky: Just Another Strat?

guitar and coffee great combination, some note to your spraying-habit, i think at the long run when you spray your beans it isnt advantageous for your grinding mill, rather brush it would be better.
I appreciate the tip 👍 what beans Are you using? Always love trying a new cup.
@@GoodTonesandCoffee thanks buddy, at the moment I taste the italian brand lavazza from Turin-Italy 7/10 roasting intensity, but I always change the beans from time to time.
My goal is to just improve, I'm pretty much still at the beginning, so I want to learn new challenging songs and hopefully get down some techniques and concepts too. I think I found the passion of my life so now it's just a matter of practice
cool,
2025 Goal: learn a new song or concept a week
I have dreams of the Revstar in white.
Loving the vibe. Think I'll have to stick around.
I started the Paul Davids course during Covid but never finished. I want to finish it this year and just be more comfortable playing by ear. 15 minutes a day hopefully. 😊
I purchased a subscription to Truefire and starting with a course on the CAGED system. I’ve been playing rhythm acoustic for years and decided I wanted to improve and grow as a guitar player this year. So, here’s to woodshedding!
New stuff for me is learning finger/hybrid picking. A few songs I know already make light use the technique, but this new year I'll be striving to make it a more natural part of my playing. Also have a few TrueFire corses I aim to complete. This new year is likely to be defined by woodshedding, with the goal to play with more people in the following year. Five Watt World is a great resource-- also Ask Zac is great too. Zac Childs is the one who's inspired me to pursue the hybrid picking thing... and Tim Lerch's interviews on Five Watt World that have bumped me down the path of a Jazzier expression (he has several TrueFire courses). Love that Gibson-- sure is pretty, and sounds good too!
Shred
🤣 I can't
That practicing vs playing thing is something I plan to get serious about this next year. Recently I’ve been finding more enjoyment in acoustic playing too. I just need to force myself to be more creative in my playing overall and what I’m doing right now is just replaying what I already know. I like this style of video. Motivated me to get things done. Love the background change too!
Thanks, man! I just got signed up for the all access on Trufire. I plan on going through some courses on it to get better this year. I'm at a plateau and I can feel it.
Harry & David coffee is my jam. Dunkin' and Starbucks, noooo. Always used heavy & jazz picks but now medium & thin have added a lot to my playing. Using lighter strings with a bit higher action as well. Love flatwounds on bass, to me sounds more authentic. The extra tension works for me. Dry signal with a bit of crunch is how I plan to play plugged in this year. Much more nylon acoustic finger picking and regular acoustic strumming patterns also on the agenda this year. Ukelele and mandolin too. Happy New Year. 🎉
Never tried them before! I'll have to look into them. Lighter strings really made me change my approach. I play too hard. The lighter strings force me to work on that.
I really don’t like Starbucks either I agree with the over roasting. I’ve been wanting to try flat wound strings for a while I was going to put them on my bass first. To level up my playing I guess I’m building a pedal board currently I have the board and power supply no pedals yet though.
Yeah man! I have used them on bass before and love the sound they have. Different. Man, that's great! Make sure to share your progress!
@ I should put some of my videos up on RUclips
@@wayneforster20 100% man!
What are your plans to level up your playing this next year?
he went to prs for $$$ he needs to fund his million dollar watch obsession
🤣 Could be. That lifestyle creep comes in hot!
I just got mine. Unlike my other SE’s it needed some tweaks on the whammy bar setting, but like every SE it came out of the box in tune and intonated. A perfect set up. The pickups have virtually NO 60 cycle hum. Overall great for the money. Tuners? Put your strings on right, stretch them out and set up the instrument and it shouldn’t be a problem.
This is only my second SE guitar, but I am very pleased with the work that I've seen.
Very Cool, Thankyou. Interesting, Informative and Entertaining Demo/Review Video. Awesome. Amazing looking, sounding Guitar and playing. Only have my 1984 Yamaha Acoustic 'first guitar' and Yamaha Pacifica, both Awesome. And definitely hope to get a Revstar in near future, always have impressed. All the Best. Cheers
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, and hope you get the Revstar soon.
Waffle waffle! Get to the point. Also do your home work. "i think its a compound radius but i'm not sure"?!? Also don't take his advice, the neck feel is clunky a cheap fat like a budget epiphone. Its also a crap fingerboard radius that cause choking all over the neck . You'll have to settle for a higher action. Not surprised JM approved all the cheap crap on this guitar. Kinda sums up his playing for me. Grossly overrated.
@@garywebb911 Would love to see a video of your opinions.
I really liked your eastman video, and so I decided to see what else you have reviewed and I am an acoustic guy who is exploring the world of electric guitar so I can practice quieter with headphones. I picked up a cheap squire affinity strat and Im not wild about the sound I get from it. This revstar is one of the exact models I am looking into, along with the Gretsch G5210-P90. Thanks for the review of this guitar and hope you had a Merry Christmas.
Hope you had a merry Christmas as well! Exploring the world of electric from acoustic has been fun. Lots of learning. Has helped me as an acoustic player as well, so it seems.
Except for professionals guitars are a luxury. As much as I'd love to have a great guitar at an unbelievable price anything that funds a repressive regime such as Xi's CCP Chinese 🇨🇳 one is a deal breaker. Tibet is a vassal state. One million Uighar Muslims are imprisoned in mega "reeducation centers" ( huge prisons) for the crime of being an ethnic minority whose identity and religion threatened absolute control. All Chinese citizens endure constant surveillance where jaywalking means a conviction, automatic fine and social demerits that can prohibit travel and video game bans for starters. This denial of inalianable human rights doesn't stop at their borders. Apple, Google, X, and Disney are among corporations who must cooperate with censorship and sharing information on private citizens elsewhere when they do business there. Long term expansion of the economic, political and military agenda has been wildly successful. The Silk Road includes artificial islands to support its second largest naval fleet and ocean trade. Cities built along the roads and rails extend to the Middle East. China is not the only totalitarian state and others, including the largest and oldest democracies ( India and the U.S.A.) are going in that direction. Music is about freedom and celebration of the human spirit. Let's not invest in its destruction. Buy responsibly.
I have a Silver Sky SE and love it. I also have a similarly priced Fender (Player Strat) and the overall quality is better on the SE. I also think it feels better to play. As far as the tremelo, for some reason PRS/Mayer have it bottomed out against the body like it’s a fixed bridge. Even though I don’t use the trem, I decided to float the bridge just slightly.
I have heard that you could do that (since recording) and may end up doing the same.
I picked a well-used, kinda beat up one last summer. Lots of mojo and feels good to play. I dig it
They really are a cool guitar.
Picked up a lefty SE when it was released recently. My 1980’s American-made Fender Strat hasn’t left its case since.
That seems to be a pretty common theme!
Worst neck I’ve ever played
Wow, usually people love it. What neck do you prefer?
@ slimer, modern C. The most comfortable neck is on my Danocaster or my Novo Serus. Dustie Waring PRS is also super comfy.
@@alfonsoobando3616 I'd love to play one of those Novo's.
I had a chance to pick one of these up really cheap 20 years ago and I regret it that sounds amazing. Great review.
Thanks so much! 🙏
Revstars were only launched in 2015. Could it be a Yamaha SG you are regretting?
I've had my E6SS-TC for about a year and a half, love it, outstanding quality and sound, it looks very much like a J35 but sounds richer and more balanced.
I'm consistently impressed with this brand. I bet yours sounds great!
I really enjoyed the sound of that E6D 😅@@GoodTonesandCoffee
Since my first electric guitar was a Yamaha I've always kept an eye on the company. Then several years later I discovered Triumph-- Rik Emmett played a beautiful white/gold Yamaha SG3000, and buddy I was sold! Those were too expensive for me back then, and as years went by the company discontinued the model. SO, that's the first thing that comes to mind when I see these new Revstar guitars--- a modern take on their SG series. It's featured in his "Star Licks" video tape (it's what we had LONG before the internet LOL!). BTW, the video is available on RUclips; just search "Rik Emmett Star Licks Guitar Lessons". Even today that tape sets a high standard for video lessons ;)
I played one in a guitar shop and loved it. I love giant frets and heavy guitars. lol!😂 I still want to own one, one day.
Hope you can! I'm rooting for you!
I really like the style of this video! Having the sound of the guitar in the background the whole time is really nice. Seems like you can focus more on your conversation about the guitar rather than trying to decide when to play! Really like the relaxed feel! Great job bro!
Thanks man. I think I'm gonna roll with this format for a bit. Trying to level up every time!
Had a dark green v1 RS502T and I loved it but eventually parted for reasons you mentioned: It was heavy and the frets were too tall - I felt the bumps on my finger tips when sliding up and down. The new ones played and sounded great also. Chambered but the body is a little bigger so still close in weight.
I know I could get a re-fret on it, but that kind of goes against the allure of value for the money once you start trying to swap and upgrade it all. That's unfortunate with the new ones still being heavy, though!
A friend of mine bought one and it could not be intonated properly: the bridge was not in the proper position and the top two strings’ saddles needed to be moved further towards the neck than was possible. I had a similar issue with a Schecter guitar last year.
Hate to hear that! I don't have that issue with this one
I’ve been really wanting one. They sound amazing
Yeah man, if you can get one, I don't think you'll be sorry. What's your favorite course to play?
@ so I’m in the eastern panhandle of WV so I play a lot on VA and MD. My Favorite course of all time is probably Ditto Farms in Hagerstown, MD. Has a good mix of open and heavily wooded. Being in the woods though we have some of the tightest courses in the country which is my favorite type of course play. More trees the better. I haven’t really been playing lately I tore my calf in September of last year and been having some shoulder problems. I had to take steroids and I think I hurt my rotator cuff. I played the other day and my shoulder hurt so bad. I’m trying to get out more. I have been spending a lot more time standing in rivers trying to catch trout lately playing a lot more guitar too.
@@GoodTonesandCoffee I love the sound of P90s I do want my next guitar to have them. I’ve only owned a Strat with single coils every other guitar I’ve had has had humbuckers.
Yeah man, all of those activities are good choices. The P90 is just a super sound. A single coil with girth. I love them. I installed some Seymour Duncan antiquity series P90s on another guitar and it is 🔥
@ what’s your favorite course
SE tuner blow simple fact worse tuner out there 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Not a fan.
Have you tried the Yamaha Revstar line? What are your impressions?
Wanted to say Merry Christmas friend!!
Just take out one or two springs and readjust the claws to get a smoother floating Trem. It works great that way!
Awesome! Will do that
Immediately jumped on the phone to place a preorder on the lefty silver sky when it went live. i got the Storm Grey body w/ rosewood fingerboard. Absolutely love it. It's pretty much what I wished my old 2005 MiM Strat would be like. I find all 5 pickup positions useable and a chunky neck that feels like home (my #1 for years was a 2017 Trad Les Paul. The neck on those are pretty hefty) The Silver Sky's 8.5" radius threw me off a bit, but after a little truss rod tweaking, the guitar really came to life.
They certainly have a great feel! And sound!
It’s not a gripe when 10000 other people complain about the pickups the running machines and the bridge problems and I would know considering I have se models and the crap pickups but the 9 1980s and 1990s I have will never be sold by me
What all you got?
lol you full of it
😂
I love mine! Great deal and great strat guitar! ❤️
👍 Glad you're enjoying it!
Hi from France, Thanks for your video, is there a great difference between the SE and the usa model ? In the same price, do you prefer the silver sky se or a Fender Player (mexico made), Thank you for yours responses !
Welcome to the channel! I can feel a difference in the neck shape and the finishes. The pickups do sound different, but I don't know if I could say one sounds better. Just different. I haven't put my hands on the MIM Player Strat yet to compare. May look into that.
Luckily I played the SE Silver Sky version before playing the Core. Once I got a Core in my hands the choice was clear-- the SE is the one to pick. They are so close in terms of feel and quality that I couldn't justify the extra cost of the Core. Now that I've watched all 12 of your videos, I'd like to know more about your Crate amp. Had you not mentioned it in an earlier video, I would have thought it was an old Peavy Classic 50-- judging by the looks of it. Many years ago I had several Crate amps that were all geared toward hard rock, where this one looks like it's a blues influenced model (based only on the tweed covering). Anyway, Merry Christmas!
Man you're the real McCoy! This amp is the Club Vintage 50. My dad got it from his dad. Has the EL84 tubes in it. I've come to be very fond of it. Mostly because it's what I've used for years now. I also have a Trace Elliot Velocette that is a great one to take to small gigs.
Looks like a great guitar! I have an OCD quirk to preferring durability and ease of maintenance, which usually steers me toward bolt-on neck guitars. As such, the first word in acoustic guitars for me is Taylor; the bolt-on necks and laminated tops of those made in Mexico models speak to my OCD :D Eastman make very fine guitars, and if I were in the market for a traditionally made (i.e. set neck) they would at the top of my list-- right next to Yamaha which I always admire when hanging out at our local music shop. But in very short order I find myself back in the electric section LOL! And yes-- the reason for the season! Through the eloquence of Sir Linus Van Pelt quoting Luke 42; "Lights, please..."
There have been some Yamahas that I've heard that I'd trade half my gear for. I have a good friend who exclusively plays one from the 80's and it is one of my favorite sounding acoustics.
Cool guitar! I very nearly bought one-- ordered it online, waited a week for delivery, opened it up... the only thing I liked about it was the neck shape. There were some QC issues so I returned it the next day. Didn't even plug it in. Why? Because a few days earlier I played an SE version at our local shop-- so, when the Core model arrived I knew right away there was not enough difference between the Core and SE *for me* to justify the expense. Honestly I'm more of a Tele guy anyway, and as such I ended up going with the PRS Tele instead ;) If ever I was in the market for a Strat, I'd go PRS SE for sure-- great guitars!
I'm a Tele man at heart. I JUST got into acquiring strats to see how they fair. I still move towards the teles, though.
LOVE the Telecaster! To lighten the load on my back, I sold my two heavy guitars and purchased two lighter weight replacements: A PRS NF53 and a Myles Kennedy signature model (PRS Teles). One weighs 6 lbs, the other 6.75 lbs. So those have inspired a bunch of things for me. Love your 78!
I've yet to play one of the NF53s or any of their variants. Would love to! My local shop doesn't carry a lot of PRS. They always have a Silver Sky in there (makes sense because of their popularity) but that's about it.
@@GoodTonesandCoffee Your local shop not having one is pretty typical. The nearest to me has been minimum 2-hr drive each way-- and when I was ready to make the purchase, both shops were out of stock and now word on when they'd get replacements. One reason I suspect is that the PRS webpage categorizes these under "Speciality", so maybe they're making a limited batch each year? As far as I can tell, neither model seems to have made a big splash, so maybe these will be a bit harder to come by...?
Staying relaxed is something I have been trying lately as well. A simple concept that I never thought about until I was going through a TrueFire lesson with Eric Haugen, where he mentions it. That was a bit of a revelation for me. Then a few months ago Uncle Larry suggested keeping a light touch with the fretting hand which was another reminder-- and confirmation-- that I need to lighten up. Still working on it, but I've noticed a big difference when playing in our church band; by intentionally staying loose, I find I play smoother and easier, with less fatigue. Again, it's something I'm working on ;)
While I feel as though I have done good relaxing tension in the shoulder, I find that I have a heavy hand. I'll get fired up about what I'm playing and get carried away. Which is funny because I know I always play better/smoother when I focus on just letting the guitar say what it needs to say.
Nothing wrong with making a guitar your own! Me? Yeah, I've done a lot. Most memorable was taking a Fender "Highway-One" Strat, disassembling it, sanding down the body and painting it in Van Halen stripes (meticulously following his Franky patterns from old photos), then lightly sanding, and darkening the neck using a bit of ground up pencil led (graphite). It came out fantastic if I do say so myself LOL! After a few years, I sold it to fund something else. Since then I've painted several other things in the Van Halen theme ;)
That's awesome, man! I'd love to see pictures of that!
@@GoodTonesandCoffee I'll see what I can do ;)
@@GoodTonesandCoffee Sent an email with a few links. Hope you get a kick out of it!
@@monahantp3767 got it! It's awesome!
What? Fender doesn't have enough models in its HUGE lineup that PRS has to make one? Gotta wonder ...
What I'm doing to sound better? Start by dialing up a good overdriven amp setting (with a few effects) and leave that be. Then I control crunch, or clean tones using the guitars volume/tone controls. I use both controls a lot, and switch between pickups at times. Stings are pure-nickel (DR, Ernie Ball, D'Addario, etc.). Usually using 10s, but I've played around with 8s & 9s-- 8s being more fun, and better when practicing using a light touch. Picks: standard Fender thin/medium/heavy depending on how energetic I'm feeling... also really like V-Picks "Freakishly Large Rounded" which is quite thick and has a tone much like that when using the flesh of the fingertips. Then of course much of what you talked about using picking location, palm muting, pick angle... There's so much a player can do when not distracted by a pedal-board LOL!
I have very few effects that I use. Not against them, just never used them. Outside of some breakup from the amp and reverb, I may throw a delay on (church music) or something like that. Uncle Larry has got me interested in an eq pedal, though.
@@GoodTonesandCoffee Ah yes-- the Boss GE-7 :D At church, I've been using my Helix and a free download called "MARS 74x TM". They've got a bunch of stuff happening there there I think, but as I said earlier, I set it and forget it LOL! Our worship leader also has a Helix-- that he never uses-- and keeps saying that we need to get together and spend a day figuring these things out... Maybe someday LOL :D
@@monahantp3767 haha I have one.. and have no idea how to use it. I may check out some of those free downloads.
Favorite thing about that guitar...? It's a Tele! I've got a real soft spot for any Telecaster (and the multitude of variants). Also, the P-90s... in 40 years, I've never played a guitar with P-90s... how's that possible?! Enjoying the videos-- spending a rainy afternoon on the channel ;)
