Had a cracked cylinder head in a Type 2 VW campervan fitted with the larger capacity engine from the 412 Varient. The crack was on the cylinder crown within the head. The glowing fin of the cracked part caused random backfiring especially on over run. Caused by trying to speed the vehicle to the indicated maximum on the speedometer. Only capable of sustained mid 60's criusing at best. Engine made pinging sounds after sustained motorway runs once parked up. An oil temperature guage would have indicated any signs of overheating.

What about a false reading of an oxygen sensor caused by a bad signal wire? Is this a possibility? I replaced catalytic converter and oxygen sensor but carbon monoxide is still about 5 percent. I replaced further throttle body, temperature sensor and map sensor (engine does not have a maf-sensor). Sparks are always black, although I even removed air filter.
