    Why are bridle straps needed? Sebastian Erard introduced double repetition mechanism in the grand piano in 1821, and "=" Robert Wornum - the "tape check" mechanism in upright piano in 1842. Robert Wornum constructed your the first upright piano in 1811. They were there before J. Hawkins about 1800 and J. Schmidt in 1780 - those upright pianos and the first Wornum's piano (1811) didn't have it yet of bridle straps (tape check) just as old grand piano in 18th and some oldest in 19th centuries didn't have double repetition too. "(...)The value of this tape lies mainly in the slight extra pull it manages to impart to the hammer butt when the hammer rebounds from the string, and after the back check has caught the hammer and been released by the release of the key. The tape would not have any special. value but for the fact that the hammer, having' been caught by the back check, naturally would hang a little on the release thereof, if it did not receive the gentle pull caused by the fall of the wippen with which the bridle tape connects it. The tape is, in fact, to the upright action what the repetition lever is to the grand. Until these two features had been devised and applied to their corresponding actions, the piano was an extremely imperfect instrument." The upright piano from 1842 year and after "(...) owes its present touch effect to the tape just as the touch delicacy of the grand is due to the repetition lever. Of course the grand action is the mor~ delicate and responsive of the two, for it possesses the double repetition. This the upright cannot have, not to mention the fact that the fall of the hammer through gravity is of course far more effective than its retraction by springs. The upright action blocks more easily than does the grand, and finger movement must be higher to secure repetition." The second function of bridle straps is "(...)to keep the levers up, and to prevent the jacks getting caught beneath the notches, when the action is removed from the piano and replaced."

      That’s helpful - what is the thought process behind that? I’ve seen some wood workers glue both sides of what they are working on and put some salt on one of the sides they are glue to eliminate slipping when they are clamping the two wood pieces together. Is the slipping/movement the reason not to do both sides? Thanks!

    Question please,; When checking/ setting back check will the measurement change according to how hard I strike the key? I did see I have to watch not to introduce after touch cuz it will move closer if I push it down too hard after the key was already struck........ Thank you..

  • @mrbreezeet1
    @mrbreezeet1 27 дней назад

    I just used a coat hanger wire with about a 1/4" "L " at the bottom, to adjust the let off. The let off adjusting screws were the eye hook style.

  • @mrbreezeet1
    @mrbreezeet1 27 дней назад

    So I set my blow distance and adjusted my lost motion, and set my let off to about 1/8". I made a 1/8" gauge from plastic and refrigerator magnets and carpet tape. Some of the let off was as far as a quarter inch to 3/8". However I don't see much of a difference to where it's easier to play or anything. The only thing I didn't do was set the back check. I didn't measure the back check but they appear to be anywhere from 3/4 of an inch to one inch. (I understand I am looking for about 5/8 of an inch) I am a little bit apprehensive to set the back checking because you have to bend those wires to adjust it and I'm worried about getting it even. But if I adjust my back check, will that make it any easier to play? I am looking for good repetitive key motion also.

    • @mrbreezeet1
      @mrbreezeet1 27 дней назад

      Also What would happen if say the back check was set to about 1/2" instead of 5/8"? Conversely what if it was set to say 1" instead of 5/8"

    • @mrbreezeet1
      @mrbreezeet1 27 дней назад

      I next need to make a 5/8" gauge for setting the back check. I looked at them again and actually only a few looked to be too great, (say, about one inch) again I need to find or make something to use as a 5/8" gauge.

    My experience: Shoe shine method of removing string grooves on the hammer is quick and goes a long way to improve tone, and will last longer than needling. You dont necessarily need to do a 3 hour complete hammer reshaping. Just remove the grooves (even if the hammer shape isn't optimal), spend 20-30 mins and the tone will drastically improve even without needling. At that point you can still needle to get even better results, that will last even longer now.

    • @TheArtisanSchool
      @TheArtisanSchool 24 дня назад

      I totally agree that doing a surfacing to the hammers is best prior to doing any needling. That being said, I have seen so many quick shoe shine jobs from other techs that have left the hammers with a weird oblong shape that then creates a weird shallow tone - So yes agreed - love the shoe shine hammer surfacing as long as the integrity of the hammer shape is kept=)

      @Jimmy-rd5ig 24 дня назад

      @TheArtisanSchool Interesting. Can you describe the shallow tone?

    • @TheArtisanSchool
      @TheArtisanSchool 24 дня назад

      Sure! The sound is thin, unfocused, and lacking of any real color.. When the hammer is improperly shaped to a kinda oblong shape it seems to loose the color and tone - Sorry if that description isn’t as helpful or precise

      Hello! Yeah, I would say that’s a little bit too much lost motion. I like it to just have just the slightest bit of play. You really shouldn’t be able to feel it on your finger at all. A lot of times what you can do is put one finger on the key and then another on the back of the key and just rock it back-and-forth and see if there’s a little bit of lost motion and that’s what we’re looking for. Hopefully that helps!

    I am not understanding how this is done with one mute. Can you explain. Looks very efficient

    • @TheArtisanSchool
      @TheArtisanSchool 12 дней назад

      It is super efficient! My mentor showed me this which was a game changer for me. The basic idea is that you will use your ETD (Electronic Tuning Device), your tuning hammer/lever, and a single rubber mute. If you look at the 3 strings - you place the mute in between the middle string and the far right string so that the far left string is ringing out. Tune that far left string (String1) to your ETD. After that string is in tune, move the rubber mute to the far right string and the far left string of the next note to the right. You tune that middle string (string 2) to string 1 and then once string 2 is in tune, you will move the mute to mute off string number 1 which is the far left string. This will allow you to tune the far right string to the middle string. Sorry if that seems overly complicated. We will do another video soon to show the exact process of muting. Stay tuned and be sure to subscribe so you dont miss it - CHEERS!

    I'm seeing different opinions on blow distance. You say 1.875 (48 mm). Reblitz gives that for grands, but gives 39-45 mm for uprights... What's the scoop?

    • @TheArtisanSchool
      @TheArtisanSchool Месяц назад

      Great question! I am a big fan of maximizing power through a greater blow distance if I can. Now that being said on a lot of uprights I can only get that 1 3/4 which is closer to what Reblitz says. I also tend to go a little deeper than 10mm which is why I tend to get a slightly wider blow distance. Again, this is what I shoot for but it doesn’t always happen =) CHEERS!

    • @mrbreezeet1
      @mrbreezeet1 Месяц назад

      I set mine (Baldwin Hamilton studio) to about 1 3/4" (temporarily with cardboard shims) and it seems notably easier to play. Conversely prior to shimming the hammer rail, I seem to have zero lost motion. However after temporarily shimming the hammer rail, my lost motion seems just about perfect, without having to adjust anything. Does that make sense to you? Seems to me if the felt and foam rubber had settled in and compressed, and that would explain no loss motion before and what seems like perfect lost motion now. Does that make sense?

    • @qwaqwa1960
      @qwaqwa1960 Месяц назад

      @@mrbreezeet1 Yup, that's SOP as the rest rail compresses. Reblitz even mentions the option of shimming up the rear of the keyframe for global lost motion reduction, tho his concern IIRC is so the capstans don't have to be unscrewed too far.

    • @TheArtisanSchool
      @TheArtisanSchool Месяц назад

      Yeah, I see that in the field all the time. The original false for the hammer compress so much and sometimes all you do is just put a little bit there and you have just the right amount of after touch without having to change any of the motion. When that happens, it feels like angels sings :-)

    From a business perspective, I think tuner should know a few things about the piano they are to tune, including the last time it was tuned among other things. This would let you know if its just a regular tuning you are up for or with a pitch correction. Also, you would be able to value your time and convert that to a fee which you would have discussed ahead. Getting to a piano before knowing that you are going to spend more time than expectedly plan would be self defeating and you might not be able to take the client up on that. I also understand that, it all depends on your approach .

    Shigeru Kawai is not "High End? Really?

      Sorry I should have probably explained more.. When I think of pianos I think of 4 primary categories. At the high end there are pianos such as Fazioli, Bechstein, Bosendorfer - very high quality and low production. The next level down would be more of the Steinway, Mason and Hamlin, Schimmel, Estonia etc.. Then there are the Kawai and Yamahas, and then the final level of new pianos would be your pearl river and young Chang brand pianos. So yes for me the Shigeru Kawai is much higher end than the young chang, samick, pearl river etc.. but for me they aren’t at the level of the top tier pianos - again this is for me and my prospective so take it for what its worth=)

    Thank you for this excellent video. Just a question about angel shot voicing: I couldn't tell from the video if, when you're inserting the needles, you are going in jut before the strike point on the "close" side of the hammer, or if you're inserting them on the far side of the strike point. Thanks again!

      I’m sorry I didn’t see this before. You go to the end of the strike point area and go towards the tail of the piano. The strike point is roughly a quarter inch then you’re gonna be on the tail side end of that quarter inch directing the needles down and towards the tail. Hopefully that makes sense. Cheers!
