The Del Fuegos at the Buckhead Roxy ~ May 20, 1987 (audio only)
The Del Fuegos were one of Boston's best bands in the 1980s. After a fantastic debut LP "The Longest Day" and rocking follow-up "Boston, MA", they released their third LP "Stand Up" in 1987. I saw them a bunch of times (including once with the great Tom Petty!) but this time was special because I got to open the show, playing drums with Arms Akimbo. It was my first time playing at the Roxy - one of my favorite venues in Atlanta, GA - and we got a shout-out from Dan Zanes at the end of their set!

in Atlanta, GA! I have been a fan of Marshall Crenshaw since the first time I saw him in concert in the spring of 1981 (before his first album was released!) UMass Amherst had a legendary annual spring concert which featured the Grateful Dead, Patti Smith and Roy Ayers in 1979, then the Allman Brothers Bnad and Bonnie Raitt in 1980. Paul Cornwall's venue, the Metroplex was an Atlanta institution in the 1980s. The original location was on Luckie St. and it featured mostly hardcore punk shows; after moving to a larger space on Marietta St., the club started diversifying into other types of music. On this night in early 1988, the drunk and noisy crowd was treated to a fantastic show by the legendary Hot Tuna! This one goes ou...

Uncle Green was one of Atlanta's most popular bands in the mid-late 1980s. They were good friends with Mr. Crowe's Garden and the two bands played on bills together, and got together for bowling nights as well. As a result, our names were constantly confused and people would ask me 'When is Uncle Crowe's Garden playing again?' or 'How are things going with Mr. Green Crowe?" I also remember that...

The wholesome and charismatic Rick Taylor played guitar and sang lead vocals; James St. James and Bruce Thelkeld were the rock solid bassist and drummer, and Jonny D added impeccably tasteful lead guitar. When Drivin' n Cryin' debuted at a party at the Blue Rat Gallery, everyone was wowed by their fresh new sound. It was definitely punk (in my opinion), but there was a psychedelic influence as well. The track at 45:10 was never on a record that I know of. I write it down as There You Are. Always loved that one. I have some good versions but no soundboard. Shame about the tape runout. It's an inexact science. i did see them play under Skullbuckle but it wasn't here. I think it was the Echo Lounge, a nice place that was much too short-lived.

      I have three uploads in a row that are almost exactly the same length - 1:29:00 and change. Everyone used C-90s as the C-100s were pricey and the C-120s were unreliable. So the few minutes we lost there would have probably been lost at the very end. Thanks for the info about the mystery song!

I barely knew what I was doing, never got a good white balance and just about melted in the heat but what a great first concert to shoot! I found some footage on line from June 1996 - shaky camera, snap zooms, out of focus and bad white balance... seems about right. I always respected their approach to the music business - it's a great big pie and our little slice is more than sufficient.

    • @Ted_Selke
      @Ted_Selke 6 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Yes, I could make a high bitrate copy. I actually corrected the speed on the first track as the tape runs much too fast - I lowered the speed until the guitar was in tune. I boosted the mids and adjusted the volume levels to make them more consistent. On the tape, some tracks are very loud and others are very quiet. Then I ran my DAW noise reduction to bring down the background noise level as it was very loud. I didn't do an individual mastering on each track, so there is probably room for improvement if someone wants to take the time to do that.

    Love this. Cool tape. Saw them at the Hi-Pointe in St. Louis a 2nd floor sliver of a bar in a brick building. Thought it was coming down that night. They were so freaking loud!!! Love their fast rockers but great to hear this early recording of Endeavor - Nice song.

    By Big Al's appearance, the photo actually looks like it's from one of the (35th or 38th) reunion shows at the Calvin ... or, ca. 2004/2007?

      Yes, I think you're right! I missed those shows unfortunately, though I went to the Wild Weekend a few years before that. I couldn't find a 1993 photo and I didn't want to use a 70s/80s photo so I picked this one to illustrate who was in the band. I forgot about the reunion shows - good eye!

      @@gregfeeney1375 I lived in Northampton for eight years but I got there too late to catch the shows. I did see them with Big Al many times though! And I got to see and meet the Shaggs at their reunion show in North Adams, MA!

    wow, fantastic! I saw them the previous July (my first time; had been a fan of the records since '77) in upstate NY at a festival. They opened with 'Rocket #9", Al looked kind of miffed the whole time, Joey was smiling as always, Terry was in wacky fine form, and Tommy's vocal spotlight was "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)"

      That's cool that you got to see them with Big Al, and Tommy's vocal spotlight was always a highlight!

      Usually the more miffed Al looked the better the show was. I actually talked to him about it once and he said. "you noticed that "
